Accent 4-cyl

  • 50,000 miles
My 2002 Hyundai Accent "clicks off" repeatedly when attempting to refuel the vehicle. Gasoline pools in the chamber between the fuel door and the gas tank causing a serious hazard. Fuel smells are frequently observed within the car after fueling and for a period of days afterward. The "check engine" remains illuminated indicating a fuel line system. I have had the system checked by a full service automotive facility and they have replaced several parts with no success in remedying the problem. Have suggested possibly replacing the entire full line, gas tank, etc but have indicated this is likely a manufacturer defect that should be addressed as such. At the current time it is impossible to put more than a few ounces of gasoline into the car at any one time and failure to closely monitor the chamber while attempting to refuel can lead to gasoline overflow and spills. I have significant concerns as to the safety of fueling this car on a weekly basis as well as the risk of fire hazard should any type of rear-end collision occur with this vehicle. From my research this appears to be a fairly common occurrence with this model/year of Hyundai, including at low mileage points. Concerned that Hyundai has not addressed what appears to be a serious issue for safety.

For the past 2 years I have had to replace speed sensors and oxygen sensors, several times. I was taking to my mechanic because parts were out of warranty, but my mechanic stated that it is a transmission problem because every time I had chips replaced my trans fluid was dirty and had to flush again and again. Took car to dealer, same conclusion. Hyundai refused to replace. Filed a complaint with Hyundai. Hyundai stated they were not contacted by dealer, this statement was later retracted by them. They are still refusing to replace my transmission. Did all scheduled maintenance. My car has about 77000 miles and is almost 10 years. My fuel system began acting up early 2011. Can only fill tank 1/4 gallon every 1min. This takes me a very long time to fil1 tank. Dealer gave me a $1600 repair estimate. I am reading literally 1000's of complaints on both issues and Hyundai refuses to speak on them. These are dangerous issues: Sensor chips causes cars to stall, particularly at high speeds, imagine being behind someone going 60mph and then suddenly their car stalls....crash waiting to happen and the fueling issue can increase the likelihood of car fires. If the gas is leaking or spilling out due to poor workmanship and/or design and an accident occurs ignition of gas spilling outside increases, not to mention environmental hazards. These cars could not pass emissions testing. The main issue is that Hyundai is missing in action and refuses to honor their warranties. Shame shame Hyundai. Saying you offer a 10 year warranty and actually honoring it are 2 different things.

The problem I am having is with the vehicles perg flow system. The vehicle has a charcoal canister that filters gas vapors from the gas tank. This canister has become clogged so on fill up the fumes can not vent properly and forces air back up the filler neck of the gas tank and sprays gas all over. This is not only dangerous to myself but also dangerous to every person in the area. I feel this is a danger to everyone and needs to B addressed

2002 Hyundai Accent with 90,000 miles will not accept more than a trickle of gasoline without backing up and shutting off the gas pump. This occurs due to the charcoal in the vapor canister expanding and blocking off the venting from the gas tank. Not only is the back up of fuel dangerous, but it appears to be a pollution control system problem as well.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundia Accent. When the contact adds fuel to her vehicle it comes back out and spills onto the ground. In order to avoid the fuel spilling out of her vehicle it needs to be added in short intervals. The mechanic and a technician were unable to diagnose the defect. The failure mileage was 115,000.

This is a very well known problems for the Hyundai Accent. You can check some web pages describing this problem: autoforum.classifieds1000.com/Hyundai-Accent/gas_tank_shut_off en.allexperts.com/Q/Hyundai-repair-815/2002-Hyundai-Accent-charcoal.htm as soon as I start to pump gas, sometimes it only pumps gas for a few seconds and then the handle shuts off as if the gas tank were already full. I sometimes have some success pumping gas into the tank by holding the handle to pump rather than using the pin to keep the gas pumping, hold the handle at a higher angle and kind of push the nozzle into the gas tank opening with more pressure, but even with these maneuvers it sometimes shuts off after a short time and I have to keep restarting the gas over and over again. Sometimes it shuts off every few seconds, sometimes a little longer but it is very annoying. I asked my dealer and they said it would cost about $200 just to check it out and then extra to repair the problem.

A few months ago a problem started with my pumping gas. Gas tank/car will not accept more than a few cents worth of gas before clicking off as if full. Tank is confirmed as not full when this happens. This is a constant occurrence ie every time gas is attempted to be pumped. It seems the problem is the charcoal canister. This is scary because in addition to the "click-off" it often overflows spilling/spraying gas all over me, my car and the ground. I am stressed and fear walking around with flammable liquid dried into my clothing! what if the gas got into my eyes! I wish someone could help with getting Hyundai to do a recall as this is making me nervous to the point where I will not pump gas while my children are in the car which is extremely inconvenient and is something I should not have to worry and constantly stress about. Please help because coming in contact with flammable gasoline is just terrifying and not something I want to continue doing!

The contact owns a 2002 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated that while attempting to fill the vehicle with fuel, she noticed that the vehicle exhibited an issue with the fuel being pumped in the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that the charcoal canister located in the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The contact called the manufacturer but was offered no assistance because the vehicle was outside the warranty. The current and failure mileages were approximately 55,000. Updated 10/27/10.

For at least a year now, my gas tank shut off valve seems to be defective. The tip on the fuel handle goes in but the handle shuts off after only a few seconds after starting to fill the tank. The switch off sensor inside the fuel intake valve area seems to indicate the tank is full when it is not. The trigger on the handle has to be manually squeezed and even then the problem occurs. On many occasions the gas has overfilled, spit out and spilled out and onto ground, the car, the handle and my hand as the sensor does not indicate the tank is full. This is dangerous. The Hyundai dealer service rep said to bring the car in to check and it would cost around $100. If this is a common problem, the dealer should cover this check and correct this dangerous problem.

2002 Hyundai Accent 2 dr sedan there is a dangerous problem where gas being pumped into the car is being rejected by the fuel system and spitting back out of the fuel pipe without triggering the gasoline pump shut off. The fuel has on many occasions spit back on the person filling the car with gasoline. Per the Hyundai dealer and Consumer Affairs this is a common problem yet no recall has been issued or requested. The problem is a charcoal fuel filter canister that contains a bag of charcoal that has burst whereby the charcoal pieces are blocking a valve that regulates the flow of fuel into the gas tank. The cost of the repair at the dealer is $720 plus tax. Gas will eventually be able to be put into the tank very slow if the person pumping the gas is aware of the problem, if not the gasoline sprays everywhere which is where the danger occurs. One spark and the person and vehicle will explode or burst into flames. To answer your question below, was there a death or injury, was there a fire, was there property damage. All of this have a great possibility of incurring if they have not already been incurred by others. Thank you for your assistance. I spoke to Hyundai Consumer Affairs and they were not willing to pay for or assist in paying for the repairs in any manner.

Consumer stated when she opened the door to her new vehicle, an odor/chemical odor blasted at her, when she asked the salesman about the odor he infomred her that was just a new car smell, however the odor never went away even with the vehicle being aired out daily, the dealer never resolved the problem, consumer requested to turn vehicle back in, but was informed that if the vehicle was turned in on a trade consumer would get $2000 less that what she paid for it, possible fuel system problem, consumer states that the smell made her dizzy and nauseated.
