Civic LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 88,000 miles

I'm not a car buff, so I don't know what the problem is except for what the dealer told me. In 2004 I purchased a used 2002 Honda LX with 57000 miles on it. In 2010 while driving city streets at normal speed, the steering wheel would seize up. I couldn't turn the wheel or accelerate. I would have to pull over, turn off the engine and wait 15 minutes. When I started the car, it worked fine. The engine light didn't come on at all during this time. Now in 2014 the engine light comes on. I thought the car was overheated b/c it sat in a south facing parking lot of my workplace for 8 hours a day. This type of event kept happening every time I drove it. I stopped driving it and the Honda sat for 2 years in my garage. A shade tree mechanic got it running in 2013 but the problems didn't happen when he test drove the car. I did replace the battery on his recommendation. Dealer recommends replacing timing belt, water pump and drive belts. Total: $5,000. The cost is prohibitive, which is why I put off bringing it to the shop. If I do the repairs piecemeal, how much should it cost approximately? Thanks for any feedback.
