Bought a 2007 Elantra used in 2012. Nothing but problems with it. First, in 2013 I had to get the immobilizer module fixed and I would have to wait for the security symbol to light up on the dash before I could get the car to start. Lots of times it still didn't start and I would have to keep taking the key out and reinserting it.
Then in July of this year I am driving along the freeway and I felt a thud. I thought I had run over something. I parked and when I started the car up again the engine light was on and it felt like I was driving in first gear. I took it to a mechanic to have it scanned and the code that came up was for the shift solenoids. He recommended I take it to a transmission specialist. I ended up paying $1000 Canadian for them to replace the solenoids.
A week later, driving along and I get the thud again, take it back to the shop and they now tell me it could be an internal problem with the transmission. I ended up going to the Hyundai dealership for them to look at it. A whole list of codes came up including the damn immobilizer module that I had "fixed" in 2013. I am told the transmission is failing along with a bunch of other things. In total, the cost to fix all that is wrong would be $5000. No thanks. I went and bought a new Honda. I am done with Hyundai.
