The uninteded acceleration seemed to start happening when I was driving downhill. I could immediately feel it accelerating, but didn't realize it was driving on its own until I came to a flat stretch of road. I traveled almost all the way down the road without pressing the gas pedal at all, even over two sets of train tracks. When I finally found a suitable place to stop, I could barely get it stopped (thank God I just had my rear brakes replaced a couple of months ago). When I switched it to park, it began accelerating furiously and I was forced to just turn it off. Every time I'd try to start the car afterwards, it would just keep accelerating furiously until I turned it off again.
I called my Dad and he got to me shortly. When he arrived, he turned the car on again and tapped the gas pedal a few times. It revved up again, but then actually decelerated. He said that maybe a cable or wire was stuck, and pumping the gas seemed to lodge it back into place. He was able to drive it home, and this morning I drove to work without problems.
I'm still concerned, though, even if this happened to be an isolated incident. Has anyone else experienced this with their Civic? I love, love, LOVE my car and really don't have any complaints otherwise, and I really don't want to get rid of it before I have to. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Like others who have reported this issue, we've heard it from other mechanics and the body shop mechanics who had a Honda civic in for repairs as early as last week. Well
it caused and accident, my mothers car on her way home from work....suddenly accelerated uncontrollably to rpm's sufficient for passing on the highway...this occurred
on a city street however and rear ended a pickup with a high tailgate which destroyed the hood and most likely the radiator. Didn't quite reach the back tires of the vehicle in front.
It even occurred to me once and I had to kick the accelerator out of its acceleration by giving it more acceleration, kinda like the previous high idle vs low idle settings on my Isuzu pickup (carburetor) which I had to tap the accelerator to bring it to lower idle when warming it up....this has since been resolved. But yes its a serious issue HONDA REALLY NEEDS TO TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THIS PROBLEM EVEN IF FATALITIES DON'T REACH A CERTAIN STATISTIC. The vehicle in front was a daughter with whom appeared to be her elderly parents.

So when this incident happened i was turning right onto a four lane road (when this happened it started on a hill going downward 5 days after i got my license) the car accelerated to 75 in a 40 with highway patrol going the other direction and the officer did not believe that it was not my doing. Lets just say that I'm still in school and i work full time as well, but i can't afford all the things that are going wrong on this vehicle or what it is causing me.
