Overall I like this car. I was surprised to find that the brakes squealed at 31000 miles. I called AH to report this to hope for a silent recall but no such luck yet. I am taking it to the dealer to hopefully get these repaired free. Most rear brakes should last at least 60,000 - 90,000 miles. I have never heard of a car that wore out rear brakes this soon. And I drive at least 50% highway with little stop and go driving. I hope it is just the pad material that was faulty. I have to hope that Honda will be fair and pay for this since this is not a "cheap" car if you know what I mean.

Update from Sep 22, 2009: I took the car to Hugh White Honda and told them that I expected American Honda to pick up the tab. 3 hours later the car was fixed..new pads and rotors turned for no charge. The only concern I have now is how long will the brakes last this time?

Update from Nov 18, 2009: Overall, I really like this car.

I have had 3 issues with it. 1. Driver's door glass came out of seal. I fixed this myself in about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs. 2. When engine is in ECO mode you can sense strange vibration, but it is not too bad, just a little annoying. 3. The brakes started squealing at 31,000 miles. I believe these are the rears which should last at least 60K to 90K from my experience with other cars. I am taking the car in to have the brakes done by a Honda dealer at which time I am going to request American Honda to pay for them.

Good items; 1. very strong engine 2. decent fuel economy 3. roomy (have used like a truck to haul stuff) 4. controls and electrical are real well done 5. price is reasonable for overall quality of car

This is my 5th Honda, and maybe my 20th car. Have NEVER had rear brakes wear out before the front brakes. For Honda to tell me that this is due to my driving habits is ludicrous. You must take us for idiots. Can't say that I'll never buy a Honda again but am sorely disappointed in the company's approach to the problem

At my second oil change (~14,800 miles), the rear brake pads on my Honda were toast according to Honda employees inspecting the vehicle at Gunn Honda located in San Antonio, Texas! I have already had numerous issues with this lemon of a vehicle. Consequently, I was rather surprised to hear this. The first thing I did was to Goggle this issue to see what would be posted out there from other Honda Accord consumers. To my great surprise, this issue is shared by many customers across the nation. Clearly, rear brake pad wear issues at 15,000 miles is highly unusual for any car make and model. I called American Honda Motor Co.'s warranty department, which really was waste of my time. Terrible service and really pitiful to observe how a company can degenerate to support lies and unethical corporate policies for the sake of squeezing out an infinitesimal improvement in quarterly earnings. I hold a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and with specialty in automotive research and development. With this background, I can guarantee you that Honda Motor Co. goofed-up in the design of this vehicle. This issue of premature rear brake wear is a clear cut warranty issue, which should be covered under the legal "defects in materials and workmanship". The solution is for Honda to recall these vehicles.

I specifically purchased a Honda vehicle to avoid having to spend considerable amounts of money on repairs in the first several years of owning my vehicle. I find it disappointing that not only did the brakes wear out so early, but that there is no provision in the warranty to cover their replacement. I now know that countless other Accord owners have experienced this problem and I expect either to be reimbursed for the repair or to receive some other compensation.

Took car in for scheduled oil change and tire rotation. I was told at that time my brakes showed some "moderate" wear. A week ago they started to squeal so I suppose I'll have to fuss at the dealer tomorrow when I take it in. I have always been very happy with my Hondas , this is my 5th Accord, so we'll see what happens.

Update from Sep 15, 2009: I called the dealer Economy Honda, Chattanooga, TN and American Honda (as well as the BBB Autoline, the number is in your Honda warranty manual), both said that amount of wear is within "normal" brake life and it would not be covered unless the problem was caused by some other brake system malfunction. I took it to my mechanic (who is very honest) who inspected it and said it is just brake wear as all of the other brake system components were functioning properly and replaced the pads ($129 lifetime warranty, thank you very much Nick at H&W Auto).

Took our car to the dealership to report noise coming from the read brakes. The noise occurred while driving down the freeway to and from work without the foot on the brake. The dealership, "Bell Honda" in Phoenix, reported that the rear brake pads needed to be replaced and that there will be a $160 fee since it's not covered by warranty.

I asked to speak to the service manager, Jim Kole, and asked how much wear were on the rear pads and he said that they were both worn down evenly on each side of the rotor and they needed to be replaced. I explained that they should not need replacing with all the freeway driving we do.

I thought with all the freeway driving that it was odd that they need replaced at 24,000 miles so I decided to have the brakes checked at Brake Masters.

The Brake Master's technician told me that the 2008 Honda Accords are having this brake problem where the rear inside pad is wearing out pre-maturely. The technician took the wheel off and showed me the pads and I was shocked since the service manager at Bell Honda told me the pads had even wear. The rear inside pad had about a 1/16" of pad left and the rear outside pad had about 1/4" of pad left

We had the brake repair done at Brake Masters and decided on the lifetime warranty package since the 2008 Accord will be in once a year for rear brakes until the problem is corrected by Honda Corp.

Either the dealership mechanic lied to the service manager or the service manager lied to me. Either way the dealership decided to hide the facts from me.

I have a call into Jim Kole and I am waiting to hear back from him to find out what Honda is doing about the poorly designed, defective rear braking system on the 2008 Honda Accords.

My brakes were grinding and I thought it was a malfunction with my specific car until I starting doing some research and the tech at the Honda dealership told me that the brake pads on the 08 Accords were going around 20,000 miles! That is absurd! I purchased an Accord for the quality that you expect from Honda. Having to replace brake pads that often is not representative of a "quality" vehicle. Honda needs to do something to take care of this problem!!

I started hearing a screeching noise about 2 weeks ago. Didn't even cross my mind it could be my brakes. Then today, it became worse. So much so that when stopping it sounded like I was driving a semi truck. After going to the dealership I find out my rear brakes are bad. This should not be. From what I understand front brakes normally go out before rear and my front are still fine. When I asked the Honda mechanic about this problem he said they have been seeing this a lot in the 08 Accords. In fact, there was another one there at the same time with the same problem. I have 31,000 miles on mine and the service department said they have had to change them as low as 24,000. Apparently this is a known problem, however, Honda is not acknowledging it as a problem as of right now. I hope they do soon! I did not spend that kind of money to start forking out more money 15 months later.

2008 Accord LX with 19K. Company car. Mostly rural driving on PAVED roads; It has been driven >10K miles on long trips to Florida, TX, Colorado. No kids driving it. Just returned to KCMO last week from a roundtrip to Austin. The squealing sound in the back was driving my wife nuts. Luckily, I am deaf at that frequency. Set up an appointment for today. The rear pads were down to 1mm, but luckily, no rotor damage. I must say that Tiffany Springs Honda was very generous and replaced the pads FOR FREE. Another 29k??? In the meantime, I have written to the NHTSA and asked that they start a recall, for what it's worth. Good luck, Tim

Honda of America: You are probably monitoring this site and others that are reporting this problem. You are making a huge mistake by denying the problem. You have alienated a loyal customer base that you worked years to earn. Blaming driving habits and normal wear and tare for this brake issue is simply dishonesty on your part. Many people are selling their Accords or refusing to buy Honda again. This is not bluster or hyprbole. I have owned three new Accords and one new Civic. I am done with you. I just purchased a new 2009 Hyndai Santa Fe. We did not even consider the CRV because of your irresponsible position on this brake issue. You have done serious damage to your brand. Even with the bad economy, this will be come evident going forward as you review not only your new car sales but the amount or repair dollars generated in your dealerships. If the engneering of the car makes a mechanical fix impossible, you should heavily discount brake repairs going forward for all original owners. If you do this, you make be able to limit the damage to your sales going forward. As for me, you have waited too long and denied too much. You have lost me as a future customer . I drive 100 freeway miles a day. My brakes lasted 15 months and 30,000 miles. Unacceptable by any measure. I waited a long time to post this to see if you would corect this issue. I hope many othere who have waited will now post also. At a certain point it may become fiscally too painful for you to ignore this. I hope so.

Like many folks on here, I noticed a screeching noise coming from the brakes of my 08 Accord EX, took it to the dealership only to be told that the rear pads were worn out and that they are considered a wear part and are only covered 12/12. Being in the auto repair business most of my life I certainly understand wear parts, but the fact is that this is a Honda for gosh sakes and brake pads are supposed to last longer than 30K miles, ESPECIALLY ON THE REAR, ESPECIALLY WHEN 90% OF MY DRIVING IS HIGHWAY!!!!!!!! Rather than scream at the dealership, as they are obviously just following their guidelines, I placed a call to American Honda Motors corporate customer service center in Torrance, CA. Only to be told that my complaint was not legitimate, both by the inital call taker, and his supervisor. I told them both thank you for nothing and that I would be taking it further up the chain. I am currently writing a letter to what I have found to be the highest ranking Honda Executive in the US, Hiroyuki Yamada. The last Accord I had (03 LX), managed to get 78,000 miles out of the rear pads. It is not the money ($180 at Honda) that gets me on this, it's just the principle. Everyone knows that Honda makes great cars, but this is absurd. The pads seem much smaller than my 03, so if they did in fact redesign the calipers to be smaller to save a buck or a pound of weight for all of the tree huggers out there, well shame on them!!!
