Trunk lid torsion bar has failed (end corner severed) on 2010 Elantra; visual inspection of bars on this vehicle and another of same model we own shows possible premature wear/metal fatigue. Web research indicates this may be a factory defect, i.e. high rate of incidents for this car model.
Opening and closing of trunk now elicits grinding metal noise. Concerns include possible metal fragments being projected from these high tension systems.
Both vehicles are out of warranty; however, this is a safety matter, and a courtesy replacement was requested, per above. Hyundai advised us to buy new parts from one of their dealers.
Update from Nov 17, 2018: Dealer sold us a new replacement part at cost and installed it gratis; no problems since with trunk torsion bar.

This happened while I was loading trunk if I had not just stood up from loading I would have been hit in head or body and been hurt badly .The garage will not cover under any extended warranty. I asked if this would be considered a safety complaint and Hyundia Canada said not to their knowledge .
