The cable release for the fuel door in my 2002 Honda Civic EX stopped working (naturally my gas gauge was on Empty when it happened). A mechanic friend of mine looked at it and after removing the cap from the release end of the cable (found inside the trunk, behind the carpeted paneling) he deduced that the cable didn't actually snap, but may have just been stretched causing it to cease working. (When we tested it by pressing the release without the cap on the mechanism worked fine, but ceased working when we placed the cap back on it). I'm working on getting a replacement installed now.

Went to fill up my tank with gas, and was unable to open the cover to the gas tank. I have pulled back the trunk lining, and can see the mechanism, but have no idea how to remove it. After researching this online, I can see this is a common problem with Honda vehicles and am pissed that I will probably have to pay to have this fixed when it sounds like it a faulty design.

Drove into a gas station tried to fill up but the latch wouldn't open. So I tried to tap it, tried to use objects to ply it open without damaging the paint but none of that worked. Then another driver there suggested to open the interior of the trunk and play with the wiring. Eventually we found the wire tha opened the latch. I was lucky because my gas was running really low and I didn't even know if I could even drive it to the dealership without running out!
It cost $200 to replace the wiring, just like the other commentators described.
