Accord LX V6

  • 40,000 miles

We noticed a noise in the car when we would put it in reverse. This awful whining noise. Then we started noticing that the brakes were squealing - with less than 40,000 miles on it. It just all of the sudden started happening. Then we started getting this really strange noise in the rear-end that had nothing to do with the brakes. It was not a squeaking, grinding noise, it actually sounded like there were a bunch of metal parts being shaken around. People would actually stop and stare it was so loud. Took it to the dealership - brakes worn out. Not sure of the rotors yet.

At 22000 miles heard brake warning sound. I checked the brakes and both rear inside pads were worn to the warning device. The outside pads and front pads were hardly half worn. Checked the internet and saw this was a problem and Honda was not taking care of fixing the problem so I did not contact them. I replaced the pads myself. My dealer now tells me that they will cover up to $150 to repair if they wear before 3 years use.

I'll add myself to the list of previously satisfied Honda owners. I've owned four and I bought my 2008 Accord with the expectation that, as a Honda, it would be very low maintenance, as my others have been. I recently experienced the same premature rear brake wear-out that many others have stated. When the squealing started at around 23,000 mi, I assumed there was a small rock stuck in the brakes somewhere (which has happened to me before and was easy to remove) because it was way too early to replace brake pads, even front brakes. Took it to my local shop and they showed me visually that the rear inner brake pads were nearly completely worn, and rear outers were also worn but not as much. Fronts have plenty left. So 2 problems: 1) way premature wear-out, and 2) uneven wear between inner and outer pads.

Very surprised that Honda could have allowed this design flaw. Even more surprised that Honda has not admitted the defect with a recall. I took it to the dealership that I bought it from and did battle for 2 days. The first 2 guys I spoke with said it was "normal for this car" and the rear brakes are designed to wear faster than the fronts. Baloney. The night between those 2 days, I read all these postings and figured that I'm in good company, it's not just me. So I was very insistent with the dealership's service manager the next day and finally they agreed to pay a portion of the cost for rear brake pad replacement (I was still out $80, plus the hassle). The manager did admit there is a problem. I do appreciate that he was able to help me a bit, but I don't think they'll help me next time, and from what I'm reading, I should expect to pay around $200 every year and a half or so; not what I signed up for.

It only takes one bad experience to ruin 16+ years of good Honda experience, especially when it involves flat-out lying, and denying a problem that is obviously a known pattern, and moreover that involves safety. Honda, if you're reading this, I think you may have lost me, and I have been very loyal to you.

Front pads great. Back pads, nothing left. On a front wheel drive, don't the front usually wear first. I usually don't have to replace my brakes until I hit about 100,000 - 120, 000 miles. This sucks. I hope they pay for part of this! I put my first set of brakes on my Hyundai Santa Fe at 124,000 and believe it or not, I replaced the original tires on the Santa Fe at 136,000. Oh yeah, my tires have flat spots on the rear tires on the Accord too, so I will have to replace those crappy Dunlop tires as well. Is something wrong with the back end that its burning through the brakes and wearing my tires as if they have a broken radial belt???

2008 Honda Accord def has problems with rear break wear. I drive Hwy and hardly ever use my breaks. My front breaks are fine but I had to replace the rear breaks and rotors, once I heard the metal to metal, it was too late. As soon as I heard the metal to metal noise I brought it in. I had a Honda CRV for 11 years and never even replaced break pads on that vehicle, I don't believe I drive any differently.

Accord EX-L 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 23,000 miles

I own a 2008 Honda Accord V6. I have 23,000 miles on it. Approximately one week ago I started hearing a terrible metal on metal sound coming from both rear brakes. I ended up at a wonderful shop in Lexington, NC (Mock's Tire). They continued to inform me that not only did I need new brake pads, as they were practically gone. I also need new rotors, the severity and speed of wear on the pads had rubbed the rotors down so far within one week that they could not turn them, only replacing them would make the safety standard. I will give it to them that I got a pretty good price. They said they have no idea how rear brakes could ever wear so fast. They said their best explanation would be someone driving while having the emergency brake pulled. I have certainly never ever done that. This is a defect in Honda rear brakes. Front brakes are fine and they take most of the wear in cars with any reputation worth mentioning. Honda needs to recall this problem immediately. Not only am I completely bitter with them not covering this with this being my first Honda car, but I don't want to find that someone has the same problem and is severely injured due to brakes not working. This is sad and Honda needs to own up before we are not only spending money prematurely, but are getting injured... We all know where that could make Honda end up.

Accord

  • Automatic transmission
  • 30,000 miles

I have a 2008 Honda Accord, 30,000 miles on it bought it brand new. We do mostly highway driving. My wife told me the car was making a screeching noise so I listened to it and it sounded like there was maybe a rock stuck in the brakes. She took it to Les Schwab and they told her the rear brakes were worn out. I was floored. I had never heard of brakes wearing out so quickly. I have not changed the brakes in my other car for over 120,000 miles, so that is the type of driver I am. I told her to take it to Honda service department to confirm this and to see if Honda would cover this under warranty because I was sure it was a defect. They said it was normal wear and tear. I call BS on that. So I called Customer Assistance (1-800-999-1009) and told them about the issue. they said they would get back to me within the next couple days. In the mean time I have to shell out almost $200 to get this fixed before I ruin the rotors. LAME!!

This is the second set of brakes on my Accord. The first set went at 20,000 miles, thought it was a fluke. It is a Honda... bad pads can happen... fine. Honda of Walnut Creek replaced them for $277 - ouch! Fast forward to today - car is slightly less than 2 years old and the second set of pads are going on the moment I am done writing this at 42,000. Call Honda of Walnut Creek to complain, told the gal there are over 800 complaints about this on carcomplaints.com and she was a zombie. Her boilerplate answer "These are smaller brakes than the front". I asked if they would replace them at no charge and she said "no"... "Even though is it is known problem?" "No"... Odd since rear brakes only manage about 20% of the braking of the car. Anyway.. was told to use Akebono brakes... bought them at CarQuest for $50. Honda has screwed up and has yet to own up to it.

Accord LX 2.4L In Line 4

  • Automatic transmission

Bought the car new in 2008. Started to hear noise on brakes a few weeks ago. It get worst,

took to dealer and told me to replace the rear brakes. I told them I need a second opinion since it doesn't make sense with front wheel drive. My last car (Maxima) didn't need to replaced rear brakes until 80K miles. I asked if it covers under warranty and they said it is my driving habits causing it. The service manger is getting impatience with the questions and walk away. This is the first time I own the Honda and will be my last time too.

Replaced the brakes with my mechanic and plan to trade in the car. Anyway the car is noisy too on long trip and poor gas mileage. (<23mpg 50/50 on city and highway)

Honda is behaving like the old GM. It will go down hard.

Not much I can add - horrible alarm-buzzer sound from the back brakes; 1mm left on pads, mechanic said he has seen "a lot" of this in the 2008 Accord and that he keeps checking to see if Honda has issued a TSB about what is obviously a common problem. I had them replace with ceramic pads.

The car only has 56000kms on it and the rear brakes just started making this weird noise, sounds like a chain dragging on the ground under the car and when I put the car in reverse and back up the rear brakes make a howling sound. I haven't taken it into the dealer yet but judging by what I've read here I'm gonna be SOL. We used to drive an Intrepid and we bought the Honda because we were tired of all the silly little things going wrong with it but I'm thinking I made another mistake by purchasing the Accord.

When the car was brand new with 1200 kms on it we tried the A/C for the first time and it didn't work, turns out the condenser had a pin hole in it which the dealer blamed on a rock, I had to cough up $500 myself, I was so pissed off I decided I will never, ever buy another piece of sh*t Honda. Paint is peeling off left mirror, no warranty. There's a clunking sound coming from one of the front struts. This car is a piece of SH*T!

Heard intermittent squeal when going through a tunnel. Began listening more closely and had it checked. Dealer said the pad wear on back brakes was zero.mm at 19.000 miles. 9mm on front. Said Honda would pay for half the cost of rear brake replacement. This is obviously a defect in product.

We also hate the headrest slant problem, the terrible radio reception and sound, the buckboard ride and the road noise. We have leased about seven Hondas in a row. This will be our last Honda ever!

Accord LX 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 29,000 miles

My cars brakes started squeaking occasionally around 4 months ago. Consequently, I take it into the service shop, only for the service guy to say that he can't hear anything. Pretty fine, since I couldn't hear anything at the test drive either. He said to come by if you hear anything WHEN you pass by...how convenient. It's obvious that I would be headed somewhere with a time limit anytime I pass there. I can't just roll in my car ignoring any previous obligations. Anyway, 4 months later, I start hearing rumbling noises in the rear and when I got my car in, they say the break pads have VANISHED when my car is at 29,000 miles. How can this happen so quickly to the rear breaks, while the front breaks are fine???? There is definitely something seriously wrong in the breaking control system causing the rear breaks to wear out so fast, without touching the front break pads. This is a serious defect, which could possibly lead to a major accident. Honda should really think over what happened to Toyota when they tried to cover up their accelerating problem.

This is the 2nd brake job before 40k miles. Will never buy a Honda again. had Hondas for over 20 years. They are becoming like Toyota, covering things up. Last accord had trans problem ,dealer said nothing was wrong, month later trans blew, then they said there was a recall. That was on 2004 accord. 2008 civic came missing chrome muffler cover . dealer said someone stole it off my car. Complained to regional Honda, they said Honda screwed up. had to repair brake shields myself , brought to dealer ,repair lasted 2 days. my neighbor and I repaired it by opening shields a little wider. Now my ex 2008 accord with brake problems. Honda needs to look at itself otherwise it is going to lose many loyal customers

my wife must have purchased the only 2008 accord with a properly working brake system known to mankind. 27000 miles and no brake problems ?? that is impossible!! when checked at the last lof , the rear pads were just under 50% . the only thing that we did was a simple servicing of the pads and caliper/brackets . a disk brake pad is designed to have movement(minimal) . if the pads are seized in the brackets ,designed function stops ,and pads do not wear properly . its about time for people to become responsible for basic automotive maintenance . at some point you will have to take ownership of your 5 year investment .

Update from May 9, 2010: just what i expected ,a nasty e-mail calling me a small minded person . well,we must be doing something many people are not doing . how else do you explain our lack of brake problems ? i will let one of you highly automotive educated individuals tell me what is really wrong . just a bunch of people that want something for nothing. i should not be surprised with the way society is today (class-action lawsuits -blah, blah , blah..) please do not buy another honda , and see how great some of these other brands are .i have owned many other brands and the customer service is not even close to honda . so do yourself a favor and buy another brand so you can complain about it also...........
