2005 Honda Ody. Noise with power steering pump problem 1st occurred around 40000 miles. Put up with this for a few weeks and it went away. The middle of 2011 I got a recall on the power steering pump called the local dealership (Townsend Honda, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and they said they had to hear the noise, so we went to Birmingham about 60 miles away: groaned all the way there and most of the way back. Went by dealership, noise had quieted down so he told me he could not do anything. I asked him if I could bring it to the dealer and leave it. Kept it 3 days and said they changed the power steering pump under the recall Jan 2012. I looked under hood and I could not see where they had changed the pump (usually working on power steering pump there will be some sign of oil or where they had wiped it off the lines - NO SIGN. Not making as much noise so I let it ride. My wife drives this veh. and I don't hear very well. This is Dec 2012 and I drove the veh. today and I heard the noise loud & clear. I contacted the dealership - to let them know about noise problem - I did not expect them to offer to fix it. They said if I had purchased the rebuilt power steering pump, it would have been under warranty for 3yrs. or 36000 miles. I told him I would not be purchasing the power steering pump or any other parts from them and that I would never own another Honda Vehicle.

Since I bought this 2005 Odyssey it seems like I'm always pouring money into it. If it's not to replace the run-flats every year, which costs about $1200, something else pops up. This time its the steering wheel. It has started making a very loud whirling noise when I turn the wheel. Now the noise is almost a constant and I don't have the money to take it in to the dealership for repairs. I checked the recalls on this and didn't see one. However I did see a lot of complaints about it. It should be on the recall list from Honda.

Sometimes loud humming noise when turning at low speed like in parking lot. Brought it in to the shop several times for checkup, but they could not duplicate the problem and therefore no correction attempted. Read several complaints and they mostly implying the power steering pump needs replacement. Is it or is it not?

We are the second owners of this Honda Odyssey. The previous owners complained about a whining sound coming from the front steering at 20k miles then again at 65k miles. We purchased the car with 67k miles and have been experiencing a very loud whining sound from the steering after driving it for about 30 min or so. The sound worsens at slow speeds and slight turns such as into a driveway. We do not notice a problem on the freeway. After a period of sitting with the car turned off the sound does not return. It is intermittent but when it occurs pedestrians turn to look our direction. The dealership is unable to replicate the problem but I am told to keep bringing it back as it is most likely the power steering pump and it will eventually go out. I was also told that when the original owner began complaining they just are not accustomed to replacing a steering pump so did not.
Update from Oct 19, 2011: Honda sent a recall letter in August so we brought the car in and they replaced the power steering pump for free. We just brought the car I again this afternoon because the car makes a whining sound and the steering wheel is a bit jerky when I turn the wheels both left and right.
Update from Oct 25, 2011: Hi. I heard a whine from the steering again so took it back to the dealership. They replaced the steering pump again and said that I am the only one they knew of who experienced problems with the new pump. That is good. All is well now!

Noise coming from power steering. Poorly designed PS reservoir. Needs replacement. DIY, change PS fluid also.

When cold out whine / grinding sound from engine or steering. Took car into Honda on Richmond (Toronto) in 2008 - said could not find a problem. In February 2011 noise became worse. Took car into Sisley Honda (Thornhill, Ontario). Dealer could not replicate problem. We notice the problem when ever it is cold out.

My significant question is...how can debris get into a pump reservoir? My Honda Odyssey 2005 had just been oil changed a few days before the problem happened. I never had any problem of this sort until after the oil change. I would like Honda to explain how and why debris can get into a reservoir. If Honda Odyssey owners have such problem, Honda must recall and I want my money back!!!!!

Trying to figure out if Honda will cover the fixing of this issue since so many Honda's have had this problem...

We are very disappointed with the Honda Odyssey and will never buy another. The first power steering pump was replaced with only 48,000 miles on it. Just had another put in at 122,000 miles. The first time I refused to pay for the work so Carbone Honda of New Hartford settled with me and I paid just for the Labor which ended up being $145.73. I had it replaced again two weeks ago but it has 122.000 miles on the van. Once again I refused to pay. The parts manager agreed to call the Honda rep for the northeast and the result of the conversation was that the first time I shouldn't have paid anything so Carbone sent me a check for $100.50 but they did nothing for the second replacement because of the mileage. So much for buying a quality vehicle. I asked them how much I would get for a trade in for this piece of junk.

THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I THINK THE DEALER SHOULD HAVE RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM "POWER STEERING RACK & PINION". IS THERE ANY THING OR ANY ONE HAD THEIR ODYSSEY REPAIRED BY THE DEALER AT NO COST. ANY INFORMATION WILL BE HELPFUL, THANKS.
Update from Mar 4, 2011: I had taking the car to the dealer if they would pay for it. its out of warranty and it will cost $1500.00. the service represntative made a call "to no idea who" and it will cost me $550.00-$600.00.
the dealer is going half on it, I said half of $1500 is $750.00, where did you come up with $550.00.
when the dealer cover for repairs so do the price change. the price changed from $1500.00 to $1100.00. are these dealers a rep-off. why don't they charge us the same price even when its not cover under warranty.

I just stumbled across this list of complaints. We bought the Odyssey new in 2005, the whine started shortly thereafter but was intermittent, happened mostly when it was cold. Now it's constant. Van has ALWAYS been serviced by dealer, just saw there was a technical bulletin on this, but ours still has the original cap on the power steering reservoir. I was considering replacing the pump!?!?!??!? C'mon, Honda!!

Ok. Called American Honda and explained problem back in November. They told me take to dealership and they would look at it at case to case basis. Dealership needed to hear the problem but on the days I would try to take it in, the temp would be so cold that it would not do it. After going in for recall work they told me that pump, reservoir and hoses need replaced. 600.00 repair. Called American Honda back and now waiting on representative to call me back. I would have never complained if sooooo many people had not had the same problem. There is also a TSB bulletin on ALL 2005 Odyssey's. I have been a Honda owner for 8 years. Had an Accord with 275000 miles. Wife flipped into creek and it saved her life. The only thing it eber needed was tires, brakes, oil. I bought the Odyssey with 86000miles because I did not fear the brand or quality. I am starting to have some doubts. If there is not a logical and fair compromise with Honda I will be going to Toyota.

Every morning when we start our 2005 Odyssey (EXL-NAV/RES) we get the grinding sound in the engine from the defective power steering pump. I took it to the dealer and they told me it would cost nearly $700 to fix. I bought this van because of Honda's reliability reputation but have had to put about $5,000 of repairs into it since the warranty ended. That doesn't include the transmission that feels like is going bad because of the shuttering on the highway. I'm just trying to ignore that because I can't afford, nor do I want to dump anymore money into this piece of garbage car!

Just like the others I have a power steering pump that whines and hums when I even begin to try to turn the steering wheel. It started without any noise at first. It was just a difficult steering effort at low speeds, but within a few months I could hear loud whines and buzzing while driving esp when turning...
Glad I found this site and the service bulletin 07-005. Will see if I can get the dealer to fix under good will. Honestly this should be a recall.

I BEEN DRIVING THIS CAR FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS NOW AND THE POWER STEERING ALWAYS GAVE ME PROBLEMS BUT I NEVER NOTICE IT UNTIL THE WARRANTY OF THE CAR WAS OVER

well two year ago i was in a head on collision car accident, i owned a 2002 oldsmobile silouette. i survived the crash with no injuries but i decided to get another van because that one held up so well. I bought my 2005 odyssey at carmax about a year and a half ago maybe a little longer. My Odyssey came with 55,000 miles. Ive had to do alot of traveling wich is why my mileage has went up so far.
I noticed a slight noise a few days ago and got all my stuff replaced; the steering fluid, resevoir, pump and hoses. Believe it or not my van is used but is buetiful and it has not yet otherwise gave me trouble. Our honda dealership fixed it immediatly, it was so so easy. I have to say if you take care of your van and clean everything out under the hood say every few months just to be safe and respectful to your odyssey it will never give you any trouble. This van is truely amazeing, you just have to take care of it well and dont run it into the ground. Also never let small car shops other then high end garages such as dealerships etc.. to work on your van because most of them dont know what there doing when fixing the higher class featers in the engines, the most of the time will tear it up and not tell you about it.This hapened to my friend not to long ago, but he never had problems before. Respect your honda, And it will never let you down

At 40,000 miles, our 2005 odyssey van started making a load whining noise so took it to a local dealer who said the power steering pump was failing and that the rear wheel bearings were shot. They were replaced no charge, even though it was few thousand miles out of warranty. Awesome service!
However, the noise came back this year at about 78,000 miles, and got progressively worse, and then the stearing at low parking lot speeds got tough. I took it to our new dealer who said that the stearing rack and pinion was leaking and thus the lower level in the power stearing fluid probably caused the pump to whine again. They lifted the van and showed me where the leak was, and the area around it was saturated.
The cost to fix this...replace the rack and pinion and pump and labor, is going to be around $1800!!!! Of course we have no extended warranty as when I bought it, it was a Honda so everyone said they are so reliable, no need for that. I have to have it fixed as my wife depends on the vehicle to take kids to various functions. I am pissed off about this as Honda's were supposed to be the most reliable vehicles! I should have saved money and bought a Dodge van or something. I don't expect to have these kinds of repairs at 79,000 miles! Mabye after 120,000 or so, but not this mileage. I showed the dealer a print out of an earlier post had regarding a Honda service bulletin on power stearing pumps, but the dealer said that since the repair was for a leaking rack and pinion there was nothing they could do.
I am going to contact Honda USA and try to get reimbursed for at least the parts, as I think this is lousy quality. We will see how it goes. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yep, like others have said, it's cold outside (about 38 degrees) and the power steering whines like an old cow. I'm planning to go flush the reservoir per others' suggestion. Just got the car last week used from someone. Between this and the transmission/torque converter issue, I'm disappointed (though there are lots of things I do like about it).
- Kent S., Lilburn, Ga, US
Same problem as everybody else is describing here. Dealer replaced reservoir and flushed power steering fluid and problem went away for quite a while. Since this was under warranty I didn't worry about it much at the time.

While at low speeds the steering make a buzzing noise and you can feel the vibration at the brake pedal.
