My car has less than 84,000 miles and they say my transmission is "going out" and needs replacing. They quote $2,700 for a Honda rebuilt model with 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. The local Honda repair people say this is highly unusual but it does happen. But in a car less with than 84,000 miles? I will call the Honda Corp customer service on April 20, 2009 to see if they can give me some relief. This is now very tight on me since I had to take a salary reduction of 30% and the cost is way too much.
Monday (4/20/09) I called Honda Customer Service and shared my transmission problem as described above. They passed my case on to a case manager for investigation. The case manager called me today (4/21/09) and said that since I had my car regularly maintained through Honda and have been a good Honda customer that they would only charge me $1155 and not the $2700. They called my Honda repair department and made that official. I just got off the phone with the Honda Repair people who had talked to the case manager and my repair is set for early next week. This calling Honda directly is a 53% savings in transmission repair costs. I'm very pleased with this outcome. I plan on keeping my car for another 100K if possible.

OK, this is for all you Honda die-hards...believe me I WAS one.
I have owned: 1.) 83' Honda CRX (5-speed) Si (sold with 230,000) 2.) 86' Honda Accord (5-speed) (sold with 320,000) 3.) 89' Honda Prelude Si (5-speed) (sold with 150,000) 4.) 00'Accord EX V6 coupe (automatic..bought by wife) (Should have sold at 45,000)
So it's only a list of 4 but then again look at the mileage...for god sakes I am only 30. Seriously I just don't want you all to think I am a Honda hating asshole. While loving the first three Honda's, I absolutely HATE the 2000 Accord. Absolute piece of junk. We have taken it in to the dealer for service since we bought it, except for easy stuff like oil changes and brakes. We owned it since 36k and at 45k the transmission started shifting tough and over the last 3 years we took it in about 5 times to different dealers to complain, and all said nothing could be done until the D-4 light flashed. On the 4th inspection at 74k, they recommended new wheel bearings, ball joints, tie rods, sway bars and a lot more. Really that much stuff being replaced at that low mileage was scary. After the 4th trip, we swore we would not waste anymore money taking it in until the D-4 light started flashing at 105K. We called the dealer and took it in. They informed us that the extended warranty granted after the class-action lawsuit was up, and at 100k we had to call Honda and file a complaint.
Well after three weeks of fighting and waiting, we were informed that because the warranty period was up that we would have to pay 70% of $3,600. This means they would only cover 30%...that is crap! I can do it myself for $500. Not to mention that we had it in with complaints and showed them all the receipts. I have read several posts that said that even the rebuilt transmissions are junk. I am switching it to a 5-Speed. If anyone wants info I will post pictures of the steps needed. I am never buying another Honda but would like to help any of you who don't have time or money to put 2 or 3 transmissions in these things.

I thought I had never had a decent car until I bought my grandmother's Honda Accord from her. I was excited to have a newer car and a Honda to boot! I always heard great things about Hondas. So the transmission is acting up and my mechanic tells me that its all right. A year goes by and my transmission slowly gets worse. I take it to the mechanic and he tells me that I need a new tranny. I can get a $2100 used tranny with no warranty, a $1700 rebuild with a warranty, or a $3000 new one. I call the Honda customer service regarding the warranty and they tell me I need to have a Honda dealership look at the car and diagnose the already diagnosed problem (for $109.00). When I do that, they may help me with the cost but probably not. Oh yeah, the Honda dealership tells me that no one can rebuild a Honda transmission, it is not possible. So someone is trying to screw me! So tomorrow I am calling Honda to let them know that their reputation is crap! How can they screw up in the manufacturing and not pay for it? I have three kids and cannot afford to fix Honda's mistake.

If I wanted to replace a tranny at 114k miles, I woulda bought a Chevy! As of this writing, I do not know the outcome with Honda. Dealer recommends a rebuilt tranny for $3500.
This makes me furious! It happened too late to be included in the lawsuit settlement.

I see a lot of unhappy people here about Honda and bad transmissions. I think it only fair that I relate a problem with the transmission on my 2000 Honda (78000 miles). In Oct of 2005 my transmission started leaking fluid (very messy on my garage floor). I took it to my local mechanic and he replaced the seals. It started leaking a few days latter. I took it back to my mechanic and he told me he just found out that Honda was having problems with transmissions on their cars. I contacted my Honda dealer (Autowest Honda of Roseville, Ca.). They told me to bring my car in. They replaced the transmission (no cost to me) and refunded me what I had paid my mechanic for the seal replacement. They even provided me with a rental car while mine was in their shop. This my 3rd Honda and I have nothing but praise for the cars and my dealer.

I bought a used 2000 Honda accord 180,000 km for my daughter for 4,800 I was told the transmission was replaced under warranty and that it had four new brake lines replaced. everything seemed fine but is she going to have trans. problems down the road? maybe I should have did more research on this year of accord. And I find that the car can take off on you I find myself braking needlessly when the car should be down gearing as I let off the gas. I drive an acura el with computer controlled 4 speed automatic,When I let off the gas ,the car responds and the brakes dont have to be applied as hard.My daughter has a heavy foot so I hope the car lives up to it name rick

This is my first Honda; It is reliable and is used for short distance commute. I kept it serviced in the dealer following the guide book.
It has an SRS light problem at 35K. It has a bad alternator problem at 50k The mechanic adviser can tell the exact problem just when I describe the problem. Amazing! I am happy the most with their dealer's service.
I bought Honda because I already have BMW and Chrysler. Now I want to try the popular Honda. And later we bought 06 Odyssey for kids. If I could compare the success of an automaker with marathon (I run 52 a year) - Honda might not win at the start line(when the car is engineered & shipped), but it wins at the finish line because the service team.
The dealer mechanic adviser is going to ask Honda if I can get some help from the parts. He says the failure is not a driver error. Any car shouldn't die at 70000 in normal driving circumstance.
As an engineer myself and launched lots of programs on Satellite. I am forgiving for the car manufacturer. I made a few mistakes, but sure I do my best to recover it. Larry Hopkins Honda did her best to save Honda.

I went to get my inspection sticker and my check engine light was on and when they ran the diagnostics the code said transmission slipping in 3rd gear............I haven't taken it in yet but I am going to have to do something........I really don't feel the slipping very much but I want to know if other Honda owners are experiencing the same problem.

I hate Honda's I will never buy a Honda again. In my opinion they are the worst, they know about our car's problems, but are still manufacturing the transmissions that the problems happen in. If they made a mistake they should learn what it is and replace it with the updated version. My Transmission died in Sep 07 and only cost 250.00 because of the extended warranty, which is fine. But know I am having the same problem only 4000 miles and 7 months later, come on Honda. I am surprised a class action lawsuit hasn't been filed because this problem has almost caused an accident for me by jolting forward when I came to a slow stop behind someone or approaching an intersection. If Honda made a mistake they should pay for it, NOT THE CONSUMER!

6 months after i bought my accord the transmission started slipping, drove it like that for about a year and half till it got really bad, i just replaced it. did it on my own so i only bought the transmission but after 2 days it went back to the same problem. someone once told me Honda had a problem with the clutch relay and there was an actual recall for that problem. when i contacted the dealer because my car was over 100k miles they wouldn't fix it. now that i want to get the part info to buy it, i cant find it. Honda has disappointed me a lot. Maybe it should be call early Hyundai.

Since used auto purchase after 6 months dealer replaced transmission with a rebuilt. The rebuilt lasted 6 months. Dealer replaced transmission again with another rebuilt. The second rebuilt only lasted 2 weeks.

I will never buy a Honda again. Both my wifes 2000 Odyssey and now my 2000 Accord have had transmission problems. My wifes was fixed free at 90,000 miles (after several years of telling the dealer that the transmission should not clunk while you are going in reverse- but they said they could not feel it). Mine slips severely between 1st and 2nd gear- which again for the last six months I have complained about but they denied there was a problem. Finally with my car at 120,000 miles they say my transmission is shot and could fail at any time. Of course it is not covered by any warranty- the guy at the Honda repair shop even denied that he ever heard of there being problems with the Accord transmission. I had two Mazda's before this- one with 145,000 miles one with 165,000 miles and neither had any transmission problems (or any other problems for that matter). I thought I was going to get an even better car with Honda. Boy was I wrong.

Well let me start off by saying that first of all this is and probably will only be my first Honda ever. I got the car with 45k on it. Drove about 25k and now I am getting a problem. I drive normal reaching about 40 miles an hour, then when I hit the brakes it just jerks really hard and slips from 1st to 2nd. So I come to a complete stop now my D (drive) light is blinking, so when I start to slowly accelerate it starts from 2nd gear not first. I have to turn off the engine and turn it back on for it to be normal for maybe a mile or so. Then do the same thing all over again. I F*!@*n HATE MY CAR.

I bought my accord certified then came to know about the warranty extension. It takes longer to shift in between 1-2 and 2-3 not only in the morning but also whenever I start driving after about 2-3 hrs of parking. Problem is more obvious when the outside is hot. It gets alright gradually as I drive and after 15-20 minutes shifts really smooth. I bought it on 2005 Feb with 28K miles on it. Drove 45K miles since then in two years, never failed. Had two minor problems (not the tranny) but got it cleaned/fixed by the dealership under warranty. Never disappointed me. I love it's performance and features except I am always scared about the tranny.
Dont have a clue why it happens only in the morning and early phase of driving. Showed my Honda dealer, but it was shifting smoother when I took it to them. Got more smooth when they were test driving so they could not "duplicate". They said that early in the morning the engine runs with higher rpm to heat up the engine and thus shifts harder. Also because it is a V6 thus the shifting is different!! God knows!!
But hey guys.. Honda has settled down a case against them and has extended the warranty upto 109K miles or 7yrs9months whichever comes first... and thus I will be relieved until the Feb 2008.
I just talked to Honda over the phone and got the service bulletin no. 02-062. Tell it to your Honda dealer they will be able to pull out the info. Best wishes for your cars.

Transmission won't shift from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd. It takes longer to do that by a few seconds, causing jerky shifting. But it only happens the first few minutes in the morning!! The rest of the day it's fine!
Why in the world would that only happen in the morning ... I don't go to Honda dealers all these years to save money, so they may refuse to replace the transmission anyway. the shop i go to had replaced the transmission fluid, it looked clean to begin with but still the problem is there. also added transmission fluid additive but didn't help.

I had my transmission fixed and the cost was 2500.00. Thinking everything was great, we took the car on our holiday to California. We drove about 5 hours and the engine light went on. We had to drive backwards 1.5 hours to the transmission place and had to leave the car for 5 days. We picked it up on the way home and had to put it in the shop for another week. After 6 months and driving over the 12,000 miles warranty, it started slipping again. My check engine light has been on again and will not go off. I hate to have to pay again to get this fixed.

I have taken my car into the honda dealer three times for the transmission. every time i take it they tell me there is not a problem. now i have 100,000k miles and the car jumps, slips between 1st and 2nd. its bad. Now it wont be covered under warranty. All the lights on my dashboard come on. the engine light is on and wont go off. People keep trying to tell me its an electrical problem. It's not. The transmission is jacked in this car. It just started getting really bad at 100k.
- laceyk, Fort Worth, TX, US
My 2000 accord has been running without any problems for the past six years. for the past 3 weeks there seems to be a transmission problem. the check engine light is on permanently on. It does not shift from 1-2 gear smoothly. It goes into high rpm (5000) and then jumps to second. the car obviously jerks badly when this happens.
called the Honda dealership and they have to hook it up to diagnose the problem.. according to them it "could be any type of problem" however since my car has 94000 miles, they said it would be covered under the warranty .. taking the car on nov 9 '06
will keep the outcome of the repair work posted in this site.
