Car lost gas power on the highway and quickly decelerated

Others have reported this problem. I was driving at highway speed when suddenly the engine light went on and I lost gas power. The car quickly decelerated to about 40 mph and reverted to battery power. Luckily I was at an exit, got off, parked, and restarted the car. It seemed fine after a restart, but the situation could have been much worse in different circumstances since electric has extremely limited range, and driving 40 when others are going 70 is a recipe for an accident. It's been a great car for 120,000 miles, but this has us worried.
