About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
While driving down the road and once the engine reaches operating temperature the vehicle fails to accelerate and shift gears. I mash the gas pedal and the RPM gauge goes up but the vehicle doesn't move. I let the engine and transmission cool down and sometimes it will operate properly again until everything warms up. It doesn't matter if im sitting at a light or in actual motion going down the road, the vehicle ceases to continue moving. I have been going 60 mph and all of a sudden my car loses all movement but the car is still reving up and I can change gears but it stops me dead in my tracks. I called the transmission shop and they tell me its a very common issue but nothing has been able to be pinpointed

I drove my Honda minivan for 10 years and one day I was pulling into a parking space at work and when I stepped on the brake to slow down the car, it suddenly accelerated so fast that it hit the wall and set off the air bag. The car was totaled and I had burns from the the airbag on my neck and arm.

While stopped in traffic, engine began hard acceleration and front tires began screeching. This occurred 4X within 10 days. With each experience there was no warning. It was fortunate that foot was on brake pedal at that time.

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. While driving at 40 mph, the vehicle jerked and the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the front brakes. In addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate and the rpms increased. The vsc and ABS warning lights illuminated on the instrument cluster. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the front brakes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 156,400.

I wan on vacation 500 miles away from home. Driving the 2006 Honda Odyssey as normal on the highway. All of a sudden the engine started over-revving and the van slowed down. I pulled over safely. The van would not move in drive although the engine was fine. It had to be towed 100 miles to a transmission shop where we discovered the transmission had to be replaced at great cost.

Experiencing vibration in vehicle during acceleration between 40-60 mph. Took the van to mechanic and was informed that two motors mounts are bad and need replacing. These are not wear and tear items and should not need replacing. This appears to be a problem with Honda Odyssey vans and this problem is not being covered by warranty since the failure occurs around 100K to 150K miles.

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. When the contact attempted to accelerate, she noticed that the vehicle suddenly began to surge forward. She tried to apply the brakes but they did not engage and she crashed into the vehicle that was in front of her. There were no injuries but a police report was filed. The vehicle had not been inspected at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 57,000.

When the vehicle is started up, there is a sudden period of unwarranted acceleration (less than a second). It feels like the accelerator input is misread and re-calibrated and then the problem does not come back. I have noticed this problem more often in cooler weather than otherwise.

Unexplained acceleration.
- Oklahoma City, OK, USA
: the contact stated while driving 70 mph and attempting to apply brake pressure the vehicle failed to slow down. The ignition was turned off to stop the vehicle. It was towed to the dealership for inspection. They determined the floor mat was jammed against the accelerator pedal. The contact disputed the dealer's conclusion that the floor mat caused the vehicle's acceleration. The vehicle was recently repaired at contact's expense, and Honda was willing to put it back on the highway, and risk injuring other motorists. Updated 5/10/2006 -
