Date of the actual fix is just a guess but the mileage was in the area of 14100 miles. They had to replace my brakes & rotors as they were completely destroyed. The dealer "Good Willed" the repair as it was so close to 14000 miles. I was advised by the dealer that the cause was the lack of use, rust builds up and the problem occurs. I should also mention that 75% of my driving is on the highway, not stop & go. Although the dealer replaced the brakes & rotors with OEM I would never purchase OEM brakes or rotors for the Accord.

It is also interesting that approximately 1 year later I received a notice that there was a class action lawsuit concerning the rear brakes and there was a settlement although the settlement does not take the issue far enough it shows they know there is a problem.

My rear brake pads wore out at 21,000 miles. Honda said they was a problem with premature wear but I would have to pay to replace them. I was told they were replaced with better longer lasting pads. It turns out they replaced the pads with the same pads that were in the car originally. I would never had paid Honda to replace them with the same pads. I would have gone to a reputable brake shop and had them replaced with better pads. I think I was cheated when the service adviser told me he put in better longer lasting pads and did not. When i called the dealer I was told they used the only pads that are available which are the originals. I believe I should be reimbursed. I am waiting to hear what the dealers upper management is going to do. I have a feeling I will be left out to dry.

At 23,711 miles and 10 months of ownership of my brand new 2008 Honda Accord LX-P, I had to replace my rear brakes. I finally got the dealership to help me get Honda to cover the repair under warranty after months of phone calls. I do nearly all highway miles (as you can tell by putting 23,711 miles on in 10 months) and there is no way this is "normal wear and tear" which was Honda's initial excuse for not covering the repair. I got lucky that they reimbursed me. I have recently heard from the dealership that the part number for the pads changed and the service manager thinks Honda fixed the problem. He said they probably used softer pads to reduce noise, and the unintended consequence was rapid wear. I am now at almost 52,000 miles after 24 months of ownership, and the rear brakes are squeeling again. I see this being a continued problem going forward.

Told that needed rear brake pads replaced due to grinding sound. Front pads still had 70% life left. Never had rear pads wear out before front ones. Usually changed front pads twice before rear ones. Have owned GM, Ford, and Chrysler cars in the past. Was insulted by Honda with their offer to change pads, have me pay for the work and then if the class action suit is approved will reimburse me a max of 150 dollars which does not cover the total cost of repair.

Solved the problem. Purchased ceramic pads from Auto Zone with lifetime guarantee for 60 dollars. Replaced the pads myself. Took 35 minutes from start to finish. Who knows when people will get their money from Honda

premature brake wear premature brake wear premature brake wear

Just as the stories have unfolded here's my twist. Unfortunately this car was replacing a 2000 Honda Passport. The most expensive car I have ever owned due to repairs.

My wife made an appt. with our local dealership. They said they would check out the rear brake noise that was coming from the back at under 26,000. He failed to tell her there was a class action lawsuit regarding this particular matter or that there were so many other complaints. Instead he claimed that she didn't bring the car in @ 15,000 miles to have here rear brakes lubed. therefore they were not covered and she would be responsible for the brake repair. I told her to bring the car home and assured here that it was safe enough to drive due to the terrible screeching from the metal to metal contact. I then took over at that point to talk to the very friendly Honda Care Care rep. she assured me this was a common problem and would assign me a case manager. That's where it went downhill from there. After a game of phone tag we finally engaged in our first and last conversation. He had a very robotic rehearsed demeanor. He claimed the dealership had told him that I needed a whole new brake job and all the brakes needed attention. He offered to pay 1/2 of the back brake repair. I wasn't happy with this response and asked for a fix for the problem. He stated that Honda had fixed the problem but couldn't tell me what the fix was because it was confidential information. I then asked for a manager or bosses name to contact and he claimed that he was it and I could take this no farther. I have had several cars that the back brakes lasted the life of the car so I wasn't happy with the 1/2 he was offering of someone else's problem. I bought the ceramic pads and new rotors for the back. I also bought new pads for the front. Low and behold the front brakes looked brand new. They didn't need to be replaced and looked as if they had a year or more left on the life of them. so after my first car being a Honda and several more to follow......I say Goodbye Honda family!!!! After this one I'm done. I can't accept that a company that has a problem, not only refuses to fix it but tries to hide it as well. I only spent 130.00 on my own repair with new parts as opposed to the 197. for turning the rotors that the honda rep had offered to a dealer I had just complained about. My advice to you all is educate yourselves before you trust in your local dealership or Honda rep. Thank You to this website that started the adventure.

I started hearing this screeching sound coming from my car. I was CONVINCED it was the car in front of me...until he turned and was no where in sight but the noise continued. I called the dealership to have them look at it. They called my cell to tell me the rear brakes were shot, the pads needed to be replaced and the rotors needed to be machined. Uh HELLO, my car only has 19,000 miles on it. How could the REAR brakes be shot? That's when the service rep told me it was a common problem but wasn't a recall and wouldn't be covered under warranty. It would cost $249 + tax to repair. This is my fourth Honda Accord, 3 of which I bought brand new. My 1996 is still on the road with over $150,000 miles on it and I have only replaced the rear brakes once. I started researching this problem and found that there is a class action suit but that will only reimburse $125 of the cost to me....maybe. On top of that, the dealership replaced the parts the same crappy defective pads that are a known problem. That means I'll have to go back in another 19,000 miles. I am ripping mad. I cannot believe that Honda promotes the fact that you don't have to have the car serviced as often when they sell you the car and then you have to bring it in every 20,000 miles for brakes. I'd rather change the oil more often. Honda, you need to 'man up' and take some responsibility for the subpar product you are producing. Prior to this I was your biggest fan.....your loss!!

http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/daily-news/100408-Honda-Settles-Lawsuit-over-Accord-Brakes/

The New York Times reports, "Honda has agreed to settle a class-action suit that claims the rear brakes in 750,000 late model Accords and Acura TSXs are wearing out more than twice as fast as they should." According to the plaintiffs, a new braking system that debuted on the 2008 Accord and the 2009 TSX can cause brake pads to wear out after just 15,000 miles, long before the 70,000 miles such pads should last.

To date, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received more than 350 owner complaints about the premature brake wear. You can view the complaints through NHTSA's online database.

Under the terms of the settlement, Autoblog says, Accord and TSX owners who have had brake pads replaced before 70,000 miles will be eligible to "receive one half of the cost of repairs, or a maximum of $125, whichever is less." They will also "receive $150 towards the cost of a set of new rear brake pads that Honda says will last longer than the units being replaced." The amounts don't sound like much, but if all affected owners make the claim, "Honda could be on the hook for well over $100 million."

Honda, however, will not have to issue a recall over the brake wear problem, or acknowledge that anything is wrong with the cars. The Times notes, "The proposed settlement says that Honda denies there is a defect or that it has done anything wrong. The settlement also says neither Honda nor the plaintiffs' lawyers have identified a safety problem."

I discovered this site when I googled about premature brake problems on my 2008 Accord. It is ridiculous that I have rear brake problems on a car with mostly highway miles. I bought this car brand new in 2008 and have been the only one to drive it. It currently has 22,560 miles on it and I started hearing a squealing noise about a week ago. I stopped in my local Honda service center and had them check it out. They told me that the rear brakes were completely gone. I was shocked! I don't have very many miles on this vehicle and wouldn't the front brakes wear on a front wheel drive before the rear brakes?? I am very frustrated. The service department informed me that they are aware of a brake issue and Honda is aware of the issue. They were replacing the brakes under warranty, but Honda will no longer allow them to do this. I had to pay $200 to replace the brakes!! This is ridiculous and from what I am reading I am not the only one having this issue with this vehicle. Honda needs to obviously fix this problem and cover these repairs under a recall or warranty. This is unacceptable to me that they have not taken responsibility for their premature wearing brakes.

Accord EX-L 2.4L 4 cyl

I began hearing a severe grinding sound coming from the right-rear wheel. It started off, as only making the squealing / grinding sound when I applied the brake pedal. Then after about 2-3 days, it would continue making the noises, until I would ever so slightly apply the brake pedal. This would usually make the noise stop. I called my local Honda "Stealership", and requested them to look at the car. After arriving at the dealership, they told me it would take roughly 30 minutes to check out the problem. After almost 2 hours, they came back and said I needed to replace my rear brakes. I was holding my 1 year old son in my arm, as the Service Department Manager, began to tell me about the brakes and rotors. I, like most of you, were FLOORED! How can a front-wheel drive car, need new REAR brakes, after only 24,000 miles!? Then she proceeded to tell me "Don't worry sir... this is a safety issue! We will make this right, because your son deserves it!" I would hope so... but what if this were my wifes car? My Mom's car? My brother's car? Would they not receive the same consideration, and care? I would hope so!

Well, after another 2 hour wait, my car was finished. She told me she was only able to "Warranty Work" the car, because she entered my mileage into their computer eight thousand miles LESS, then what my actual odometer stated. After leaving the dealership, I noticed that they turned my rotors, and replaced my pads. I would think, that if a car had metal to metal contact for an extended period of time, you would replace the pads, as well as the rotors! Guess not.

I am very disappointed in Honda's craftsmanship, and even more disappointed in the fact that they are not claiming this as a problem, and fixing it! I will be very hesitant in purchasing another Honda in the future. This is my first non-USA built vehicle. I have owned several Ford trucks, and you can bet that I will more then likely go back to Ford, once this car pisses me off enough to trade it in. Let's go Honda... Get with the game!

Rear Brakes squealed bad. I inspected the front and rear brakes. Rear brakes were worn completely down. The front brakes looked nearly new. Had Just Brakes replace rear brake pads. On April 12, 2010 (5 months later), I noticed another squealing of the brakes. I went to a parts store and purchased replacement front brake pads (lifetime - ceramic pads). When my mechanic installed the front brake pads, he noticed that the pads were glazed smooth. The pads were approx 3/8" thick - barely worn. I had the pads replaced anyway. I think that instead of front pads doing the majority of braking efforts, the rear pads were doing nearly all the work and caused very premature wear.

I want Honda to reimburse me for both repairs.

Just talked to Honda. A Class Action lawsuit is being filed about the break problem as, as a result, they couldn't talk to me about this. I'm at over 60k and this will be my second set of breaks. I do 90% highway driving, no way breaks should wear this fast. So I guess I get to pay for this set (first set was $400) again and wait to see what's left after the lawyers get done.
