Accord EX

  • Automatic transmission

I'm shocked at the estimated repair bill from the dealer, dismayed that the transmission went bad with such low mileage. I'm just now reading about Honda's bad transmission record and recalls. I'll be examining my next move and repair carefully.

The transmission of my 2000 Honda Accord now shakes when shifting, the car has a lot of trouble going up hills, and the D4 indicator flashes on cold mornings.

Accord EX-L 2.3L Vtec4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 90,692 miles

The transmission started to act up 5-6 months prior to my getting the transmission rebuilt. At first, rough jerky response during lower gear shift when car was first driven in the morning. The first time it happened was when it was raining and then eventually, every morning. Once the car warmed up, the problem went away. Eventually it happened all the time and became difficult to drive comfortably. Gas peddle would resist when pressed. Finally, the engine light came on. The Honda dealer said it needed a new transmission and quoted me $3300.

Several months prior to this I had complained to the Honda dealer about the jerky shifting. They test drove it in the morning (I left it with them overnight so they could drive it first thing since at that time the problem went away once the car was driven for while) and they checked it out and said there was no problem they could detect because the computer gave no code when they hooked it up. Based on this, I had the service they were recommending at the time - major service and timing belt replacement - total cost just under $1000. They told me nothing about there having been known transmission issues with 2000/2001 Honda Accords. Only when I brought the car back when the engine light came on could they determine there was a problem. I found out about the know issue with the transmission when I shopped around to find a better price to replace the it ($3070).

I contacted Honda USA. They feel no responsibility. They told me they don't think its unreasonable for me to spend that kind of money on a 12 year old car even though the transmission had known problems - the extended warranty (7 years or 100,000 miles) was past. They repeated this to me over and over. My car having only 90,000 miles doesn't matter. According to them, time not just miles wears a transmission out.

I have been a Honda owner for 28 years (16 years with a Honda Prelude and now the Accord). After this, I don't plan on buying another Honda when the time comes.

I took my car to the dealership during the recall period and not once did they mention the recall. They did always have several things that they wanted to fix on my car for a hefty price! Now I am left with transmission that is broken and past the special recall period.

Accord LX 2.3L 4 cyl F23a

  • Automatic transmission
  • 95,000 miles

When going from a slower speed, the car revs and doesn't shift up for a few seconds, then shifts up with a horrible clunk, and jerks the entire car really badly. The same thing usually happens with the next shift, except for the times when it doesn't shift at all and I have to pull over.

Accord EX 3.0L V6

Just like everybody else, transmission was really jerky from 1st to 2nd gear, and fairly jerky from 2nd to 3rd. It would also slip a bit. I got it replaced under extended warranty at 95,000 miles, and the new transmission is also pretty jerky; yet, I'm at 133,000 miles so at least it works.

I have owned a 78' accord 3 door, an 85' accord 3 door, a 95' civic ex coupe, a 98' cr-v, a 93' prelude vtec, and now this 2000 accord coupe v6. Based on the number of people that have problems with the transmissions in these v6 accords and mine, I will never buy another Honda product. This includes lawnmowers, (which I also own) motorcycles, and marine engines. I have owned Honda products because of the reliability, but they wont stand behind there product, i.e. transmission problems when they know they have a major problem. They are aware of it and have done nothing. They have seen a lot of my money over many years and they will not see another dime. I have two kids and I will encourage them to stay away from these products through there lives. If anyone out there decides to have there transmission replaced in a 98-02 accord v6, dont buy the parts or have it done at Honda. The parts Honda sells for the internals in these transmissions is the same crap they were sold with originally and it will100% fail again. Again reiterating, they have done nothing to fx this problem

This issue concerns me as I am sure more damage will happen to the transmission. I brought the car to Proctor Honda of Tallahassee and they told me it was a bad solenoid in the torque converter. I paid over $300 to have the solenoid replaced and it is still sh*ting hard.

Accord SE 4 cyl. V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 88,000 miles

The warranty extension to cover transmission issues was 7 years 9 months or 109,000 miles, which ever came first. My car is a 2000 Honda Accord SE with 88,000 miles on it. Last month the transmission started making a loud clunking sound between 1st and 2nd gear and when put in reverse. It does not do it all the time, but is progressively getting worse. I called American Honda to ask if they could repair this problem even though I am over the time limit and under the mileage limit. They will get back to me. I took it to a Honda dealer to verify that the problem is with the transmission and it is and that trip cost me $87.00. First the engine and now the transmission! What's next!

(reported on)

Accord LX 2.3

  • Automatic transmission
  • 77,000 miles

Transmission was flushed at 30,000 and 60,000 miles using Honda transmission fluid. Started clunking between gears (mostly first and second) and when going into reverse at about 40,000. Florida dealer (where the car was purchased) could never hear it. Moved to Alabama and the Honda dealer had no problem hearing the clunks between several of the gears. They replaced the transmission with a rebuilt Honda transmission (it took 17 days, but they gave me a loaner). Unfortunately, my "new" transmission had five gears and the old one had only four. Honda dealer assured me this was the same as my old transmission and I probably didn't notice it. The "rebuilt" transmission also clunks, but worse yet it has made overdrive useless. With the old transmission, the car ran 2800 rps at 70 mph and 2400 rpm at 60 mph. With the new transmission, the car runs 2500 rpm at 70 mph and 2200 rpm at 60 mph. This has made cruise useless as the car continually shifts with cruise on at the slightest pull. The car comes out of 5th gear to 3rd gear and now goes 4000 rpm at 70 mph and 3800 rpm at 60 mph when it comes out of cruise. On a trip between Birmingham and Decatur the car would normally downshift one time (went from 2800 rpm to 3100 rpm). On the same trip with the replacement transmission the car constantly downshifts at just about every hill and goes to 4000 rpm at 70 mph. I took it to the Honda dealer who cannot duplicate the clunking and during the in-town driving it did not come out of cruise control (imagine that!). I bought this car based on the Honda reputation and this has been the only problem I've had. I had planned to drive the car for many years and have taken very good care of, but believe it is time to move on from Honda.
