Elantra GLS 1.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 127,000 miles

Loud clunking noise when rocking steering wheel from right to left, also when turning. It's scary and make me think something is going to come loose while driving. It's not under warranty, but seriously needs to be repaired. Was told that Hyundai knows about this problem but have neglected to do anything about it.

My mechanic said there was a "Silent Recall" on the Hyundai's. Said you have to complain to get it done. I looked it up and it's a small piece in the steering column that basically falls apart. It's probably a $2.00 part.

I am going to try to rant and rave to the local dealer but I'm guessing you get what you pay for. A cheap car is cheap for a reason!

My steering wheel makes a horrible knocking noise and sounds like the steering wheel is going to come off if I hit even the smallest bump in the road. It shakes terribly and is incredibly loose. I was told by the dealership that it was initially a 60,000 mile warranty issue and that they've increased it to 100,000 miles, but I think it should be a recall due to being such a widespread problem.

Had the actual steering wheel replaced due to the wheel flaking, coming apart back in May of 2016. When the dealer replaced the steering wheel, we started noticing a small rubbing noise as you made any turns on the wheel. This car was being driven by my son in college and when he came back in December is when we noticed that the noise had gotten worse.

We made an appointment with the same local dealer after the holiday, we were informed that the entire steering wheel had to be replaced and that we were passed our warranty date by a month. I protested and they reached out to Hyundai and were given a GOOD FAITH money of $500 to cover the $1500 repair. This is bull.

I am reaching out to Hyundai of America and filing a protest plus whatever I need to do.
