Elantra Limited 1.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 99,705 miles

I noticed this when driving the car in town at slow speeds, usually around 15-25 miles an hour, with rpms at about 1250. First noticed an issue with extremely jerky driving, but added gas and the problem went away, and I thought it was a one-time thing. About a week later, it happened again. I set an appointment to the Murdock Hyundai of Murray Utah to solve this issue that was putting my family and my security in risk. On June 18th around 6 pm, they did a diagnostic check in the dealership, and then they recommended me to clean my gas injectors, to do a tune-up, to do an alignment and to add new four tires, since they were totally damaged. Also they had some kind of Hyundai solvent cleaners for the gas engine. All of the services had a total of $1043 dollars. I thought it was all it needed, but no, it was not.

A few days later, the car started to have the same symptoms as before, losing power again, with the engine slowing down and bad gas mileage... I set up another appointment with the ideal dealership days later... In that week, the car died was acting very poor, and it felt like the whole car was unbalanced while driving in town twice, and also when I was driving into work once the engine shut off again. It is the smoothest shutoff I have ever experienced, only the engine dies, and it starts right up once I stop and put it in park. It doesn't even notice the engine turn off until I try to press the gas. Hyundai should cover for all of these expenses, my car is not under guarantee so I paid from my pocket to fix all of this because I did not have another option at that moment.

This is insane, and I'm totally frustrated with Hyundai's company that sell vehicles that do not have durability for the consumer and something that could break apart any time when a family is driving it - it can put the life of any person driving this type of car at risk at any time.

engine stalls/dies while driving engine stalls/dies while driving

The car had to be towed in the dealership, who confirmed that the transmission was slipping and needed to be replaced. They put in a remanufactured transmission and did a fuel cleaning service, new fuel injectors, new ignition coils and new spark plugs, and confirmed that they would fix the stalling issue. But after driving the vehicle to 110,000 miles the stalling continued I took it to an other dealership, they wanted to do the same process of cleaning the fuel system replacing the spark plugs and replacing the ignition coils. I told them no, they’ve all been done brand new. I took it to a place called Christian Brothers in Oklahoma City off Hefner Parkway and they were able to confirm with a leak down test that the engine had 165 psi on each cylinder a good engine should have between 185 and 200 psi per cylinder so the leak down test confirmed that the intake and exhaust valves were bad.

I had to replace the whole motor which was thousands of dollars. This car has been an awful vehicle the transmission has gone bad and the motor has gone bad, I only paid $8,500 for the car used with no warranty and I did not buy the extended warranty since I was told that it’s a scam overall. I’m very disappointed even with the new engine, I’m only getting 22 miles to the gallon in the city may be a little more on the highway but it’s not as promised for fuel economy. Maybe it will get better once I break in the new engine.

I will never buy a Hyundai again, I’ll stay with my Toyota that has 285,234 miles on the original engine and transmission.

When the car is idling or driving up to 30 miles an hour, the car will die. Oil pressure light will flicker during this time, and prior to the engine dying. It has been progressively increasing over the past week. Car will start right back up again when the engine is turned. Oil flickering will stay off for at least a minute then start to do it again.

I start my car when it’s cold. Not even that cold, like 34°... I pressed hard on the gas because my son was going to be late for school. When the rpms got high and the car had just started and it was cold... the car just died. The Check Engine light goes on first before it stalls, then the battery and finally the oil light and it just stalls after that. It’s impossible to start again. I have to wait and wait and then turn it and rev the gas and slam it into drive and drive and it won’t shift until like 6k Rpms - until maybe it warms up??? I don’t know!!!!

It seems like the transmission? I have not a clue, but it’s been happening since I bought the car!!! For way more than it’s worth, I must add!!! After it’s warmed up and I brake, it idles like it wants to push forward. But I park and restart it and then it’s fine. Like when the transmission is cold?? It shifts weird in one gear also when I’m driving normally!!!! So I just don’t know and now the check engine light is on again after it stalled out again.

I’m so unbelievably pissed!!! And I just get the run around at the dealership - “they can’t find anything wrong”, they replaced the battery, and turned off the check engine light! It’s bulls*** and I’m so over it! I’m bringing it to a mechanic I trust to tell me what’s wrong with it. And the dealership is fixing it!!!!! I just don’t know what to do...

Bought my Elantra brand new, had all the regularly oil changes and maintenance done. We had a bit of a cold snap here, about a week or so of -30 weather. Car started making a ticking noise on Saturday when I accelerated. Didn't think much of it as it has been really cold. Didn't drive the vehicle again until Tuesday as we had a nasty ice storm. While driving the battery light quickly flashed, then the car died completely in traffic with the engine, oil and battery lights illuminated. I turned the car off and then on again and it started right up but continued to do stall out every five minutes or so.

Brought the car into Hyundai and I was shocked to find out that they needed to replace my short block engine. They advised me that this was a problem that been happening with quite a few Elantra's. My engine is being replaced under warranty as there is only 79000 kms on the engine.

My dealership is being great about the whole situation but I feel that the recall that was issued in 2017 for this exact problem on the Santa Fe's and Sonata's should obviously be extended to the Elantra's as well.

The issue is random rough idle. Idle speed drops to approx 500 rpm and gets very rough. I have read forums for solutions and have not found anything that they say is the cure. The car runs OK as long as the RPMs are elevated.

Update from Dec 31, 2018: This did not do this when new but has gotten worse over time. It is not related to the AC compressor kicking on and off.

Bought this car brand new from local Hyundai dealer. I have three other Hyundai ,all have been great. This one is driven by my 25 year old daughter. She came home one day and told me the car began to shake and just shut down. She pulled to the side and pressed hard on brake due to no engine. All power steering and brake was gone. She turned key and car restarted. I am very handy with cars. My diagnostic tool showed no error code and everything under hood from what I could see looked good. I felt it was just a computer glitch, until it happened again about a month and a half later. Will re post that episode.

Posting again same problem occurred. After driving good for approximately 6 weeks my daughter states while driving car in very nice weather at around 35 mph car shook and just shut off. This time almost hitting a car. Took car to Hyundai dealer where I had purchased explained the problem. Manager said he hasn't heard of any issues with the Elantras. I told him to check on line, looks like other people have reported same problem. He said his mechanic will check for codes. He came back and stated no codes where recorded on the cars computer, so there was nothing he could do.

I also contacted Hyundai corporate they called via telephone very nice women listened to my concerns also said as of now nothing could be done. I do understand that there are many parts to these cars and if the computer shows no code not much can be done. I guess they both told me if it happens again to contact them both. So I replaced battery, spark plugs, air filter and a few just general things so far it hasn't happened but if it does happen again and there is not a solution, I will definitely get rid of this car and I would not be purchasing another Hyundai vehicle

OK, so the car is doing the same thing as it did in May. The timing valve fix is apparently good for 4000 miles. In the past week, my car has died 4 times, once at 30 mph, so now the speeds it dies at are increasing. I take it in today so we will see what they do this time. Last time I was there they were thinking about changing the whole engine but stopped at the timing valve. Luckily I'm still in their standard warranty time frame (by 25 miles) so they still cant charge me for anything. I will say that they were able to duplicate the issue last time. Here is hoping they can do it again. I might drive around and try to video it just in case they think I'm insane. Apparently this is an issue that pops up on multiple Hyundais so maybe a recall is in order. Either way, it's an issue and I really don't want to get another Hyundai ever again. My Toyotas never had this problem

So, this is the THIRD time I have taken my car into the service center to get it worked on. This car will die while I am driving between 15-30 miles an hour and about 1250 rpms. The car just shuts off, all the check engine lights come on, and I have to pull over to put the car in park and restart it. I'm usually going slow enough that it isn't a huge issue, but I live in Wisconsin. There are hundreds of roundabouts in this state, and it snows a lot. If my car shuts down in a roundabout on an icy road, I'm probably going to crash because I have no ability to control my speed other than with my brakes. Also, since the car just dies, nobody behind me knows I can't accelerate anymore and if they aren't 100% attentive, I could get rear ended. This is an automatic as well. The first time I took it in, they replaced the timing cover, and it got a little better, but still hasn't fixed the issue. The second and third time, they could not duplicate the gripe. This third time I came in, and the car idles rough as well. They confirmed rough idling, but there were no engine codes so they didn't fix anything. Told me my battery was going bad, but there were no codes so they couldn't do anything. I am getting really sick of this issue, its been 6 months, 3 trips, and no fix.

engine stalls/dies while driving engine stalls/dies while driving

While driving on 5 Freeway in California my 2014 Hyundai Elantra started to violently shake like someone hitting the brake and then the car just shut down. I threw it in neutral and help my wife turn the steering wheel because we lost power steering. We got lucky and had a space to coast to the side of the road.

When we got towed to Tuttle-Click in Irvine, Ca and our car turned into the Service department, they basically said we are on our own to find a ride back home and no loaner car. Two days later I have to call them to find out the problem, first a technician said that it was a bad battery but that would not have caused it to completely shut down. Then a few hours later the Service Manager calls to say it was the battery and that is what caused it to shut down on us. I don't know who to believe but my wife doesn't want to ever drive or ride in it again.

I have filed a complaint with Hyundai Corporate but don't know what they can do? I guess time will tell

The car died 4 times, the engine completely shut off.It would throttle by itself at lights or in the drive thru.I could not drive up until no one was in front of me because the car would hesitate then jerk forward.Almost got hit from behind making a right turn because the car would not accelerate with oncoming traffic approaching from behind.

We purchased the extended warranty in June of 2014 by Dec 2014 the car was in the dealership. They told us it was a transmission issue and the extended warranty would not cover that.It would cost at least 3,000.00 out of pocket to repair a car that is less than 6 months old.

Was driving this new car from Florida to Ohio when I pulled off the highway in Georgia to get gas. Only 701 miles on the car at the time. The car dies when I step on the brake for the stop sign. Car will not turn over despite numerous attempts. I finally floor the gas petal while trying to start the car. This turns the motor over but dies when I take my foot off the petal. To move the car off the off ramp of the highway, I have to put the car in neutral, put my foot on the brake and floor the car to start it and drop it in drive and drive with my foot on the brake and floor the car to get it to move.

As I then pull into a gas station, of course it stalls again because I have to slow down. The car will not start now and the check engine light is on, the battery light is on and so is the oil light. Now I find out what 5 year road side assistance is all about. I call them and yes, they will come tow my car to the nearest dealer. This is happening on a Saturday night at 11:30 so she says they will work on my car on Monday. She tells me my hotel stay and rental car are all out of pocket on my part. She gives me a phone number for a rental car place that is not open on Sundays. She then gives me a rental car number that operates 24 hours a day and is 70 miles from my location. I end up cancelling the tow truck and sleep in my car hoping that maybe if the car cools down, it will start in the morning. In the morning after several attempts the car will run if I give it gas continuously and not let up on the gas. I end up driving with my foot on the brake and flooring the car until I get back on the highway. The check engine light stayed on the entire way to Ohio.

We were just getting into Panama City Beach, FL for a week's vacation. Were on a very busy street and the car just died. Very hot outside, people backed up behind us. Could start the car, but when lift off the break, it would die again. Police helped us push it off the busy road into a parking lot.

I've had it only two months - it's a brand new car! Ended up calling Hyundai via BluLink - they sent a tow truck and called local Hyundai

dealership (3 hour ordeal). They gave us a loaner car and kept the car over the weekend.

It turns out it needs a new dual continuous variable valve timing part - timing was off. Will take a couple more days to get the part and get it installed.

Our concerns - this is a new car and a part goes bad? One that makes the car quit? What if it had happened on the open highway and caused us to crash? Will it happen again on our way home - a 700 mile drive? Not sure I trust the car now, given it's new and has a problem such as this. In my research, it looks like this is a new feature to the 2014. I'm just worried about this car now - and I loved it up until this point.

Am thankful, however, that's it is under warranty, but hoping the dealership goes over the car really good to make sure it is safe.
