Civic EX 2.0L

  • CVT transmission
  • 122,000 miles

Got this car for my job because I drive for a living, really never thought I would have a serious issue considering Hondas reputation, but I’ve been wrong before and man o man have a I made a mistake getting this car! I purchased in September of 2022 and it’s been a headache since, so far I’ve done cv axles due to a shimmy, have had to have new brakes done on the rear and still have issues with the electronic parking brake light coming on, have had to replace the wheels because one was bent, the ac has never worked, the paint is peeling, there are numerous small dents on the car because it’s made of cheap sheet metal, the interior is cheaply made, the touchscreen freezes and crashes, the gas mileage is sub par at best, the CVT is absolutely horrific, the handling is a complete joke, the brakes still suck after being replaced due to the terrible lockdown feeling of the CVT, and the car still has vibrations on the highway after 11 wheel balances and 5 road force balances.

Unfortunately even after always performing oil changes on time and usually before they were due (generally I changed oil at 40%) and also performing CVT fluid changes, I have noticed a grinding like sound under acceleration only between 15-1800 rpm and only when the engine is fully warmed up and only in gear, after having the valves adjusted and replacing belt tensioner and belt TWICE!! I finally gave in and took it to Honda, the first time they looked at it they said it was the tensioner…. Agreeing that maybe I just got a bad tensioner I had them replace it with a new belt, 430.00 and one rip off later, of course the issue was still there. They agreed to look at it free of charge and had the car for a few days diagnosing the mystery problem.

As of today they called me and told me the unfortunate news that at 122,000 miles I need a timing chain, new timing chain guides a intake cam gear and a new timing chain tensioner, I cannot describe the level of frustration I have felt and the level of disappointment, I have had older Hondas and they never had any issues like this and they had three times the amount of miles on them. No matter what anyone says, yes I’m talking about you Honda Fanboys, these cars are junk, overrated, cheaply made, imported crap. I will never have another Honda ever again, this is what I get for always staying up to date on my maintenance. Sadly I have to fix it and dump more money in this turd because I still owe a little bit on it unfortunately. Rest assured once I can get out of it I’m taking my happy ass to Toyota.

Engine makes a grinding noise on warm start up. Car needs to sit for one hour after driving any significant distance. I've had it happen after driving only 5 miles. When I start it up it makes a loud, embarrassing and troubling whirring/grinding noise for about 3/4 of a second. Honda says they're "looking into it" after I took it to a dealer and they replicated the problem. I found forums of people complaining about this problem from early 2016. I'm fairly certain they know what it is and refuse to acknowledge it. As of 3/8/17 it's still happening. Honda has known about this for at least a year and 3 months now.

I called Honda Customer Service to complain about it, to ask questions about how long they've been "looking into it" and they refused to tell me anything. I consider the car a lemon, and don't entirely trust it to last. Just look up Honda 2016 engine grinding noise and you'll get a lot of anecdotes, videos etc of the same exact problem.

What is wrong with the engine? Just issue a recall and fix it already.

grinding engine sound (hush noise while running)

The car was built Nov. 2016 and I was waiting for about one and half months before I can touch the car. I drove the car for a week until I recognise a grinding engine sound, at first I tried to ignore the noise, maybe its just the air-conditioning making a thin noise but it become obvious every time I accelerate the car. Now the sound is getting bad, I open the hood and find out where the sound from but its all over the engine noise.

Its very annoying for a week old car that have this noise issue like a 10 years old 350,000km on the clock old car.

I realised that Im not the only owner having this issue for their new Honda Civic 2016.

I hope Honda will find a solution for this issue because it happen all over the world and it kills Hondas reputation in the market.
