My engine recently developed a loud ticking noise at 78,000 miles. I took it into my local Hyundai dealer and they informed me that I needed a new engine and advice me not to drive the car because the engine could seize up. The noise lasted no longer than a week before I took it in. The car was also regularly serviced and I have receipts. The dealership found metal debris in the oil pan but could not diagnose the exact issue without completely disassembling the engine. When looking online, this problem pops up hundreds of times for this make and model of car but Hyundai has never issued a recall.

Engine stalled on me. Every time I press the gas pedal it jerks. Sometimes when I start the car it won't start. Also if it takes a while to start it will stall the whole time while driving. I can press on the gas pedal but it will drive like 1 mile per minute. I can hear the engine roaring, but it just won't move. I took it in to Hyundai they fixed it, but now my car is starting it again. I recently got on the freeway and right when I pressed the gas peddle it jerked and the engine light came on. Now it's starting to do the same thing taking a while to start, and stalling out of nowhere. I can also hear almost like a knock and the gears shifting when I'm driving, when I stop and go I can hear everything. I'm afraid to go anywhere far in my car because I never know what's going to happen. I think this engine need to be assessed because this is not normal at all.

Started hearing a ticking noise in the engine once it turned cold. Would hear the noise when I started up the car from a stationary position and noise would accelerate as I pressed on the gas and decrease as I slowed down. Took to a Hyundai dealership and was told that there were metal shavings probably from the rod bearings in the engine. Told I would need a new engine and provided a cost of $8,000.

  • 130,000 miles
My 2013 Elantra sedan built in Alabama on June 14, 2013, and equipped with a 1.8L engine. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership because it cut off on me while driving in the middle of a canyon, in traffic. The brakes did not work. The cars steering locked up and could not control the car more than to veer it off the road with the forward momentum from coming down a hill. I was told the engine needed to be replaced due to the oil level being too low. I had just had it replaced and checked about a week before. Then I was told it was a connecting rod that had broken. I've left the car at the dealership at the moment because I feel like this is a manufacturing defect and will not pay out of pocket for a repair that would be covered in Canada.

We bought the car used in 2017 from dealership. One month after purchase and less than 1000 miles after purchase, and less than 64000 miles total, the engine needed to be replaced due to oil issues with the cylinders. Adequate oil was in car and dealer insisted that all checks had been performed prior to sale. I have recently read about recalls for other Kia and Hyundai vehicles due to engine failure problems for the same reason. I am reporting this issue in hope that this Agency will consider investigating to see if the recall should be extended to Hyundai Elantras. This issue appears to be repeating among other vehicles made by hyandai in the same time frame my car was manufactured. I am also concerned about the repair that was performed because now there are additional recalls by Hyundai and Kia for the engine repairs that were performed on the other recalled models. The dealership and Hyundai did cover most of cost of engine replacement but I want to be sure the repair was safely done. There are reports of engine fires related to high pressure fuel pipes and fuel leaks.

Intermittent engine light illumination. Happens only after the "vehicle check in progress". car has started to run rough both while accelerating and at a stop. Acts like it will shut off. Having to put the car in neutral and pat the gas to keep it running. There is a tsb for this issue but no active recall. Constant run around at the service centers. They say its normal for it to run rough. Also the rubber steering coupler went bad. Was making a thud noise when steering wheel was turned. Also a tsb for this....no recall. But wait theres more! the clock spring is also bad! tsb for this too! bad clock spring results in the loss of power to the buttons on the right side of the steering wheel. When I replaced the steering coupling, I forgot to plug in a wiring harness under the wheel and the buttons started working again but had no power steering. Plugged the harness back in and had steering but the buttons no longer worked. Pretty sure Hyundai is uploading error codes and giving people the run around in an attempt to get more money. Recall this crap already before something bad happens. Hold this company responsible for selling crap to people.

Vehicle's engine making a tapping noise from under hood on passenger side when engine was started. Noise increased with acceleration. Vehicle was taken to a certified master mechanic. Mechanic was able to duplicate concern. Vehicle has only 78096 miles. Master mechanic determined the vehicle needs new engine and recognized that this issue should not occur on a vehicle with such low mileage. Mechanic recommended that vehicle be taken to Hyundai dealership to have them replace engine under major concern of safety issues : vehicle stalling. Hyundai dealership has vehicle but as of date has not answered to replacing defective engine under a warranty.

In November of 2016 notice car began to hesitate and coming home from a drive the vehicle died in front of house. Took to Hyundai vacaville and they stated it was a computer problem. Update applied, drove home and noticed ticking from engine. Drove to work and noticed lower gas mileage and continued ticking. I took the car back to the dealer who said this time it was the fuel injectors and to put in cleaner. Drove home and then to work and noticed ticking getting louder. Took the car back to dealer and this time I was told that the engine needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, I was out of warranty and had to pay for it out of pocket with a re manufactured factory engine which was installed around 12/23/2016. Since then still notice a ticking with new engine after putting about 40,000 miles on it and concerned that I was provided with a bad engine again. I keep up with maintenance as I did with the first engine with oil changes every 3,000 miles instead of the the recommended 7,500. I have noticed many other complaints of owners of model year 2013 with similar issues. The failure with the first engine was at 127, 565 which I believe should still not have happened as I have a 2010 accent with 180,000 and no problems, and had several other vehicles that went beyond 200,000 with no issues. I noticed the ticking noise back then to be pronounced when accelerating up hill and with current engine usually have to warm it up so that when I drive I do not hear any ticking.
