loss of steering due to rodents chewing soy based wiring
Parked my 2015 Honda CR-V at work and came back out to leave and I couldn't turn to leave the yard. I noticed my steering wheel light and exclamation point were on. I immediately called Honda told them this light was on and I had no power steering. The funny thing was my car was fine when I parked it there earlier. Honda told me that they have been having problems with rodents chewing the electronic power steering wires because they are wrapped in a soy based material which rodents love. Sure enough I remember seeing a squirrel near my car that day. Right away I asked if this was a recall or at the very least covered by my warranty and was told no because a rodent had chewed it and was considered negligence. After the repair was done it cost me $431.00 to have a new wiring harness and they wrapped it in rodent resistant tape covered with pepper spray. Definitely think this should be a recall for safety reasons and Honda needs to find another type of insulation to wrap the wiring harness. Shouldn't have to worry about losing my steering every time I park my vehicle outside. I saved the damaged wires and receipt in case I can convince them that it needs to be a recall

This incident in October was the 2nd time my wife got in the car, started it, and there was no power steering. 1st time was in March, 2017. Called the dealership, told them the problem, they sent out a tow truck and took it into their shop. When I went to pick it up, they showed me pictures of the damaged wiring and said it was rodent damage. Charged me $250.62. Nothing covered under warranty, of course. On the most recent occasion, I did pull it up on ramps so I could check this out myself. Was really surprised to see their idea of a repair was black electrical tape holding the wires together!!! I did have to remove the splash guard to see this "repair"!!! I did take pictures, went to the dealership and asked them if they thought this repair was sufficient and they readily said that it was unacceptable. I was also asked to drive the car the 6+ miles to the dealership with no power steering. Needless to say, that didn't happen. I did call Honda Roadside Assistance. Vehicle wiring was repaired correctly this time BUT, the tech forgot to reinstall the splash guard that was in the rear of the car. (Yes, I told them it was there) Had to take it back to have that done.
Happened upon info about soy coating on wiring really attracts rodents.......thinking that has everything to do with this problem. If Honda is aware that this is a problem, why, when the vehicle was in their dealership, did they not do something about it???
