Odyssey EX-L 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 72,000 miles

I noticed that for the last 3 oil changes that every time I drain the oil less that 2qt come out. I refill 4.5qt and after 4k miles the story repeats. Also I am checking the dip stick and confirmed that the car burns around 2qt for every 4k miles. I used the recommended 5w20 oil (Mobil1 synthetic). The car does not smoke or smell like burning oil and no leaks anywhere. However consistently the oil disappears is higher that unusual rate comparing to all other cars I had. I also replaced the spark plugs and still see the same high oil consumption. Have not found a fix yet and just be mindful to check regularly my oil levels and add oil if necessary. This is not a 2 stroke engine and oil should not be burnt at this rate. Not environmental friendly as well.

We bought the car as a previously owned from a dealer in September 2015. Problems started arising in 2016. We have had excessive oil burning the entire ownership. Every 500-800 miles we have to add oil. Finally the engine just died. Left us stranded on the road during a road trip. We had replaced coils, plugs, you name it. After much research we found there was a lawsuit pertaining to such problems around 2013. What can we do to get a new engine? We are an active family and need this car. Please let me know what to do next. Thank you.

2 wks ago 1/7/18 we noticed a ticking noise that my husband said sounded like it was coming from the engine..he checked the oil and there was none there..it was not time for a routine oil change and we get them done reg. at a nissian dealership..he put 2 qts of oil and lucas additive to see if the noise would quiet down..however it did not and has started to get louder..he then went to a mechanic friend who used a stethoscope and said that it was coming from the engine for sure..we called the dealership who we got the van from and they said to bring it in because they didn't understand why there wasn't any oil in it..they said that they did some research and show that Honda settled a lawsuit about fast oil consumption and engine failure..my local Honda dealership said that there is nothing they can do because the extended warranty went out 9/17 and it would need to have a CEL..I asked them if they would be able to start a complaint with American Honda but they said that since I'm not a customer of their dealership that it would be out of their control..it sounds terrible at idle and when you are going through 1st and 2nd gear..I'm afraid that it's not safe to drive with my kids in the car and will stall out anywhere..I don't know what to do because a new engine will cost thousands of dollars and I'm afraid that the van is only worth like $6-7000 but we owe like $12900 still

(Short Story)CLASS ACTION Lawsuit and SETTLEMENT!!! IF your V6 ENGINE is BURNING oil with no leak- be advised it may be going into the cylinder due to a manufacturer defect in the engine- piston O rings!!!!! They have extended engine coverage for 8yrs and unlimited miles!!! Be advised especially if you are thinking of purchasing any of the years effected by this (2009-2013 Odyssey) Many other different year Honda V6 vehicles are also having this issue- crosstour, accords....Buyer beware

(Long story) On a long road trip my engine light comes on and upon inspection there is no oil in my engine. I put 4-5 quarts of oil into the engine and take it to dealership upon arrival to home area. They make my wife sit for hours despite an appointment. They change the oil and say nothing to her about piston "O" ring problem with these engines as well as the extended 8 yr/unlimited mile warranty. The technician writes on the back page to come back in "1K miles for re inspection" and never tells my wife anything. The engine oil gets changed a couple months later (August) by my mechanic all the while I am adding oil as needed to the engine. There is no oil leak anywhere visible. A month later my engine light comes on and the engine begins misfiring. I take it to the mechanic -full tune up and timing belt cost $1300.00. Turns out a spark plug was fouled and there is evidence of oil in the cylinder and the coil needs to be changed. I am informed by a co-worker of a class action lawsuit and settlement over a manufacturers defect in the piston O ring causing oil to leak into the cylinder. This is causing oil to be consumed without a visible leak and then the spark plug to foul. I report all this to Honda USA in CA and they are fighting me because they want specific codes which for some reason their technician says there are none- despite the check engine light coming on multiple times now. The woman from Honda feels oil consumption and misfires are separate issues- Although if the faulty piston- O- ring is causing oil to leak into the cylinder therefore excessive oil consumption and then misfires from the fouled spark plug. It seems reasonable to say in this situation they go hand in hand.

I have had repeated oil changes, spark plugs changes/damaged, as well as inconvience of being at our mechanic often. In the near future, our engine will need replacing. Odyssey Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

Our engine is always so low on oil it does not register on the dip stick. In this state I add 1.5 quarts of oil. I read online that a massive amount of Honda Vehicles have this issue when our vehicle triggered a check engine code and looked up the code. I brought the vehicle to the dealer in Westminster CA and they did a check for oil consumption and had us return in 1000 miles. When we hit that mileage 3 weeks later I checked the oil in the morning before returning to the dealer and again the oil did not register on the dip stick. The dealer had the van for 4 hours and then told us it was checked and found to be 0.60 quarts low and that they considered it with normal range of oil consumption. I personally believe they lied and that the van was at least 1.25 quarts low. Have no idea what our options are now since I feel the dealer was dishonest, just keep adding 1-2 quarts every few weeks and hope the engine does not fail I guess.

excessive oil consumption

The engine light came on while driving, so I pull the code, its a P3497 which means Valve Pause System (VPS) stuck off. The VPS is the device that boosts the efficiency of the engine by strategically shutting of valves on cylinders when are not needed. Ford trucks have something like this this and its been pretty popular.

I take it to the dealer Val Strough Honda in Seaside, CA and they finally reset the codes, but I had to come back twice AND surprisingly had to explain the VCM system and VPS to the service manager. I also had to show her the service bulletin.

They tried to charge me $140 to read the codes and update it, but.... Long story short: polite argument, brought up class action lawsuit over this problem and I drove away.

Update from Jun 7, 2017: Added picture of OBDII Code.

Update from Jun 8, 2017: Honda told me I am covered by the warranty and to submit my receipt from the service department for reimbursement. Stay away from the service department at Val Strough Honda in Seaside, CA at all costs. They WILL try to rip you off. They cleared the engine light code on my Odyssey, and told me they could not duplicate the fault and would only update the VCM software "by request" and it would cost me $140 to do so. The service manager is a real scum bag, and what they do there is illegal.

The engine seized due to the excessive oil consumption. It blew a rod...and estimated for new engine was $4500.

I wrote letters to Honda...the first letter I was treated like a liar and felt like a criminal. I then asked for a letter in writing in which they said no. I wrote another letter a week letter (to the President of North America Honda) and I was told because I do not own the car any longer they can do nothing for me. This time I persisted in asking for a letter in writing telling me why they cannot assist me. The girl, named Stevie, said she would not do that. I then informed her that I would continue writing to Mr. Mikoshiba in which she replied, "that would be considered harassment"

Low oil light came on, took to Honda had had them do an oil change (life % was at 40%).

Odyssey EXL 3.5L V6

I was driving down the road, the car starts jumping, loses power, lights start flashing on the dashboard, and won't go over 20mph. I called my local Honda dealer that was 10 miles away. First they said don't drive it, but I would have been stranded so I spent the next 30 minutes barely making it up the hills to the dealer. They said it may take a while so I set up someone to pick me up. When I got home 45 minutes later I got a call saying that the car was ready and that the spark plugs just needed replaced. I thought that was weird, so I looked it up. It turns out that apparently there is a recall/issue with excessive oil usage that wears out the spark plugs and requires quite an extensive amount of work; that could not have been completed in the 45 minutes they used.

I purchased this van on 03/24/16 and there is a problem with the engine already and it seems they knew about this before selling me the vehicle, If I wanted a vehicle to cost me money that I made clear to them before buying I would have bought it on Craigslist.. This is now the second time I bought a vehicle with problems right out of the gate (Toyota -sold me a car that crashed and gave me a car-fax saying nothing happened to this car before I bought it and after a year I found out and they ignored me, after I complained)

Now why should I have to be checking my engine oil ever time I fill up at the gas station; makes no sense, a good engine should not use not even a 1/2 qrt of oil... and my van used 2 quarts and Honda can not tell me where it went from the engine: THIS MEANS THERE'S A PROBLEM... AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED** or I'm taking this van back to the dealership and they better do somethingMoney doesn't grow on trees :(..

Then they tell me that the check engine light that came on need a software update that they should have done before I bought the van, that cost me $75.00 (4 months after I bought it) Then, to think that they would use genuine Honda oil... no* they use Castrol oil

I did get a 2 yr warranty with my van, now I need to double check what it really covers and what I'm paying for ...to much trickery with these companies.. tired of been SCAMMED !!! and been the LOSER**

First mentioned this issue to the dealer 5/2015 when my oil light came on. An oil consumption test was suggested. I started the test but went over the limit !000miles, so a new oil change was recommended to start the test. I declined at the time because an oil change had been done. I mentioned the issue a second time in 11/2015 but an oil change was not due at the time. Finally with my latest oil change 3/2016 I started the oil oil consumption test. !st reading there was little oil used, 2nd test showed over a quart of oil was consumed. When I ask what the solution was thats when I was told that some Honda's were experiencing this issue. Nothing was mentioned at any other time that this problem exist . Now I'm pissed because in December I paid over $450 to change spark plugs which were prematurely worn because of this issues. What CROOKS!

Update from Jul 19, 2016: So I completed the oil consumption test and my engine is burning oil however, the dealer states that the amount of oil that my engine is burning is normal and refused to repair my car. They said I did not meet their criteria for repair however, they recommended a few months back to have my spark plugs changed. What crooks! I noticed that this has been an ongoing issues with Honda

Brought to dealer at about 30k and told them of concern of losing 1.5 quarts between oil changes. Service said as long as it's less then 1 quart per thousand miles they won't do anything. Now it's getting much worse all of a sudden up to 3 quarts burned and still have 30% left before next oil change. Honda denies any problem or extending engine warrenties! See all kinds of bad reports about the cylinder deactivation system causing this???
