I have had this car for exactly 6 years, and in a couple of weeks I am about to pay it off - which is all exciting until... it is time to get my car inspected and I can't get it to pass because of 2 codes I have on the car that won't go away. P0455 & P0420. I have dealt with the first code now for maybe 2 years and have been able to clear the code with either the OBDII reader and taking one of the leads off of the battery. But this time around that is not the case.
I tried alone just erasing the codes with the OBDII reader and after maybe 10 miles it would come back on. So here it is mid July I read online to change the O2 sensor for the upstream. Cost me just under $50 for the sensor off of Amazon. Took maybe only 30 mins to change it. Pretty simple. Once I erased the code it came back on after 20 miles or so. At this point I'm so annoyed.
So I then added 3 Catacleans to the car. One of them I put in my car when I had like 20 miles of gas left in my tank, the other 2 I added when I filled up my tank. After driving another 20-25 miles the light came back on. Again I erased the codes and just hoped I could get it to pass inspection. Well, you can guess what happened. I didn't pass because the codes were showing up on the reader as pending. After doing my own diagnostic with the OBDII reader, the graph for the O2 Sensor downstream was reading all over the place for the voltage, which in this case means the Catalytic Converter is bad.
I am still trying to figure out what to do, since I'm at 150k miles with the car and I've already had to replace the engine. I was told by my mechanic to get a Catalytic Converter from the dealership itself because the aftermarket one's won't resolve the check engine light issue. The ones from the dealership are estimated around $900+ then of course the labor from the mechanic we are looking at roughly $1200 roughly give or take.
