I was backing out of a parking space, let go of the shift button - and it popped out. I was stuck blocking the parking lot lane. I could not pull back into space, I could not continue backing due to other cars, I could not shift. I wasn’t sure if I could shut off the car in reverse. I had to firmly hold my foot on brake and attempt to search for shift button. I found a spring on the floor with my hand, but was unable to find the button. I had to contort and look to the left of my legs and continue reaching around on the floor all while holding my foot firmly on the brake. I attempted to hold the spring in with a pen and shift the car-no luck.

I finally found the button in the arm rest tray. I carefully placed the spring inside and the button over it. I was able to get out of the middle of the parking lot. I immediately drove to Honda dealer to get it fixed. He said, no chard it’s a recall. I had checked for recalls on June 6, just 2.5 months before incident. Very unnerving situation. I’m glad I was not backing out a busy street. Having this happen in a popular parking lot made me quite nervous.

Shift knob on the gear selector snapped. There's a spring inside of it that also came out. You have to manually stick it back in for shifting to parking. Dealer is aware of the issue. Advisor told me that there's been many car similar to mine with the same problem.

As I left for work this morning, the button on the shifter lever fell out. It is plastic and clearly broken off. Fortunately, I did not lose the spring and I found a rubber band to hold the button in place. I have an appointment to get it fixed, but it better not be expensive! The vehicle is only 16 months old and has not been subjected to extreme cold. With only 13,540 miles on it, it is quite surprising for a part like this to break.

Update from Mar 14, 2019: Surprise! Quickly serviced, no charge. However, I was informed that this was a common problem for a while. The dealers have plenty of replacements on hand, and there has been some kind of parts upgrade to prevent frequent re-occurrence.

This is the first time in 54 years that I have ever seen or heard of a shifter button breaking. It is a cheap piece of plastic that broke. Not so hard to believe in our throw away society. Anyhow, since I have an extended warranty, this will cover the problem. Anyone under 35,000 miles, get the dealer to fix it, since it is under your warranty.

I love the vehicle, but I had to replace a battery that was only a year old, just a couple of months ago. I requested that Honda put in a better battery, since this was under the 35,000 mi warranty, that did not cost me a dime for the replacement. The first battery only had 400 cold cranks. The new battery has 500 cold cranks. Also want to bring to the table of a 2017 CRV recall on software update with A/C control unit replacement. Just got this recall in the mail on 12/28/18.

Will get both the problems fixed at the same time. Happy New Year!

CAR IS 2 YEARS OLD AND THE SHIFT BUTTON BROKE. WHEN TRYING TO USE IT BY HOLDING THE BUTTON IN, THE REST OF THE PLASTIC BROKE APART.

DEALER SAYS IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE THE 2 YEAR OLD CAR HAS MORE THAN 36,000 MILES. THE SHIFT BUTTON HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH MILEAGE!

I NOTICED SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IN VARIOUS ON LINE VIDEOS. SERVICE TECH AT THE DEALER SAID THAT MINE IS NOT THE FIRST CRV WITH THIS ISSUE , BUT THERE IS NO RECALL OR SERVICE ADVISORY.

AMERICAN HONDA WILL NOT FIX THE BUTTON WITHOUT A DEALER ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS A BROKEN SHIFT BUTTON!!!!!! AN OBVIOUS PART DEFECT AS EVIDENCED BY OTHER OWNER POSTINGS ONLINE.

AS AN OWNER OF 2 RECENT CRV'S, HONDA HAS JUST LOST A CUSTOMER. I WOULD NOT EVER PURCHASE ANOTHER HONDA PRODUCT. ANY COMPANY THAT DOES NOT STAND BEHIND ITS KNOWN DEFECTS IS NOT A COMPANY THAT I CAN TRUST ANYMORE.

Turned the key, pressed shift button to drive, released and plastic part and springs flew out. Did not know what happened until I examined the pieces. There is a hole on the side of shift lever. Can not put car on park or reverse. Was parked so that I could drive forward. I drove 10 miles to Honda place in San Benito, TX. The person that came out to help told me that I was the 3rd person in a week with this problem. That is scary because this problem can leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere. I was lucky I could drive to Honda. Honda keeps cutting corners to save money and put the burden on the costumer. Last Honda I had, the air bags were a problem.

This button on the shift stick is made of CHEAP plastic. This button is used many times during the day as we drive and it should not break.

Just like the air bags, Honda could have used a better metal instead of cheap plastic for a few more dollars. According to other complaints about the shift button, it gives out at about 14,000 miles. Mine has 12,027 miles.

We should carry an extra shift button and Honda should teach us how to replace it, so that we do not run the risk of being stranded. Come on Honda live up to the great reputation you claim to have. Cutting corners does not give good ratings. Hope you make a recall to replace this shift button with a better material. I do not feel SAFE anymore.
