problem #2

Elantra

  • Automatic transmission
  • 46,000 miles

Like others, my trunk will pop open from time to time. There appears not to be a 'cause' (trunk button pushed by mistake) -- it has done it after I left the car. Neighbors with same model and year say they sometimes have difficulty as well.

problem #1

Elantra ES

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,000 miles

During the week of May 6, I was at our corporate office in Petaluma, CA. On two occasions during that week, colleagues came to me to say that the trunk to my rental car (a Hyundai Elantra) was open. On May 12, I went to the San Francisco Giants baseball game and parked in Lot C a few blocks from the ballpark. I put all my valuable, including my briefcase with laptop, checkbook, cash and valuable files and jump drives in my trunk. I consciously turned and locked the car (realizing my sport coat was in the back seat) before heading to the game. After the game, I drove back to Petaluma and upon opening the trunk I was astounded to see that it was empty. My briefcase and everything within were gone. I filed a police report. This week, I returned to the corporate office and was given another Hyundai Elantra as my rental car. The next morning when I came out of Starbucks, I was very surprised to see the trunk open. I began researching “truck latch deficiencies” on the internet and discovered scores of complaints of the same problem. At this point, I am pretty convinced that Hyundai’s issue with this problem was the direct cause of my laptop and everything else being stolen in the parking lot at the Giants’ game. Suffice it to say that my company is prepared to seek resolution for this flaw in Elantra trunk latches.
