Elantra SE 2.0L

Hyundai says manufacturing problems could have left metallic debris around the engine crankshaft and cause problems with oil flow. The pieces of metal could interfere with the oil flow through the connecting rod bearings and damage the connecting rod.

…This sounds like what my mechanic described, caused total engine failure. I have on Sundays for a years and I can't. I am a little short of understand why I never saw engine lights on giving me an alert that something was going wrong. There was no check engine light that ever came on. I was entering the interstate and hit acceleration to get into the lane and the car just bogged down and wouldn't shift gears so I assumed it was transmission, but my mechanic says the car is throwing so many codes in the engine that he can't even address the transmission. The car won't turn over at all and stay running. I'm beside myself, I have been a loyal Hyundai customer for a lot of years and I ran the bin and it doesn't look like it's one of the engines they're covering but yet it has the same issues. I wish there was a solution.

Elantra Sport

  • Manual transmission

The engine began knocking around 80,000 miles. Allen Turner Hyundai in Pensacola, FL initially tried to blame lack of oil changes for the problem, but I had my receipts. Then they told me I was waiting too long between changes even though I was changing the oil on the schedule that I was told to follow and is also listed in the owners manual. They were not going to cover this at all.

I had to get loud and obnoxious to even get a manager on the phone and then had to speak to the GM and also get loud and obnoxious before he would even bother to listen. Ultimately, I had to $500 for a problem that never should have occurred. They could have corrected the issue before the engine blew up. I was without my car for an extended period of time and also had to get loud and obnoxious to get into a loaner vehicle (the Hyundai was my only mode of transportation).

Elantra Limited 1.8L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 78,300 miles

As I was driving down the freeway on my way to work the car engine light and oil light came on and immediately the car died going 60 miles an hour I barely made it to the side of the road. Was unable to get out of the car due to traffic call the tow truck and wants tow truck arrived he advised there was a huge puddle of oil under the car had the car towed to a mechanic where he said the crankshaft seize the engine immediately. Was told had to have the engine replaced so am now having it towed to a Hyundai dealership for warranty evaluation. Will advise once I find out more information.

Update from Feb 7, 2019: So Hyundai did advise that it was due to lower engine failure and they would replace the engine. Advised it was on backorder though and didn't have a date when I would get it back. I waited 6 months for the engine replacement before I finally got my car back.
