Elantra GT GLS 1.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,864 miles

The steering has never felt correct since day one. Hyundai assured me that the feel was normal. The steering has always had a jerky feel to it and it never returns to center when going around a tight turn. Sometimes it will move on its own and do a shake back and forth. This is very unnerving as to how do I know the steering won't just stop working. It feels like it is not connected to the car and feels loose. I have tried the 3 different settings and have stuck to comfort mode but I prefer to call it uncomfortable because this car does not make me feel safe when driving it .

Update from Jun 25, 2020: $1400 later and the steering box had to be replaced and the stabilizer bar also destroyed itself . What a piece of s** car... This steering issue was in problem from day one and hungdie refused to repair it or replace these faulty parts . I was told by Hungdie that's the way it is and I had to get used to it.

I hate this car beyond belief, and rarely drive it. Only my wife and daughter drive it which is also rare as my wife walks to work and my daughter always has a company rental. What a piece of sht car. Still drives like the garbage it is. Now the front struts have to be replaced but I can't afford it.

This condition is the same as that described in many of the steering complaints already posted. There is excessive play in the wheel. It makes a thunk noise each time it hits the end of the play. It makes it when going over a rough patch in the road.

The exact symptoms can be seen in the opening minute of the Youtube video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTUn7dN4Qo8

Elantra GT GT

Purchased car used with 12k miles on it. Now it has 60k and the steering coupler needs replacement. This is a common problem with the elantra. A really big pain in the butt to repair. This should be a recall from hyundai. The steering wheel feels like it wants to drive itself to the left or right. There is so much play in the steering...very dangerous.

My car steering feels loose and I'm worried my car is unsafe. Funny that when I Google issue... there is a known steering wheel coupler recall on Sonata's and Elantra's but not my Elantra... $275 plus tax to fix.
