Yet another premature rear brake problem on the 2008 Accord. The car has 34k miles and both the brake pads and rotors had to be replaced. The only good news here is that the dealer was great about taking responsibility for the issue. Yes, I was charged $100 for new rear pads and rotors - but I'm quite glad that I did not have to pay the entire $450 for the job. Also beware as I've heard of some dealers just reject this as being a Honda problem - which it certainly appears to be.

Yup me too! My rear brake pads wore out @ 15,000 miles. Unbelievable! Before owning the 2008 model, I had the 2002 model for 6 years and only had to replace the rear pads ONLY ONCE!!

Autowest Fremont Honda dealer was totally dicking me around. First they were trying to say it was my driving, but we all know the real problem. They made we wait for 3 hours for a oil change and brake inspection (I was the first one in). Did the usual "over warranty" spiel when they quoted $200+ to replace the rear pads AND GET THIS LADIES AND GENTLEMEN... an additional $240 to RESURFACE the front rotors! Yup they were warped already, and excuse me, but new rotors aren't even that much! In fact, they are already rusted out like others have mentioned on this site. What is up with the weak, ugly braking system for a car that has 268 HP and decent rims??

Anyways, I left irate and had Midas fix my car for $150.00 less. At this time (10k miles later) my rear pads are starting to get noisy again. I'm going to file a complaint with Honda and push for a brake recall. This is ridicoulous. I won't be buying Hondas again. Never thought I'd have to replace the REAR brake pads every year.

Accord EX-L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 14,897 miles

I brought my 2008 Honda Accord EX-L 4 cyl in for the second routine maintance on July 7, 2009. I was subsequently informed that my real brakes were shot, that I needed replacement pads and my rotors turned. I was astounded, I only had 14,897 miles on it. My front brakes were worn down to 7 MM out of 8MM! My rear pads were worn down to 1 MM of surface pad! They were basically gone! The red line for rear brake replacement is 3 MM or 4/32 for Disc Brakes. My brakes never squealed at all! No warning! No nothing!

The service rep stated that they have been seeing these things as of late without any explanation or what might be causing it and that Honda was aware of the problem. I told her that my understanding is that your front brakes primarily do the stopping of the car and that you should get at least 30-35,000 or more miles out of your rear brakes. ( My 2007 Toyota Camry has 40,000 on the rears and will need to be replaced shortly.) She said the brake replacement would run about $ 230+, but she would talk with the service manager to see if they could offer something off on the repair job, maybe split the cost. She stated that the car was over the 12 month/12,000 basic warranty which would have covered this problem. They gave me a free rental; I went to my office and found this site and all the horror stories.

I called the Service Rep, she said that they would split the cost of the repair. I told her what I found out and that this was not acceptable. I told the Rep that I wanted to speak with the Service Manager and the owner of the Dealership. That I don't think that I should pay for anything, that they knew there was a dangerous flaw with this car when they sold it to me. She also mentioned that a Honda Service Representative was there that day; I also wanted to speak with her. The only call that I received was that the car was ready and that as a gesture of good will, they would pick up the cost of this brake repair. I had entertained upgrading to a 2009 Honda Accord EX-L 6 cyl, but this put the brakes on those thoughts. This was my first and will be my last Honda and I will unload it a.s.a.p.!

Accord 3.5L V6

Took my car in for second oil change, was talked into B type service inspection. I was told that my rear brake pads were worn and would need to be replaced on the next oil change. This would be at about 26500 miles. I asked if this was normal and was told it was. Went back today to the service manager and told him my son has a 2007 Accord V6, 6 speed manual with approximately 65000 miles on it and the brakes haven't been changed yet. He just gave me the runaround and said that it just depends on your personal driving habits. He didn't say anything about Honda knowing of the problem or them working to fix it or anything. Only said that it would cost about $250 to repair. Suggested I call Honda America. I called and was told basically that Honda doesn't have any range of miles for brake wear out. Sounds like crap as all vehicles are thoroughly tested in the development stage. She also told me there was no one else I could talk to with this problem.

Update from Nov 24, 2009: Went around and around with the service department at Kuni Honda in Denver. They finally agreed to eat the cost of the pads if I paid for the labor (about $130) since I had a little time I told them I would think about it. A few days later my son (who owns the 2007 Accord) called me and said don't pay them to do the brake job, that he and a friend had replaced pads on all 4 wheels on his car for less than $80. I went to Advance Autoparts and bought lifetime pads for the rear for just over $40 and replaced them myself in less than 45 minutes. The hardest part of the whole operation was jacking the car up with the POS jack that comes with the car. I read step by step directions on a website and it was dead simple to DIY. Also FYI, my son found a posting on Youtube for changing the cabin air filter and I got one at Autozone for about $22 and It took all of 2 minutes to replace saving about $50-60 on what Honda wanted to replace it.

Seems I am not alone nor to blame for my 2008 Honda Accord Brakes wearing out prematurely. It does upset me to know that every 25K miles I will be doing a Brake job on my car. Oh by the way it was the Rear brakes. They were squealing very loudly and I was at first thinking that can't be me but it was! the recent compliant was on my new honnda accord 08, that is only 1yr 09mths old with only 19,183miles when I was told that my back brakes need replacing, and complained of all my brake rotors on the car has rusted and then told them about is was consider normal. how is that normal on a brand new car that is barley driven, i was very irate I was angry becuase every since buying this car I had mutiple problems with this car i barley drives I brought the car in Oct 2007 it was a brand new 08 Honda Accord

When I asked about the brake rotors they say a rust is completely normal were as I disagree never have I had a car or brand new car with rust already on a new car never seen rust on any brake rotoros of cars I own prior with this problem, will make this compliants with headquaters as well, I was told to pay 56.00 for the back brakes and they were being paid by Honda for a warranty parts when I quested that they said the reason why I paid only 56.00 is because honda will pick up the rest as a warranty part so the dealrship can get paid sounds a chop shop to me and the get paid the full price as it was a warranty parts, they reason i aslo paid that much is becuase of the miles and the is not that old and premature brakes wear. I was still outrage I have both paperwork stating the work they did and how they are going to get paid for warranty, if anybody knows anything about this type of behavior let someone know as well because I will

My 2008 Honda Accord was making screeching noises when I accelerated. I thought perhaps it was brake dust and it would stop. After a week or so I decided to take it to the dealer and have them look at it. To my surprise, without even looking at the car, I was told by the service manager (who made it a point to tell me a dozen times that he has been working for Honda for 13 years and they have the best braking system on the market..) that I needed new rear brakes. When I asked him how it was possible that a new car need new brakes so soon, he congratulated me and told me that I must be a good driver because there are people that have come in and had to have new brakes at 10,000 miles. Well after hearing how wonderful Honda's braking system is and his longevity in the company, we gave in and $250.00 later we have new rear brakes.

My first car ever was a brand new 1993 Honda Civic and it was the best car I ever had. We have also purchased a 2007 Honda Civic at the same time we purchased the Accord; this car is driven back and forth to the city (over 100 miles daily) and we have no issues with the brakes. Its apparent that the Honda Accord has a faulty braking system and Honda needs to look into this and should recall the cars. It's pretty simple. I am planning on trading this car in prematurely because of this.

This week I started hearing a squeaking noise and then yesterday I heard the brakes grinding.

I took my Honda to my original dealer and it was confirmed that the rear brake pads needed to be replaced, labor was waived and they were trying to charge me $69.99 for the cost of the new brake pads.

The service manager and I spoke about this issue since my Honda has only 26000 highway miles I mean I do not even use my car on the weekend's when at home this is a drive only to work car. which is a 70 miles round trip 5 days a week.

He agreed and added that they lasted this long ,due to the car being use in highways 99 % of the times. The reality is that if I had been using my vehicle for city use it would last from 12000 to 16000.

He confirmed that Honda is aware of this and is researching the issue but has not yet determined the reason for the rear brakes are wearing down so quickly. He also added that normaly these rear pads should last approximately from a 100000 to 200000. Rear pads are not a significantly stress under normal breaking that is why they usually last this long.So if a rep tells you that is a driver problem this could be if they were the front brakes but not the rear breaks in this case the Honda associate is full of shi... .

After this chat the service manager agreed with me that this was not acceptable & charge $0.00 for the replacement or pads. I suspect that Honda will be doing a recall at some point in the near future or somebody will file a class suit any day now cause this rear brake wear is not a driver problem is a Honda problem. Let me add that I have owned three Honda civics, one Honda Oddysey,I currently owned a Honda Pilot EX-L which is my wife's car & I have now my first Honda Accord so I have been a long time Honda customer and I know my Honda's and had never had an issue as this one in the history of my car ownership history.

It looks like I'm another unfortunate member of this growing group. As others have done, I filed a complaint with American Honda Motor Co. I was told they are "looking into this issue", but I obviously have to eat the repair cost since it's "wear and tear". I'm going to buy a set of Axxis Ceramic pads for the rear and do the work myself. Hopefully I'll get more life out of them than the OEM pads. Any suggestions on what else I should do in terms of complaints that will hopefully give Honda a rightfully deserved kick in the ass to resolve this issue?

I couldn't believe when the service rep called me to tell me that the rear brake pads are worn and need to be replaced. The service rep mentioned she would talk to her Sales Manger to see what they can do after I said it was ridiculous. I immediately googled "2008 Honda accord rear brakes" and found out like the rest of us that there’s a major problem with Honda. When the Service Rep called back and i mentioned what i found on carcomplaints.com she said they were aware and would cover the labor charges. I'm out $65.00 and most likely will be back in another year to replace again or hopefully for the rest of us a recall should be coming.

Like the rest of you I noticed (about a week ago) this horibble griding noise coming from the rear passenger brake. The problem was, it was happening even when i wasnt braking. Which means the "warner" (small piece of metal that is attached to the caliper and as the shoe wears it will touch the rotor making a horrible embarrissing noise that will alert you to the problem) was touching the rotor without the brake being applied, trust me thats real bad.

Alot of you are spending money that you shouldnt have too. Your brakes are not wearing out because of poor brakes they are wearing out because the caliper is not retracted all of the way when you release the pedal which causes the brake pad to wear at an angle. Maybe the factory isnt putting enough grease on the caliper pins???

The solution is simple when you finally hear the noise (which may be a while if you dont ride with your windows down) take it to the nearest "backwoods" mechanic shop and have them grease your caliper pins. As long as the pad isnt worn too bad you will not have to replace it and greasing the pins will not cost that much.

Or you can just learn to change your own brakes, i know that sounds scary but trust me i tought myself how to do it 10 years ago and i havent had an accidet yet. There are plenty of DIY forums out there that will help you. I think this website gives you the ability to post pictures when i fix mine maybe ill post a how too if thats possible.

Has anyone gotten anywhere with this Honda Brake situation at all?? I too am a frustrated 2008 Honda Accord owner and really want to do whatever it takes to get Honda to do either A. Do a recall or B. pay for the brakes to be replaced every time they need to be replaced which for me has been TWICE in 1 year! This has been completely unacceptable and frustrating. You pay a good amount of money for a brand new car and have to pay extra for mechanical defects that are NOT the owners fault. This looks VERY BAD on Honda.

I have also called Honda, sent letters to Honda and filed complaints on BBB and highway traffic and safety. NOTHING has been done. The dealership tells me Honda is aware and that is it. Please someone help in this matter. As bad as the economy is right now people can't afford to get brakes replaced and fixed twice in one year that is completely unacceptable especially with the purchase of a brand new spanking car!

Never heard about this problem with Honda Accord breaks until this weekend when I noticed a screeching noise. Took it to the dealership the next morning and was told that the brakes need to be replaced. I was very surprised but had them fixed anyway because didn't want to drive with worn out breaks. When I came home, I decided to research this online and found numerous complaints about this exact problem.

Earlier this week I opened a case with the customer service department (1800 999 1009) and today I was able to speak with the rep who worked on my case. As expected, this didn't get anywhere. She just told me this is normal wear and tear and it wouldn't be reimbursed. Besides the brake system being horrible, apperantly their customer service dept is just as bad. They would not transfer me to a manager and would not provide me with their employee #. It's like a zoo over there. Everyone there is definitely aware of this problem but no one is talking about it. I spent about 40 minutes on the phone and didn't get anywhere. I am planning to write a letter but that department is probably being run by the same people so not sure how effective it will be. If you decide to call customer service like I did, be ready for a run around. They obviously get numerous calls about this issue and were probably told by management what to say. For example, they blame it on the driver.

I agree with the others on this site, that I will never buy a Honda ever again. Always had Toyotas before and never had any problems. Every chance I get, I will bad-mouth Honda to anyone who will listen. This is probably the most effecitve solution I can think of at this time.

Also, I would suggest going back to the dealership where the car was purchased and asking them to fix it for free. If they refuse to fix it for free, ask the service dept manager to call Honda customer service on your behalf. You might have a better chance of getting a reimbursement if a Honda service manager calls them.

I called the dealer today. 8/4/09 they stated that they are aware of the serious problem with all back brakes in the Honda Accord 2008 and 2009. Honda acknowledges there is a problem but refuse to fix it. They said the car brakes shelf life is 12000 -18000 miles.

Had I known about this big problem, I would have NEVER purchased the car in January 2009. I have 16,000 miles and my brakes are not working and they won't fix it yet they are VERY AWARE of the serious problem as they are receiving many many complaints from buyers. I was SHOCKED to google "2008 Honda Accord brake problems" and see the numerous complaints, all of which seem to have been blown off by Honda. I too bought this car (my first Honda) for the perceived image of reliability and am sorely disappointed to have to replace the rear brake pads after 25k miles! I've contacted my local Honda to complain after realizing it wasn't just an isolated incident with my car. My service adviser told me that he'll contact Honda America directly and get back to me, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until I hear back. For now, I'm out $151 for rear brake pad replacement. If I don't get a satisfactory response from Honda, I'll definitely be complaining to the BBB. I've never been involved directly in a problem of this magnitude, but it is clear from the data on this website that this item should be addressed by Honda or we should file a class action Lawsuit. I don't know how to go about starting that, but I imagine it's going to take some money unless we could collectively find a lawyer willing to take it on a contingency basis. I'll let you know when I hear back from Honda though!
