Accord LX 2.3L I4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 185,000 miles

The car would intermittently start and quickly stall only to be unable to start again. There was no telling when this would happen or how long it would be until the car would be ready to go again. Called a Honda dealership and the technician admitted that the main relays were known to be faulty in these cars. He offered a replacement part for $80 and it was something that could be replaced in your driveway.

The main relay is responsible for telling the fuel pump to prime the engine before starting. With the main relay not functioning properly, the engine would start, burn off the fuel, and stall. It would take some time before coming back to the car and trying to start it again. I would occasionally have to keep my foot gently on the gas pedal after starting to ensure that it wouldn't stall and leave me stranded.
