While I was driving, my steering locked at 45-50 mph, and I was unable to negotiate a curve. My car ran off the road to the right bumping along a ditch before coming to a stop. Thankfully, passersby quickly stopped. I left my lights on (plus the emergency lights) so that other drivers would have no trouble seeing what had happened. My car was off the road, but the cars of the good Samaritans weren't.
I went into accident mode; I don't call myself "crash-pilot" for nothing: I "rolled" down my window (automatic), turned the engine off, pulled out my purse, and waited for help. Within minutes, two passersby pulled me out of the driver's window. One drove me home (about a mile or two) where I called the tow truck. After about 1-1/2 hours, I met him at the sight. After he pulled my Honda a little way out of the ditch, he asked me to get in to steer it to the back of his truck. I told him that I'd try, but the steering was locked. To my surprise, the steering wheel was no longer locked.
I loved my little Honda, but that is the last one I ever buy. It is really terrifying to loose control of your car! I just thank God that no one else was involved in the accident, and I am still alive. The only thing that is really suffering is my pocket book. I was planning to keep the Honda for 2-3 more years (until I retire).
I was bunged up, but my car was destroyed. Someone who wanted to salvage what he could paid me $250 for it. That included a brand new battery and alternator.
I plan to report and complain to the appropriate people. I really think they owe me a "new" car.
