  • 20,000 miles

I have purchased several Honda vehicles in the past due to the reliability and reputation of the brand. The rear brakes on my 2008 accord are completely worn out at 20,000 miles. Normal wear. BS!! I have a 2003 GMC truck with 70,000 miles on the original pads. I contacted Honda customer care (1 800 999 1009) and spoke to Nicole regarding the problem. She mentioned that Honda was aware of the problem and has been working on resolution for a year and a half and that a determination should be complete within the next 3 or so months. In the meantime, I am out for the repair bill due to a faulty brake system design. Honda needs to stand behind their products. In the future, I definitely will consider other manufactures as Honda's quality appears to be suffering due to stiff competition.

I was furious when the dealership told me my back brakes needed to be replaced in this horrible economy i bought a new Honda because i dont have the time or money for repairs i just graduated college and of course can not find a steady job he said i had a little more time until they needed to be fixed now it is making a horrible noise and i got to thinking about it and talking to my family and we could not figure out why i already needed BACK brakes and then i realized the 2002 accord i had and the 2003 civic my sister has now both went through front brakes like crazy so yea Honda obviously has brake issues but its usually front not back so i googled it and immediately found over 300 complaints on this side i think Honda has started to bank to much on people buying because of their good reputation and now their cars are junk the last on i had the transmission went out and that was the specific reason i bought an accord was because i was sick of having transmission problems i am thoroughly pissed that Honda is taking such advantage of their loyal customers and will make a huge deal out of it if they do not fix my brakes under warranty!!!!!!!!!!!

I am the original owner. 8 months after I brought this 2008 Honda Accord EX-L (3.5L V6) the rear brakes went bad, it cost me $ 400.00 US dollars including labor work to fix.... Today 08-01-09 I replaced my brakes again, that cost me the same great price and the car only has 17,465 miles........ I am very disappointed with Honda head quarters and owning this car, because Honda Has not Recalled our brake system or done anything about this issue... For many reasons, I write to you and inform you not to buy this 2008 Honda Accord. I have been a Honda fan since my first car to my 5 Honda generation I owned... this could be my last generation for Honda because of Honda's lack to fix our car, is not just me is every one that own a 2008 Honda accord. If Honda wants to keep me as a customer in the near feature they need to fix this problem before my brakes are need to be replaced at around 24,000 -26,000 miles.... Otherwise, I am going to lose interest in Honda sell the car and bad mouth Honda to every one and than I'll GO BUY A NISSAN,TOYOTA,INFINITI or LEXUS.. GOOD LUCK to us, the people who own this nightmare factory defect problem that is still happening and Honda is not yet "Recalled it".

Accord EX-L V6

I drive approximately 100 HIGHWAY!!! miles every day, (50 miles each way). this is a ridiculous ware condition for the mileage, considering the fact that i drive 5 miles on one highway, 7 miles on the second, about 37 miles on the third highway and 1 mile on the last. There are only 3 traffic lights the whole way and no more than 4 stop signs! the entire way and at MOST!! I might hit my brakes 25 times if there is traffic.

I contacted Honda, and the North American "Customer Service Supervisor"(I didn't stop with the person that took my complaint) continuously tried to justify this as a driver problem, and that the car has different sized brake pads and Brake cylinders. Although he claimed a degree in engineering, he would not acknowledge the fact that if the single set of inside pads wore prematurely,(all other pads measured 5 to 6 mm, while these inside pads were 1mm) and these brake cylinders were a different size than the others (which he admitted), that the area's and forces must have been mis-calculated in design stage. this is now un-acceptable.

FYI.- my last Honda Accord was a 2005, a gem to drive, maintain and a pleasure to sit in for my hour commute. I replaced my brakes,NOT EVEN the rotors on that car at about 65,000 miles!!! "It "Ain't Me!!!!

I will no longer have Honda service my car

My wife traded in her VW Jetta, with 45,000+ miles, for this 2008 Honda Accord and never had the brakes replaced on the Jetta. Now, with only having the Accord for approximately 1 1/2 years and 20,000, we already have to replace the brakes. The "squeaking" noise had been going on for almost three weeks before she told me. We finally took it to the local dealership (sister dealership to the one where it was purchased) this past Saturday and they told us the brakes needed replaced. We were in shock because we did not even have to press the brakes for the "squeaky" noise to occur. Our service writer stated they had noticed a lot of the Accords, and even Civics, were having to have their brakes repaired around 20,000 miles. Apparently, the dealership knows about it but it is "normal wear and tear" so they will not fix it under warranty.

My wife's dad decided to help me replace them, instead of spending almost $200 to have the dealership replace them. After purchasing the brakes, from a local auto store, and a few extra tools, we tackled the problem. Well, the problem was much worse than we thought. First, the passenger-side rear brakes still had approximately 40% life left. But the caliper piston was stuck. The driver-side rear brakes were down to the indicator and again the caliper piston was stuck. So not only were both brake caliper pistons stuck but there was uneven wear. This is not "normal wear and tear" in my book. It appears to be a design flaw that needs to be corrected. And we all need reimbursed for having to pay for their mistake.

Now, we have a little boy and decided to trade the VW Jetta for the Honda Accord to have more room. Based on the fact the Accord is having brake problems, and they (Honda) are not responding, I no longer feel safe with my child in this car and wish we had kept the VW Jetta. It is a more solidly built car...and the brakes do not have problems!! This was my first experience owning a Honda vehicle and probably the last.

I already have to replace the rear brakes at 17,000miles on my new Honda Accord.

The dealership charged me $400. I purchased a Honda because of their reliability. This is unacceptable! I should not have to pay for new brake pads when it is a Honda default. I want to be reimbursed repair cost! and have 2008 Honda brake system recalled!

Update from Aug 20, 2009: I received a call and a letter from Honda mediation manager. Honda agrees to reimburse me 50% of total cost endured from replacement of rear brake pads, they also send me a release form. This is the reaction on my BBB complain.

I am not going to take their money and I am not going to sign release form. I believe that it is much bigger problem and they should recall!!!!

We are a first time Honda Car owner. We purchased our Honda Accord LX after extensive research which included Consumer Reports. At approximately 18K miles, we were informed by the Honda Service Department that our back brakes were down to 10% remaining on the rear brake pads. At 23K miles the Honda Service Department advise that the brakes needed to be replaced. I complained to no avail to the Dealership and to Honda America who advised that they stand by the engineering and workmanship of their product and this is a normal wear and tear item. Our driving habits are daytime highway miles and for rear brake pads to worn out at 23K is ridiculous. We own a 2000 Infinity I30 which required its first brake pad replacement at 110K miles, (actual need, not manufactures recommendation). Honda has a good reputation for producing quality products; I hope they will seize this opportunity to build brand loyalty by doing what is right for the owners of their 2008 model year Honda Accord. If not, I will never buy another Honda made product.

Started with metal noise coming from the back wheels. The noise was intermittent. It started first in freeway but later got more frequent and I could hear it in the city streets and my driveway. Took it to the dealer last weekend dealer where I purchased the car. The guy said it is a premature brake wear and normally this happens after 40000 miles. He replace the brakes had to pay $300 something. Asked him why this happened at this low mileage. He blamed my driving, that I shouldl keep distance with other cars and do not bake hard. BS. I have other Honda models and have been a Honda customer for a long time and never had this issue with any of them. HONDA should admit there is something wrong with 2008 Honda accord brakes and should reimburse its customers.

After taking my vehicle in several times for complaints relating to extremely loud brakes I was finally told that I needed to replace the rear brakes because they were completely worn. I must admit that I was perplexed as to why I would need to replace them so soon but based on many other issues in my life at the time I decided to pay to have them replaced at the tune of $400+ dollars. This week I take my car in for an oil change and when I leave the dealer I discover the loudest noise in the rear end. I return the car and am told yet again that I need to replace the rear brakes because they are completely worn! Now I am truly pissed off because both times I checked the service log only to read that at the time of the quality check I had 40% wear on the rear brakes but the fact is the brakes have been completely worn in both instances. So the quality check, which in fact they tell me is a visual inspection, which I would hope they are at least using a gauge for, is in fact NOT a quality check at all! They tried to tell me once again that this is normal wear and tear which in fact is also false. Soooooo I told the dealer that in fact I was aware that the new design in the brakes are flawed! I never thought to have my brakes repaired somewhere else but perhaps this is the answer. The dealer allowed me a 50/50 deal whereby I paid $107.00 to replace my second set of brakes at 39,000 miles. This certainly should be addressed by Honda and I will be filing a claim for them to reimburse me for the first set of brakes that I had to replace.

WE PURCHASED OUR 2008 ACCORD LAST NOVEMBER. NOTICED AT TIMES THAT THE BRAKES FELT "SPONGY" IF NEEDING TO STOP SUDDENLY. BEGAN HEARING A "TINNY" AIRY SOUND IN THE BACK. IT WASN'T CONSTANT, USUALLY STARTED AFTER TEN MINUTES OF DRIVING. WE NOTICED IT WHEN THE MILEAGE WAS AT 15,000.

OUR DEALER INITIALLY SAID EVEN THE NEW CARS SOMETIMES MADE THAT SOUND WHEN HE DID A COMPARISON. WE BALKED, THINKING HE PROBABLY DIDN'T HEAR IT DURING HIS BRIEF TEST DRIVE. WE WENT WITH THE MECHANIC ON A SECOND TEST DRIVE AND HE HEARD IT AFTER ABOUT FIVE MINUTES OF DRIVING. HE MENTIONED CASUALLY THAT THE 2008 ACCORDS HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH BACK BRAKE PADS.

ON RETURNING TO THE SERVICE AREA, THEY INFORMED US THAT OUR BACK BRAKE PADS WERE COMPLETELY WORN DOWN AND REPLACED ALL FOUR OF THEM. WE ARE LEFT WONDERING IF THE CALIPERS ARE BAD OR ARE THE REAL CAUSE OF THIS BUT THEY OFFERED NO FURTHER INFORMATION. AFTER READING OTHER COMPLAINTS, I FULLY EXPECT TO BE FACING THIS AGAIN IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

IF A RECALL IS NOT ISSUED, I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER HONDA. THIS WAS OUR FIRST AFTER YEARS OF RELIABLE TOYOTAS.

Accord LXP 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 21,000 miles

The 08 Accord appeared to have a designing defect with their rear brakes. We bought it in July 08 as our first new car. Two weeks ago, I heard a noise coming from the wheels and didn't pay much attention as everybody says Honda is equal to quality.

I had it checked at the local Honda dealer and they called to tell me that the rear brake pads need to be replaced. It was ridiculously unbelievable! The car has just 21K on it! They said this was not covered by warranty since it's 'use and wear' item and it was going to cost $250 to have them replaced. I asked them to put them back and I wanted to have a second opinion. When I went back to drive it back home, it began to make a CRAZILY HUGE NOISE. It's really scaring.

The next morning, I brought it to a local MIDAS and sat there waiting to see what's going on. They took it apart and showed me that the inner pad of the left rear brake had been worn DOWN to ZERO, EVEN NEGATIVE and one intruding part was then actually CUTTING the rotor! Holy Crap!!!! BTW, the counterpart outer pad looked to be fine. In addition, they told me the rotor had been grooved and I had to have them replaced. So I ended up replace all the rear pads plus the left rear rotor!!!

This is insanity! What could we do??? I've brought back the pads and rotor that had been replaced. Could that server as evidence???

As noted in the numerous complaints on this problem, our 2008 Accord with 26,500 mainly highway miles had to have the rear brake pads replaced and the rotors turned. We have never had a vehicle that needed brakes at this ridiculously low mileage. In fact our 2003 Toyota PU with 60,000 miles has not ever had the rear brakes replaced yet - only the front. The dealer told us the same thing as I read - normal wear and tear. We will be writing a letter to Honda - although I don't hold much hope that it will help. They have obviously made a serious design error in the braking system with this model and will not admit to such.

OMG, I thought I was the only one with the front and brake issue. Like most of you, I bought a Honda based on its reputation for being a really good car with safety being in mind. Imagine my great surprise when I found out that both my front brakes and back brakes had worn out by 20,000 miles! In fact, my back brakes were more worn out than the front brakes - that surprised me even more!!! Not to mention when I pulled the back brakes out they had worn out unevenly. Brought this issue up with Honda directly and they gave me the "song and dance" about this problem. Went to the Dealership (Ontario Penske Honda), only to be told that I was hard on my brakes and it was how I was driving...imagine that! Brakes are not the only problems I have had with this car. From day one I have had one problem after another with this vehicle (which I will be sharing under other complains on AutoBeef). Fortunately, I had leased this car so I just cannot wait till the day my lease comes up so I can get rid of this piece of garbage!!!

My story is the same as everyone else! I brought my car in to be check because there was a metallic noise in the brakes. Brewster Honda ( who I do not blame for this problem!) told me that the rear brake pads needed to be replaced! I said thats not possible, the front brakes should go before the rear. You should get 2 front brake pads to 1 rear brake pad. Then I asked if this was a defect? And maybe if it was I could get them replace under warranty? No, it was "normal wear and use". Normal!??!!! This is not normal!!!!! So I did a little research and found out that Honda changed the brake system in the 2008 Honda Accord. The brake system was 80/20 but honda changed it to 60/40 and never compensated for the pads. The pads either have to be thicker or Honda needs to change the brake system. Now we are out $319.00. We called Honda USA Main Headquarters to report this problem and got no where! They told us they didn't know what we were talking about and there were no complaints on this car! It's normal wear and use so no reimbursement! So now that are brake are fixed, whats going to happen in 8,000...10,000....24,000 more miles? More rear brake pads!!! SHAME ON YOU HONDA !!!!!

Purchased a Honda Accord (best selling car in America) because friends have had great success and reliability with them. The car is great but having to replace brakes every 20K miles is ridiculous. I've got a full size 4WD Ford with 80K and still has the factory brakes. I was told by the dealer (Pye Honda - Dalton, GA) this is a serious problem with the 2008 Accord, but it is not covered under warranty and I had to pay to replace the brakes in a car just over 1 year old. Pye is not the only one, I called several dealers in my area and none would fix the brakes. I can guarantee this it's my first and last Honda anything car, jet ski, 4-wheeler, motorcycle etc. I'll buy from another MFG that will stand behind their engineering. With over 300 current beefs posted here about this single problem I'll bet the "best selling" part of the Accord will soon be a thing of the past. I will direct any of my friends to another brand!

I complained to my Williamsburg, Honda about the awful noise coming from the rear wheel and on the 1st occasion was told the noise I was hearing was "just a rock stuck in the tires. 2nd occassion the noise was so loud, the Service Department heard me before I pulled into the parking lot. I was told then "There's nothing we can do about it". Didn't offer to fix the problem nor suggest for safety reasons that I take it somewhere else and have it fixed. I took my car to Firestone, had new ceramic brakes put on, wrote letters to Honda Motor Co, Inc with invoice from Firestone attached & contacted BBB & National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Williamsburg dealership informed me today I'll be reimbursed repair cost. I was told "The check is in the mail".

Update from Aug 13, 2009: After I complained to the dealership where car was purchased and problem wasn't resolved, I took my car to Firestone to have brakes repaired at the tune of $169.28. I then contacted American Honda Motor, BBB & National Highway Safety Dept and I don't know who lit a fire under who but, Williamsburg Honda Dealership called me a few days later to say they would be refunding my repair cost. I received my reimbursement on August 10, 2009. Thank you Williamsburg Honda of Virginia.
