i bought the odyssey new in 2002. after a couple times and some arguing the dealer replaced the transmission and oil cooler at 40000 miles. after 25000 on new transmission i started draining the trans fluid (3 1/2 quarts) at the same time i would change engine oil. i would do this for three consecutive engine oil changes.(changed engine oil every 3000 miles) then i would start routine over at 50000,75000,100000 miles.while driving the trans would start shifting harder in forward gears and even harder in reverse. the d light started flashing, the tcs & check engine light came on. i checked the codes and got the p0780 code at 110000 miles on new transmission. i added a can of sea foam trans clean, drove van about 30 minutes and done a 14 quart transmission flush. took van out drove van hard,no problems. the third time my wife went down the road the d started flashing, tcs & check engine light came on. she stopped and when she put in reverse to turn around it slammed pretty hard. i ran codes & got the p0780 again. this tranny has never slipped just periodic harsh shifting. it seems like it acts up more when driving really easy.(when she drives)

2002 Honda Odyssey,
great mini van but dont buy! This Honda model seems plagued with transmission failures,
that are unacceptable for any car manufacture. The Transmission is starting to show all the signs of failure that have been mentioned. The other day D was flashing check engine light came on. The car misshifts when going or coming out of turns.
It is intermittent but is getting more common. This van is like new and has had all services done by Dealership. The transfluid was changed at about 60k .
I have not contacted Honda or any Dealership since I fix my own cars. I'm looking forward to a class action lawsuit against Honda for not replacing transmissions in these vans. The failure rates are way to high for such a quality brand. I will be driving this van until complete failure occurs and reading all the posts this seems highly probable. I will probably repair it myself.Good luck to all 2002 Odyssey owners, we got screwed!!
Don't buy these vans !!

The Date of failure may not be exact I am guessing, but when the Transmission failed we went to Honda for some support in Clinton NJ, they wanted 4000.00 for repair no concessions were made, My wife was the driver of this car and she has never had a ticket in her life, she is very careful , she does not drive aggressively.
Their was a campaign made by Honda to recall the transmission during the first year of ownership early 2004. They said manufacturing issue was corrected and nothing more needed to be done. Well than just as warranty ran out 82,000 miles the transmission failed. Well we repair with a local guy for about 2600 dollars. Well Today the Trans failed again I know Honda Odysessy does not have Trans problems, At least that is what the Say!! It must be Just me. I am sure it will cost me another 3000 to fix.
Can I say Honda You did not support Your product and are not very loyal to your customers'. You were horrible to me.
I am sure you could not care less about what I have to say with regards to your company, Honda is a corporation with a culture that does not have any pride .
The real problem is my fault I was a nice guy to them even when they would not support their product. Now after the second Failure on 2/22/2014 I am disappointed I did not make a serious complaint sooner maybe it would have struck a nerve and they might have supported other customers.
Please pass this on to Honda maybe they will help and assist their future customers, As for me I guess you can say I am toast.
