When the car was a year old I had to replace the gas cap because the engine light kept coming on. I was told it was worn. About another year (or 2-3) I had to replace it again and again one more time after that. The light continues to come on and when I had an engine check done at Pep Boys they told me it could be the computer codes. Hearing that, I have done nothing. I have since found a local mechanic and he checked it again to see why the light was coming on and suggested it might be the oxygen sensor (after seeing it mentioned on-line). He told he has to order a part for that so we're holding off on it since it's only a problem when you need to get an inspection. I have had a 1975 Toyota Celica (bought used) and a 1988 Chevy Corsica and NEVER had the problems I have had with this car. I am extremely disappointed with Honda. My friend has a 2000 Civic and has had none of the problems I have had. Looks like those of us who bought the 2001 model got lemons!
