2003 GMC Yukon. Consumer writes in regards to intermittent anti-lock braking system. The consumer stated while driving down the road, warning bells started to sound and the check brake system light, illuminated. The consumer checked the brake fluid, and found it was ok. The next day, he took the vehicle to the repair shop, where they replaced the pads and checked the system. They ran a diagnostic check, which verified the ABS had come on, but reset when the engine was re-stared. The brake shop recommended the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer. However, in their opinion the ABS module and ABS pump needed to be replaced. They explained to the consumer, when the warning light was on, the ABS was inoperative. The dealer informed the consumer, it would cost $125, just to run the diagnostic and if the module and pump needed to be replaced, it would cost $ 2,200. The ABS light stayed out for weeks. However, in March 2014, the light illuminated again.

While traveling on I-75 North at the I-4 exit I brake to slow down for stopped traffic ahead and the brake pedal worked for a brief moment before quickly loosing all pressure and going to the floor. All braking power was lost immediately and I barely avoided an accident by swerving off the road to avoid the stopped traffic in my lane. Upon initial inspection it became obvious that the brake line had ruptured behind the front driver side wheel. The lines are all heavily corroded and rusted, thereby becoming brittle and failing under pressure.

As a was approaching an intersection I applied my brakes only to feel them drop to the floor. After pulling off to the side of the road and inspecting my engine compartment I found that there was brake fluid all over. I managed to limp the vehicle to a repair facility which notified me that my brake lines all were rust and badly needed to be replaced. There were numerous attempts at braking, but the vehicle continued to accelerate. In order to come to a complete stop the gear selector was shifted into neutral. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for inspection. The mechanic stated that the brake lines were completely rusted. The vehicle was then towed to an authorized dealer for a second opinion. The vehicle exceeded the service warranty mileage and had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact planned to have the vehicle repaired at some point. The approximate failure mileage was 112,000.

After driving for about 100 miles, stopped for lunch. After stopping for lunch, drove 2003 GMC Yukon with only 54,000 miles on it for another 20 miles on country highway at 55mph. Stepped on brakes to slow-down for slower traffic, the pedal went to the floor and the brake light came on. The Yukon was able to slow down before hitting the slower traffic. Drove about another 50 miles to nearest Chevrolet/GMC dealer, needing to use full brake pedal travel to slow-down the vehicle. The service brake light came on everytime the brakes were applied. The dealership investigated the failure. The rear brake line had rusted through and burst. The fuel tank needed to be removed to replace rear brake lines on the truck. The truck had to be left overnight at a dealership 100 miles from final destination to have the lines replaced. The dealership was very helpful in completing the repairs. Estimated cost from the dealer for the repairs was $400 - $800. The brake line failed with no warning.

I have a 2003 GMC Yukon and the electronic brake control module (ecbm) has failed. The ecbm is the feature that controls the anti-lock brake system (ABS) on cars and trucks. Without the ecbm working, a car/truck will not have ABS braking, which is a safety hazard for stopping and braking, especially since all new cars have this feature and most people do not know how to drive otherwise. I did some internet research and this appears to be a very common problem with GMC and all General Motors trucks from 2000 to 2003 and other model years. There are thousands of people out there who have had this ebcm fail on them. I took my truck to the dealership and they informed me that there are no recalls for this part and further that the replacement part is $1,000, excluding labor. This exorbitant charge is cost prohibitive to most people and is dangerous because it is a critical safety feature. I feel like this part should be recalled at no cost to consumers. This is a critical safety issue and it seems like it is a common problem, which makes me believe it is a factory defect.

The contact owns a 2003 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that the brakes failed while approaching a stop sign. After 20 feet, the vehicle stopped. She pulled over to the shoulder, and waited approximately ten minutes. The dealer performed a diagnostic, but no failure could be identified. This was the second occurrence of this failure. On the first occasion, midas checked the brakes, but also could not identify a failure. There is a recall related to the failure she is experiencing. The failure mileage was 59,000 and current mileage was 59,100. Updated 07/29/08. The right front window would not roll down at times. The dealer replaced the regulator and the motor. Hydraulic brake system. Vehicle was sitting in driveway without use for a few weeks. When used brakes were very spongy, long pedal travel before reaction then extended stopping distance. Fluid level ok, clear appeared normal, no apparent leaks, normal temperature. Drove to dealer carefully, service manager when moving vehicle said he almost ran through the back otf the building. Vehicle not in any accidents, service maintenance conducted at normal intervals according to service recommendations. Approximately 27000 miles on vehicle. Driven by myself 50 years old and my wife 47 years old safe drivers speed limit speeds large amount of stopping distance for braking not jamming on brakes at last minute. I scheduled vehicle for service at win kelly Chevrolet where purchased for brake check and 30,000 mile checkup. While there they advised it was interior failure of master cylinder and they replaced it under warranty. The brakes feel a little better but the pedal still moves approximately 4" before applying any pressure. I feel this is still a problem and will be taking it back to the dealer again. I believe they have a problem with the system like they had on previous S10 models in late 90's with the slow speed braking recall. Just want to send a complaint for you to be aware of in case you receive more complaints. I emailed a letter to GM while it was in the shop with the same comments and the reference to the previous for the smaller versions in the late 90's and have yet to receive a response. If this is the same problem then they may have a valve design, operation or part assemble/install defect with the system.
