I have a 1999 Honda Accord LX with a 4 cylinder vtec engine. 1-12-08 while driving at lower speeds--typically 30 to 45 mph the car will jerk and change gears when not needed. At highway speeds the car stalls and I have to shift to neutral to restart. Update: May 2008 and I have no reverse gear at all. After reading all the complaints I would really like to know why Honda has not put a recall on these 1998 and 1999 transmissions. Why" does someone really have to die before they fix their own problem" I am calling Honda in the morning and if I don't get satisfactory results I would like to start a negative campaign against Honda. This is crazy and I want answers.

I have a 1999 Honda Accord LX 4 door sedan with 71,000 miles on it. The check engine light came on, and the dealer says the P0740 code is torque converter clutch assembly failure is a $2900 replace the transmission job. A transmission shop told me the same thing. A transmission with 71,000 miles, even 7 years old, should not go out!!!! there was a Honda transmission class action suit covering only 2000-2003 trannys, my model year is excluded but same problem exists !!!!!

Hi, I own a 1999 4 door automatic Honda Accord ex-ul, but the transmission literally failed on this car and is due to the fact of a defective part, which I found from reading various article on the website. The Honda is not accepting its problem. I have seen serial complaints out transmission failure on the website. Honda have extended warranty by recall on 2000-2001 Honda Accord models, by they haven't done for 1999 models. My personal view is that they are avoid a huge recall by hiding the problem. I would request you to investigate the matter as it may cause lots of accidents due to transmission failure in the of the freeway. Since Honda is protecting himself, we would need you help to check on the reality of bad transmission put in 1999 Honda.

Car is stalling and seems that transmission is slipping. In researching web, I have run across at least 20 drivers, with exact same make, model etc. Although my car has 120K miles, some only had 60K when their transmission failed. Every mechanic that I spoke with (including dealership) admits that the transmission in these models are known to fail. I can't believe that a dealer as reputable as Honda has not been made to reengineer their transmissions. According to the complaints I have read, even the 2004 models have transmissions beginning to fail. It seems extremely unfair that the customers are the ones footing the bill.

Since first purchased this 99 Accord has been to the shop on 5 different occasions for hard shifting into 1st and 2nd. Was told by Honda mechanic that was how it was supposed to shift. Still having troubles with slipping, and hard shifting and occasionally down shifting when going 70mph, car will whine loudly and you can feel the transmission down shift. Was told I needed to replace transmission.

I can add another transmission failure from a Honda Accord 1999. This car has the same transmission as the recalled transmissions on Honda Accord from 2000 to 2002. My transmission seal leaked at 110,000 miles. I had the transmission rebuilt at 149,000 miles for $2100. Of course, the reason I bought a Honda was better engineering. I am beginning to think that I have a false perception of the Honda quality. This was my first Honda and I don't think at this time that my next car will be a Honda automatically. I have gotten unsold on them. Based on all of the other letters I saw on this same problem, and the fact these cars had lower mileage, I don't think I have a prayer on Honda kicking in something for the repair. Next time I buy a car I am starting with these letters on cars at this website first!!!! cars are quite expensive to have to settle for problems!

I was driving on the freeway when all of a sudden my car felt as if it were in neutral. The transmission went out on the freeway. The transmission in the Honda Accord vehicle years 1998-2003 are defective. The transmissions are failing at as early as 70,000 miles. My Accord transmission recently failed at an estimated 80,000-85,000 miles. Upon further investigation I discovered that Honda did/or will replace the transmission in only the 2000 and up Accord but will not acknowledge a problem in the 98 and 99 Honda Accord despite knowing that the same exact type of transmission was used in the 98 and 99 versions as well. There are numerous complaints concerning Honda's refusal to take responsibility and replace the transmission in 98 and 99 as well. Is their anything that we can do. I think it's unfair to spend over $2,600 to replace something that Honda knows is defective. Please let me know what actions I could take. Thanks

I was driving back from sf to our home in santa rosa, and I noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. Then the odometer dropped from 65 to 0, went back to 65, then fluctuated. As I took the exit off the freeway, the car was losing power, and jerked when I gave it gas. I pulled over and called the tow truck. The engine did not start when the tow truck driver tried it, although it cranked. The car was towed to marin Honda. They tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. They replaced it but at the same time the D4(trans gear selection)light began to flash. The service advisor said that it's a completely different problem, and that we should take the car back to the mechanic who replaced the trans fluid 7 weeks ago.(my wife told the customer service advisor that we had the trans work done a couple of months ago when it fact it was just changing fluid as part of regular maintenance). Marin Honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. The D4 starts flashing when the engine is started and shift to any one of gears. And it makes a big clunk and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. I called marin Honda cust advisor and told him it must be related to ignition switch replacement, but he's adamant that it has nothing to do with it. When we checked your website and looked under "recall" for 1999 Accord, we found it had ignition sw recalls in three different years, 2002, 2003, and 2005. Ignition switch(2002), cylinder wear, collar, plate latch(2003), interlock function(2005). Could trans range sensor ckt malfunction be caused by heat from the ignition wiring burning out?

My 99' Honda Accord would slip gears and jerk a lot when I would put it in gear or stop at a stop light and then proceed to go again. After a day of driving I took my car to the dealership and the said my automatic transmission had gone out completely and that they see it happen to my make and year of car all of the time. I had to replace the transmission and take a hit of three thousand dollars to get my car functional again. It amazes me that there is still not a recall for this but almost everyone who owns these cars has to replace the transmission.

The transmission slipped between 3rd and 4th gears and transmission fluid was seen on the driveway. The vehicle was inspected by an independent service dealer, then by the service dealer, who determined the transmission needed replacement. The service dealer replaced the transmission and the manufacturer was notified.

A few weeks ago I was driving and my transmission started to shift erratically through 1st,2nd, and 3rd without a change in speed. Later that same day the transmission would not shift into the following gear resulting in the RPM's to increase follow by it jamming it into gear. The car must no be replaced with a used or new transmission and I was quoted $3000+ to get this done. After alot of reading around and investigating this problem I have learned that this is very common and the 00-01 Accord have a recall for the exact same transmission. My car has 155K miles on it but I have all the service records and car has been very well maintained. I just think it is outrageous that there is no way for Honda to split the cost at the least.

Started seeing transmission fluid on lt side under vehicle. Had seal replaced by local trans ship. Two weeks later fluid leaking again. Researched and found recall on 2000 and up for bad bearing causing this exact problem and Honda's extended warranty on those vehicles. Took vehicle to rt.23 Honda and they advised that even though this was the same problem the only item that the Honda field service manager would only allow the part only. I would have to pay the $1000 labor. I requested the field manager's name but brad morder (service writer at rt.23 Honda) refused to give it to me. I lodged a complaint with Honda (case #12006-04-250-0809)that was handled by chris martinez of Honda (X-118183) who stated that he did not want to discuss the particulars and that he had no authority to change the decision of the field manager. Again, when I asked for the name of the field manager Mr. Martinez would not give it to me. When I asked him for his superior's name so that I could escalate this matter, he advised that his decision was final and there was no other recourse I could take. 1. transmission fluid started leaking on 99 Accord ex with >92100 miles. Eskridge Honda tightened boxton bolt. Leaking got worst. Took car back 2 days later. Eskridge stated a new transmission would be required because the inspection revealed that it was the same transmission problems experienced by other models -- 00-0 models where Honda usa provided an extended warranty to replace those transmissions. 2. from my research, other consumers have been experiencing similar transmission problems on their 99 Honda, but there's been no recalls. 3. since I view it as a safety issue, I plan to pay if necessary to replace it, since I don't want my 16-yr son driving an unsafe vehicle. 4. is nhsta aware of this problem on the 99 Honda? if so, what's the status of your actions in getting Honda usa to extend the warranty for 99 Honda.

1999 Honda Accord ex V6 automatic transmission issue. Vehicle purchased Sept 2000 with approx 15K miles. Vehicle began having problems with the transmission not engaging after throttle had been pressed at approx 42K miles. Bad hesitation, and on an almost daily basis. Press on the gas, the engine revs, but vehicle barely moves and when it does engage it is very harsh. Dangerous trying to enter freeways, pass other vehicles or cross streets/intersections. The basic Honda warranty of only 3/yr 36K miles had already lapsed. Transmission fluid had been changed in Aug 2002 with 31K miles. Again changed(drain/fill) in June 2004 with 46K miles and again in Sept 2006 with 61K miles. Honda transmission fluid used.
