Accord EX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 26,000 miles

I own a 2008 Honda Accord EX-V6 with 26000 miles. Started hearing squealing noise from rear brakes and suspected rear brake pads were wearing out. Came on this web site and could not believe the hundreds and hundreds of other people having the exact same issue with the rear brakes on the 2008-2009 Accord model line. Also noticed that with almost every single report that I read here, Honda and the dealerships are NOT standing behind the issue and forcing the car owners to pay for the repairs themselves. I also noticed that the "average" repair cost that the dealerships are charging people to remove and replace the rear disk brake pads with Honda OEM pads is between $200 - $250. In my mind, this is just crazy. If the root cause of the problem is that the Honda OEM brake pads are made of a material that is to soft and wears out to fast...then why in the world would you want to pay that kind of money to the dealership to remove the worn out soft break pads only to put new (soft) brake pads in?

I went to the internet and did a "search" on www.youtube.com. There is a very informative video on there of a gentleman who has a 2008 Accord 2 door. He shows you step by step exactly how to remove and replace the rear brake pads on your Accord.

I went to my local AutoZone parts store and purchased new Ceramic Ultra Quiet - Premium ceramic pads (part # DGC1336) for the rear brakes. The cost $59.99. Oh yeah....they have a LIFETIME WARRANTY so if they wear out again, they replace the pads for free!!!

It took me about 45 minutes total to change the rear break pads on both of the rear wheels of my 2008 Accord and that was with a 5 minute break to answer a phone call from my wife.

Now this may not be the best or ideal solution to the Honda problem. Honestly...they should stand behind their product and announce a recall for the rear brakes in my opinion. With that being said though, it appears that this has not happened as of yet and that the individual dealerships are making alot of money off of people to replace these soft brake pads that are being installed at the factory and wearing out way to fast.

Watch the instructional video on Youtube for yourself. Its really very easy to change these brake pads and save yourself alot of money in the process.

Update from May 12, 2010: I had the same problem that everyone else is having with their rear brakes. Mine wore down at 26,000 miles and needed to be replaced. I did the job myself a few weeks ago and saved myself big money.

2 seperate things have happened since I had this issue that i thought you all should know about....

1) Honda Customer Service told me that they would refund me the money (up to $150.00) for what I spent to replace the rear pads in my 2008 Accord.

2) Yesterday I brought my Accord back to the dealership for its yearly inspection sticker. The service tech told me that Honda is now replacing the rear brakes for ALL CUSTOMERS FREE OF CHARGE. They are installing new rear brake pads with some kind of new spring assembly that pushes the rear pads off of the rear disk when the brake pedal is not depressed. This is the cause of the problem. The rear brake pads are touching or dragging on the actual disk even when the brake pedal is not pressed.

It sounds like Honda is finally addressing the issue.

Murphy's law that the problem would happen on the weekend when the dealarship is closed ..had to fix b/c the noise was TERRIBLE at regular speed and had to drive to an interview ...out of state ..what am I going to do ,ride on bad brakes??/ I don't think so.

Took it to Sears ... rear brake pads were GONE at 30k ...highly suspicious of a problemo as fronts usually go out 2-3 times before rear ...front pads looked like they had hardly been used acording to the guy at Sears.

Called Hendrick Honda today and they were hardly sympathetic ..."you had after market brakes put on ?" ..no , Einstein , I made them in my garage out of stuff I had on my bench. In any case since the brake spring was defective , should have been a recall imo , I would have taken it in and had the rear pads , caliper replaced on their dime .

Problem is the brakes are worn out according to Ken Garff Honda dealer of Riverdale, Utah. When asked to replace them under warranty they refused stating brakes are not covered under warranty. Is that correct or should the brakes be covered under warranty? I did not allow them to replace brakes, if I have to pay for replacement I will have my regular mechanic do it at half the cost. With all the problems Honda is having on the brakes why is there not a recall. I would recommend that no one buys a Honda until they start honoring their warranty.

Took my Honda Accord to the dealer for oil change and he tells me the back brakes need replaced. Only got 24,000 miles on vehicle. I schedule appointment but then when I go in to have brakes replaced I asked is this covered under warranty? Answer from Ken Garff dealership is no that it is normal wear and tear. I did not have them replace the brakes I will have my regular mechanic. This morning I call Ken Garff to confirm this is not under warranty and they tell me it was because Honda used to soft of material for the brakes and it is not covered. Person refused to give me their name. I warn everyone do not purchase Honda vehicle products they do not stand behind their warranty, they are using inferior products (probably made in China), dealership is rude. This was my first Honda and my last. Total BS from Honda. Buyer beware when considering Honda vehicles!!

My brakes started making horrible noise so I had a friend who works on cars check it out. He was going to replace them and looked online to get a cost estimate for the actual parts and found a bunch of complaints about this issue. So, I called 800 999 1009 option 7 (product concern) and told them about complaint and they said I need to take it to the honda dealer and have them diagnose it, of course there will be a charge, and knowing the dealership, a hefty one.

If this is a known problem, why do I have to pay Honda to have them diagnose it? NOT happy with this car. Does not ride smooth like it should. Would NOT buy another Honda!

Accord EX 4 cyl

  • 29,412 miles

About a week or so after driving my car off the lot (brand new), I started noticing a significant amount of vibration when braking. I mentioned this issue to the dealer whenever I took it in for its regular maintenance (oil changes etc) and was told that sounds pretty normal as the newer Hondas are now a bit louder than the older ones. I had just traded in my 1998, so I was basically noticing and mentioning the difference btw. the two. Well this is almost 2 years later and the vibration now included a sick sound along with it. So, a few days ago I took it in and they informed me that my back brake pads are shot and that my rotors needed to be resurfaced. Seriously?? At 29,412 miles I'm replacing my rear pads and resurfacing my rotors.

Needless to say I'm in shock with the lack of quality in Honda parts. I've been a loyal customer since my first Honda Accord back in 1995. This experience and knowing I'm not the only one going through this hassle and dissapointment has surely turned me away from ever buying another Honda Accord. I've left a message for the service manager so hopefully, they will at least reimburse me the $209 I paid. I will also call American Honda, I'm sure the more complaints they get the more they will take the matter into serious consideration. I can't see Honda willingly losing customers over such a petty, yet costly matter.

This is my second Honda Accord and it will be the last. I traded my 2006 for 2008 Honda Accord EX. I have not been happy since day one with its performance. After 13000 miles I was told that needed a back brake job. It cost me $146 dollars and I was told that it was common for them to wear out that fast. Now it is Apr 2010 and I am told that the front brakes have to be replaced at 27000 miles. It is estimated to cast roughly $250 to $300. This is ridiculous!!!!! I can't believe that Honda can't do better than this.

Accord EXL V4

First Hello to everyone in this forum.

I have been watching this forum for a while since I noticed a premature wearing of the brakes on my Honda Accord 2008. As everyone says I am a good driver too. I bought this car in Feb08, and end of march10 I am just above 22k miles. I did not have any problems so far with brakes apart from regular rear shelf rattle. I love this car whenever I drive, firm and crisp on road. I have now registered just for you people to say that I have been to the dealer today at Charleston. WV. I told the service dept everything about this issue and asked them to check my brakes. They were kind enough (as they know me as reg customer) and said the brakes were fine and for this model Honda has come up with COUNTER MEASURE PADS AND RESURFACE ROTORS for front brakes and good news is..this is covered under warranty. So they have ordered this part today for me and will install once arrived prob some time next week. So guys if your are experiencing the same problem like brakes wearing, ask your dealer about it and tell them regarding the above said part. I know how annoying it is to spend money on which is not in budget. Apart from this ,it is a lovely car. Hassle free.

Once again thanks for everyone who posted on this site, def helped me.

Well here's another one to add to the list. It's very similar to everyone else's complaint, under 21K miles and the pads are shot. The dealer told my wife they will turn the rotors for $105 which is half of the cost (which I would believe assuming I fell off of a turnip truck yesterday) I told her to bring the car home and I would handle it. I call Honda.....and so far they are dancing around the subject telling me that they really haven't had this problem, that is until I told him it was all over the internet.

From what I'm hearing from the service manager, there is a TSB on this problem right now. They are going to replace something in the calipers similar to the fix they used for the front brake problems they had. He said more or less we've all been driving as if our E brake was partially engaged which actually answered my question as to why the gas mileage has not been as good as our previous Accord.

As it stands right now I am waiting to hear back from the regional service rep who basically paid me lip service and said he'll check with the dealership.

Update from Apr 12, 2010: The problem has been resolved in a round about way. After spending more time on the phone with Honda America in which I once again got the run around about how it is normal wear for the rear brakes (but they have their engineers looking into the problem which makes no sense if it is "normal"), my wife called the dealership and after much discussion they decided to fix the problem free as a "goodwill" gesture, but the next replacement would be at our expense.

Basically Honda America has the dealership in a bad place because if the dealership admits there is a problem it then would be getting calls from Honda. Basically Honda has not only the consumers but also the dealerships in a bad place rufusing to handle the problem or taking any blame for it.

My wife has owned 4 Hondas including this one which will be her last. I think we as Americans should finally wise up and keep all of our money here and buy only American made cars made in America (which would include boycotting American made cars built in foreighn countries)

Accord EXL V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 32,000 miles

My 2008 Honda accord with 32,000 miles just had it's rear brakes replaced for the third time. First @ 12,500 miles and second @ 19,700 miles. This time the dealer has replaced them for free based on what I am told is a new program Honda instituted in January 2010. I was told that for three years from January 2010 forward my rear brakes would be replaced for free up to $150 cost ( prior cost was $110 each time) and unlimited mileage. I asked for this in writing and was told it was a verbal program that only applied to 2008 & 2009 Accords. I was also told that Honda had no permanent fix for this major safety issue.

Can anyone help in verifying this program and publishing it's details? Everyone with this problem should know about this program. I Googled "2008 Honda Accord brake problems" and read that owners as late as mid-March 2010 were still being charged for rear brake repairs by Honda dealers. This obviously conflicts with what I was told and the free brake job I just received. I could find no mention on the internet of this new Honda program. Even though this program helps with the frustration of replacing brakes every 11,000 miles I am still waiting for Honda to step-up, find a permanent fix and issue a recall for this safety issue.

This is my second rear brake replacement. The first one was on 04/03/09 at 24,951 miles I got my 2008 Honda Accord 4dr 4cyl Auto on 07/08. This one was at 38,491 miles, which is 13,540 miles only. I just realized it after arriving home and upon checking all my repair records ( I do keep all my records). I immediately called Penske Honda in Ontario, California.... and I was told that it could be my driving habits and/or its a normal wear and tear since that is how they designed the new Honda Accord.

I was not given the options to have it recheck since I told by the gentleman that the second replacement was only after 13,000 so miles.

Only to find out today that there is actually a notice sent out regarding rear brake problems. I still have to take my accord to the dealer and find out if they will honor the notice or not.

Sorry but I'm not really a cursing-yelling person, although I have a lot of things in my mind that I am pretty much sure they don't want to hear.

Update from Apr 9, 2010: I posted the complaint # 778. The service bulletin 09-096 posted on the internet is just a communication between Honda America and the Dealers. I called my dealer and inquire about this service bulletin and i was advised to call Honda. As per Honda America , it is not a recall or solution to our problem. it is just another wear and tear and it will not extend the warranty nor replace the parts. The service personnel will still have to get back to me in one to two business days. Another wait and see.

I strongly suggest that all Honda Accord owner call Honda America at (800) 999-1009 and file a complaint. The more complaint they received - the more and faster action they will respond. Otherwise, we will just have to keep paying for those brake pads and rotors, which are not cheap.

Update from Nov 10, 2010: I wrote complaint # 778. After filing and faxing information to Honda America re: brake issue and the work receipt, and after spending nearly $264.00 on brake pads, they finally called me and told me that they will reimburse me for $50.00 as a sign of good gesture. And any other cost would be on my own.

I did argue the even if they send me $50.00 of the pads were to wear out just the same, then it is not really a solution. I did asked if there were changes to the pads being used right now? and YES!!! it is a new pads but still under study if it would solve the problem or not.

Meanwhile we continue to pay for those pads and if it fixes the problem, good for us - better for them. if it does not, its another fix-it issue for them and another cost for us. Whether if its a fix or not, we already paid for the cost and reimbursed so little that in the first place, those pads should have lasted anyway.... and they should have tested it first before putting it in the consumers hand.... right???

If you need to respond or have comment on these issues, my email address is jir399@gmail.com.

After only 23,000 miles, I started hearing this rattling type sound coming from the rear. At first I thought it was something in my trunk or back seat that was making the noise. After going online and doing some research, to my surprise I found that there is a premature break failure on the recent Honda Accords. The descriptions of the experiences of other complainants were exactly like mine. I had a Toyota with over 200,000 and had to replace the rear breaks only ONE time. This is unacceptable. My car is still under warranty, and I have an appointment with the Honda dealer tomorrow. I'm telling them I want the breaks replaced at NO cost to me.

Update from Apr 8, 2010: Honda dealer acknowledge the problem with the 2008 and 2009 Honda Accords. They said they would participate in covering a portion of the cost for the replacement break pads which is about $175. My portion is $65. I wasn't too thrilled about having to pay anything, but the service manager said it's because breaks are a 'wear" item. I'm still going to file a complaint with America Honda directly.
