I've been getting error code 520 on my check engine light, which is the catalytic converter may need to be replaced because of excessive oil engine being burned. I suspect this relates to the piston rings which are too tight (?) in my car, which is a known problem. There was a class action lawsuit with this issue, but no recall. See my other complaint for this issue. My engine burns a quart of oil every 1000 miles, so the only solution is using full synthetic oil. I have to add a quart of synthetic oil every 2-3,000 miles.

Catalytic converter caused check engine to come one, 3 estimates and all are costing about two grand!!!!!! I will never buy a Honda again, I am sticking with Toyota, the one i should have gotten this time. However Honda has the rep of being a great car, no problems, ability to pack on miles and miles and miles without the car giving problems. I bought car used but still this should not be an issue I should already having to be dealing with. Many have told me that Honda is notorious for making cars with bad converters on them. I believe that Honda, to make a buck, or to hurry up and get new cars out, skimped on parts, used sub quality parts, and so on, what else is the explanation of all the thousands of complaints Honda is getting?????

I have taken the car to the dealership several times and they still say they can't find anything wrong with the car but every time you rev up the engine you get a strong exhaust smell inside the cabin.

I was involved in an ongoing process involving misfires, oil usage and brought the car in with the check engine light flashing. I explained my problem and the maintenance history that indicated the warranty issue of the piston rings aligning in a manner that allows oil to pass. The technician noted that the code indicated the catalytic converter had failed. I said, "that makes sense, I have been burning oil like a worn out slant six". He said that would not cause it and probably it was a result of bad gas because they "have seen a lot of this". I explained that the fouled catalytic converter was a symptom of oil usage. Further, there are two catalytic converters, and only one was fouled, the one associated with the engine bank that was having the misfires because of oil fouling. That in itself proves that it is not bad gas, despite the fact that anyone who knows about catalytic conversion understands that it is not likely for gas impurities to foul a catalytic converter primarily on the inlet side, and being a component with so much excess catalytic surface. I paid for the catalytic converter because they steadfastly refused to cover it. I am certain it was damaged (fouled) by oil usage. I am a chemist, with many years experience, and the science proves that the oil fouling caused the failure. I have just filed a claim with American Honda and, in 8-12 weeks will hear their reply. I won't quit until they give me my money back. To have a service manager look me in the eye and give such a lame excuse for a problem that was caused by a warranty issue is unacceptable and insulted my intelligence. It's like when my college age daughter would go to an oil change place and end up spending a couple hundred dollars on stuff that she did not need. It's blatant and disgusting and downright dishonest.

Had car repaired 4 times for the spark plug misfire. Had several issues with near by Honda dealer with repair of the misfire which was under the class action lawsuit. Car was repaired in 8/2015, now catalytic converter is bad. Honda Service repair man said that it was due to using lots of different gas( not true only use BP gas). Wanted a second opinion, and took car to another mechanic who said that it is causes by the amount of misfires. Called Honda, and they said that they will not cover it, I need to bring in and have it repaired. Explained the misfire and second opinion (mechanic - informed me that direct cause of misfire). I was told that Honda will only repair with numerous complains and there have not been any complaints. Rep suggested going to nearby Honda to have it repaired. I loved Honda until the purchase of my 2010 Honda V6. Not sure I will be a loyal Honda customer anymore.

I read a complaint on this sight and had the exact same issue. Honda had to replace the short block after a computer failure that exploded the spark plugs and that then fell into the cylinders and scored them dumping unburned fuel through the catalytic converter which contributed to the failure. I haven't brought it to Honda's attention yet but I intend to make them fix it for nothing

I am told catalytic converter typically lasts the life of car. I am also told converter will fail prematurely if engine burns too much oil. Honda has admitted that my V6 engine burned too much oil related to VCM, first time they replaced some of fouled spark plugs and did software update @ 40K, 2nd time they replaced fouled spark plugs and replaced short block, and eventually paid entire cost following class action suit. Then at 104K one of the 2 catalytic converters goes. I asked they consider paying at least part of replacement and they have refused. I don't see how they can logically disown any responsibility for this when they admitted that their engine design caused excess oil consumption. How can they be so certain that the prior 2 problems had nothing to do with present problem?
Update from Nov 19, 2016: Honda never would pay for fix and I therefore I never had it fixed, was run into and car totaled @ 175000 mi, went to look @ new Accord but didn't buy one primarily for this reason, instead bought Lexus ES. I found Toyota much more responsible for their cars than Honda

Because of the VTC ACTUATOR AND THE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM WITH MY HONDA THAT THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO RECALL OR FIX, MY CATS ARE GOING BAD AND NOW I CAN'T EVEN GET A SMOG PASS, AND THE REPAIR COST IS RIDICULOUS OUT OF POCKET. MECHANICS SAY IF THE VTC ACTUATOR ISN'T FIXED IT WILL JUST CAUSE THE CATS TO GO BAD AGAIN. BUT THE VTC ACTUATOR IS DEFECTIVE. GRRRRRRR.
