problem #1

Jul 012005

Element LX 4 cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 5,000 miles

This problem started almost as soon as I bought the car - began to experience a terrible grinding sound in the rear brakes. Dealer disassembled brakes and removed corrosion from the rotors and calipers. Repair lasted about 2 weeks and sound returned. Dealer inspected and replaced rotors. Repair lasted about 6 months. Took to different Dealer. They replaced the rotors and pads (now about 20,000 miles). Repair lasted about 750 miles. Decided to live with the sound, which was similar to the sound of a 747 jet landing without wheels on a gravel runway. Finally at 45,000, the rear left caliper literally exploded, causing my wheel to lockup completely. Took to a non-dealer who replace the fully corroded rear calipers with stainless steel calipers and ceramic pads. Problem has remained fixed now for about 2500 miles.
