Genesis 5.0 R-spec 5.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 55,465 miles

Mid-June I was driving along when a huge white plume of smoke erupted behind my vehicle. The smoke from the car was so thick it completely blocked the view behind the car. The vehicle lost all power and I had to coast to stop safely. Momentarily all indicator and warning lights illuminated, then the car went completely dead. A very strong burnt electrical smell enveloped the car, so badly the flatbed tow truck driver asked if my car was a manual transmission, which it is not. He even thought the car may be on fire due to the smell, but it was not.

Vehicle was flatbedded to Lithia Hyundai in Anchorage on June 27th, then fast forward to today 9/23/21. The vehicle motor is seized, most likely due to a broken bearing. The motor must be broke down at a cost of $3600 to me, even thought it has an extended warranty through GWC warranty company. The dealer has found another motor for my car which as 40,000 miles and costs $8700.

Normally the 2012 5.0L fails due to excessive oil consumption then the motor seizes. My motor did not have this issue. It's been a long waiting game of not knowing what is the actual diagnosis of failure.
