My car did basically the same thing... It would sputter at low RPMs and even sometimes when as low as 500 then shutoff. It turns out it was the "Fast Idle Control Valve" situated in front of the intake. This little valve gets dirty and worn; not allowing the car to idle smoothly.
Solution: Well you can remove it and thoroughly clean it but I have heard that dosent last very long.
The best way to go, is to Just buy it new. Downside is it will cost you a bit over $200 but that should solve the problem.
