I am the original owner of this 1996 Honda Accord with 210k miles.The car runs great, but this car was being serviced for my teen daughters to use. Secondary to the SRS light being on, we wanted to get it addressed before allowing the kids to drive it. I took the car to the Music City Honda (Madison, TN) dealership. Was told that SRS control system needed to be replaced at a cost of $1500, in addition to other service being done for a total of $2150. We proceeded with the work and upon completion the SRS light remained on. Additional investigation was done and now I am being told that the wiring harness between the control system and the actual airbags is not working properly. I was told that IF the part is still available (won't know until next week), it would cost approximately $2200 more for parts and labor (10 hrs). I was cautioned that if during the 10 hours of labor removing the dash and getting to the harness, a bracket or any ancillary part was to inadvertently damaged, it is likely that getting a replacement part would likely not be possible, due to the age of the car. I was also told that even if the work is done there would not be a guarantee that the SRS issue would be fully resolved.
So in essence, I have a perfectly running car that I have already paid $1500 to replace the SRS control system for, yet the airbags do not work. For an additional $2200, the wiring harness can be replaced and this still may not resolve the issue. In addition, if some ancillary part is damaged during the process of this "repair" the dash/car could not be put back together properly.
I can't continue putting good money out for a potential "repair" that cannot be guaranteed. Furthermore, I cannot risk safety of my family or the safety of someone else driving this car without the main safety feature being functional.
It seems that this is not an isolated issue. Was there a recall from Honda regarding the SRS system? Through this forum, is it possible to request a refund from Honda for the work that has already been done, but not resulting in resolution?

My 17 year old daughter just bought this car all with her hard earned money. After paying for hood repair & seat belt replacement ($684.00), was informed that the SRS sensor would cost $881.00 plus tax to fix. If not repaired, the air bags would not deploy. I am so worried that I will lose my daughter in an accident but do not have the money to fix this problem. I will not let her drive on interstate until the problem is solved. I cannot believe that Honda does not cover air bags for the life of the vehicle - that they care so little for human life or at least be concerned about wrongful death lawsuits.

This is the second time my srs light has come. It came on 2 years ago and cost me $500.00 to fix
it. Now its on again. I have a list of Hondas that srs lights have become a problem.

SRS Light on for no apparent reason (had done no radio installs etc.). Dealership's (Koon's of VA) diagnostic said the battery was low. I paid the dealership to replace battery and reset SRS. A couple of weeks later the light is back on so back to the dealership I go. Now they say the SRS "control module" is bad and needs replacing --- at ~$700.00. I remind them of their previous diagnosis and they then said they couldn't even be certain it was the control module. I demanded a refund on the previous charge (got labor charges refunded) but decided to cut loses and not have dealership fix. Some info on web showing how to "short" the module to reset it. I tried this but only a temporary fix. Seems the module is bad ... seems a lot of SRS control modules from this period of Hondas go bad.

I was given this car from my brother. He said the SRS light has always been on for him. I took the car to Les Schwab for a free inspection and the mechanic said it means the air bags don't work. I am glad its nothing seriously wrong with the car. I am concerned for my and anyone else in the car with me's safety.
