The car started shifting really hard one day at low speeds probably from first to second gear, maybe even third gear I did't really try to figure it out because I was already annoyed with it for other issues going on at the same time. Once on the highway the hard shifting stopped. If I remember correctly if only did it when it was cold.
We brought it to the Hyundai stealer and they diagnosed it as a transmission coolant temperature sensor and would fix it for a whopping $650 but did not guarantee that this would fix the problem. They said it may be the wiring harness to the sensor but because the sensor was cheaper they would try the sensor change first. So if the sensor change didn't fix the problem then it would have cost us another 8 or $900 to replace the harness. Not a happy camper.
We decided at that point to trade the car in, but not at this dealer, so did not go ahead with the repair.
This car has been one problem after another, so it didn't take long to lose any confidence we had in Hyundai and this piece of junk they built.

05 Chevy Impala 3.8 Police Package. Bought late 2012 with 68000 miles. Transmission shifts rough from 1-2 and 2-3. Currently has 148,000 miles purely because I baby it at stop and go traffic, stop lights, and any other stops. If anyone else drives it, it will buck at every stop. Other than a poor transmission solenoid life it has been pretty good to me. I have not switched the solenoids because I have little to no patience with mechanical crap, I am too cheap to pay a mechanic, and I am fat and lazy. I have had the transmission fluid and solenoids in my garage for 8 months. I will update if I change them. But I probably won't, we'll see.

I went to my mechanic today when the engine light came on. They where nice enough to print out the technical service bulletin and showed me exactly what the problem was. the wiring harness was not made well enough to withstand the abuse and it causes problems with the sensor as well. Hyundai knows about this and it covers several models in recent years. since I bought my car used and I am 7k over on my mfg warranty I don't know if Hyundai will cover it. Though I am going to take it to a local dealer and see what can be done. At this point though you have to replace the transmission fluid, the gasket(revised), the wiring harness(revised) and the sensor(revised) to fix the problem. is NOT recommended to replace the whole transmission for this problem. so if you have this problem ask to see if the error codes fit the technical service bulletin 12-AT-021 I will update once the repair has been done be it with the dealer or my mechanic

I noticed that it was harder to shift into Reverse and 1st gear when the car was cold (even worse during winter), but as soon as the car warmed up there was no problem putting it into gear. Nowadays, I struggle to put the car into Reverse, 1st, and 2nd gear even when the car is already warm. This car only has 162,000 km.
I already changed the transmission fluid when I hit 120,000 km for the one recommended by the maintenance manual. This car has been well maintained. I need to add that I have seen manual transmissions (others makes) to go way beyond 300,000 km with proper maintenance without even changing the clutch.
