CR-V LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 54,000 miles

My 2014 Honda CR-V has had a juddering/ shuttering issue since I drove it home in 2016. My car is now 8 years old and I’m teaching my daughters how to drive and this issue seems so much worse! I’m used to driving my car and preventing the juddering by either letting off the gas or pressing down a little harder on the gas pedal. The problem seem to occur with light acceleration when the transmission shifts gears and the RPM’s are too low around 1000/ 1300 RPM’s, when it is higher than that it doesn’t do it. It feels exactly like when you are driving a manual transmission vehicle and you shift to a higher gear and the RPM’s aren’t high enough so the car starts “bucking”.

Come to find out after doing some research this is a KNOWN issue with Honda CR-V’s. Thanks to all you guys!!! TSB 17-040 and TSB 15-086. Unfortunately for me I had no idea that Honda knew about this issue and now I’m out of my warranty period. This will be the last Honda I own. Switching back to Toyota. My Toyota’s have never let me down!!! I see there was also a class action lawsuit for 2015 CR-V owners but not my year. 😔 Wondering if I can file a lawsuit against Honda because they knew about this issue and failed to inform the owners of this issue before our warranties ran out.

CR-V EXL 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 61,352 miles

October 5, 2022: My 2014 Honda CRV EXL only has 61,000 miles on it, and suddenly it has a shudder under normal acceleration about 25-35 miles per hour when shifting. Feels like transmission is slipping or the torque convertor is not working correctly. The drivetrain warranty ran out last year at this time. There is service bulletins 17-040 and 15-086 about this issue.

CR-V LX

  • CVT transmission
  • 60,000 miles

2014 Honda CRV, 61,000 miles. It shudders when going 20 to 40 mph. The Honda Dealership did a program update and now it makes an excessive vibration, growling sound in addition to the shuddering. I have done extensive research and apparently the Honda CVT transmissions are the problems. There are numerous lawsuits for all different Honda models for years going back to the 1990's. The dealership I took it to said if the update did not work, then it would need a new Torque Converter. After more research, it appears Honda owners who have replaced the Torque Converter are still having issues and problems. I am going to find a Law Firm in my area to start a Class Action Lawsuit again Honda.

CR-V LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 35,000 miles

We're two family members and owners of the vehicle. 2014 CRV bought in August 2013 had many problems from day one and spent many days at Honda dealers getting Honda's factory defects fixed. American Honda in Torrance, CA pretended to care about our satisfaction with the car and their customer service. Regional case managers in California talked to me when I was able to reach them on the phone. As the power train warranty was approaching 5 years/60,000 miles (August 31, 2018 ~30,000 miles), Honda's employees' attitude changed. They no longer pretended to be concerned for our happiness and satisfaction with Honda's product and service. Specifically at that time, Honda's regional case manager was Jeff M. Exactly how their employer teaches them to sign letters to hide their identity. I don't know if he's still employed by American Honda. If he's still with Honda, I'd like to talk to him. He is/was clearly a biased shareholder.

Around June 2018 while at the local dealer for maintenance and other unrelated issues caused by the dealer while fixing Honda's factory defects, I reported to the service advisor a transmission shudder at light acceleration between 20 and 30 mph speed, especially when first driven in the morning. I also reported to Torrance. Because we were approaching the end of power train warranty the local dealer was also not interested in fixing another serious Honda defect, especially after fixing many other defects and dealer-caused damages in my CRV.

Tried and failed to diagnose, replicate transmission shudder several times until i suggested to leave the car over night, then come in the morning and drive it with a technician. Only then the tech felt and reported transmission shudder to the service advisor. Service advisor told me it'll cost $200 to fix. I contacted American Honda in Torrance. Jeff M. refused to talk to me because I'm not a registered owner of the vehicle. I explained to him how American Honda had no trouble talking to me when we first bought the car, but at the end of warranty they/Honda/Jeff M. give me attitude instead of coordinating service with the dealer. I have a very clear understanding why they do it. Jeff M. told me to go the DMV and put my name on the registration. I explained to Jeff M. that WE ARE FAMILY MEMBERS, OWNERS OF THE VEHICLE. IT'S NOT NECESSARY TO HAVE AN ADDITIONAL EXPENSE OF ADDING ANOTHER PERSON TO THE REGISTRATION. NO OTHER PARTY TELLS US WHAT TO DO. ONLY WE DECIDE WHOSE NAME APPEARS ON THE REGISTRATION AND IT'S ABSOLUTELY IRRELEVANT, AS WE CAN AUTHORIZE ANY 3RD PARTY ON OUR END TO HANDLE THIS FOR US.

After several ping pong games over the phone I put the registered owner on the phone with Jeff M. Jeff M. gave the usual attitude and runaround and told us to go back to the dealer. I went back to the dealer with 2 (TWO) TSB printouts with detailed instructions how to fix transmission shudder. Of course service advisor did not want to address it, told me it's between me and American Honda.

In January 2019, I wrote several pages summarizing Honda's multiple defects and flaws from day one and what all responsible parties including CEO/executives, engineers, parts suppliers, production, quality control put us through with their sub-standard defective garbage. How we feel about all of them and the excrement they produced. Explained in great detail how HONDA'S PROBLEMS ARE NOT CUSTOMERS' PROBLEMS. Included copies of 2 TSBs for transmission shudder. Mailed certified to Torrance and cc-ed to Tokyo. Contacted Honda on American and Japanese social media sites. Never heard from either location. When I called Torrance to check if they received my letter, the Honda rep told me didn't receive anything.

I checked social media sites. Turns out it's a common problem in Honda vehicles. There is a class action law suit but my VIN/year didn't make it into the suit. I never received TSB notifications from American Honda. I made several requests to initiate a new class action suit on classaction.org but my requests were denied. Because it's not a moneymaker case for lawyers. Because in my case Honda's defect has not resulted in serious injury or deaths (preferably multiple deaths - I don't know what lawyers have in mind - tens, thousands, millions of deaths - but the more the better for lawyers $$$$). I haven't been able to initiate an individual law suit against American Honda due to health problems.

Meanwhile the transmission shudder has not resolved itself. American Honda is not interested in fixing their problems and their local representative dealer does not care either. I will not buy another Honda ever again. I will persuade others not to buy anything Honda branded. This disgusting corporation gets away with anything, makes their problems our problems. I would still like to pursue this in court.

CR-V LX 4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 38,400 miles

I took it to the dealer and finally convinced them to "flash the computer" with the latest code which was supposed to have a patch for this shuddering between 2nd and 3rd on light acceleration. It was a temporary fix. A few thousand miles after warranty expired it began again. I will likely never purchase a Honda again.

A side note - Since the "flash" I get better mileage when out of "Economy" mode than when the "Economy" button is pushed.
