Genesis Sedan,Tech 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 164,000 miles

This is still a significant problem with the 2012 Genesis sedan. The problem occurs when an after market battery is installed. The positive post is not the exact same diameter as the factory post. due to the odd design of the clamping mechanism, it is never fully secured even when the clamp retaining bolt is fully tightened.

I chose to modify the clamp mechanism by adding an additional piece of metal to the clamp, allowing the device to clamp/wedge tighter. This solution worked great for many years. Until I took my car in for servicing. The mechanic did not see the modification I made. Almost like clockwork, the car shut down on a low speed turn within days. Needles to say, I have replaced the metal spacer.

Genesis forum was also helpfull.

While turning right at a very low rate of speed car just cuts off and I have no control. Steering is gone brakes will not work and finally got it to stop on the side of the road and put it in park and pushed the crank button and it comes right back on. So I decided to ask google about this and I found all these complaints. Scared the mess out of me. Good thing no one was behind me at the time. Makes me scared to even drive it now. There needs to be a recall on this before me or someone else is killed. Oh yea that's right that is actually what has to happen in order for anyone to take you serious. Everyone wants your money and gladly take it but no one wants to fix the problem. I can not really say what I would like to on here. Hyundai get your mess right on the Genesis.

I have a 2012 Hyundai Genesis that my son drives. It has cut off on him four times while driving since we purchased the car in Nov. of 2014. It has cut off on me once since I've had it the last month. He now drives my vehicle since this car is a safety hazard and I refuse to let him drive it. I have taken it back to the dealership on three separate occasions, the last time they kept it for a week. They have no clue what to do since they cannot duplicate the problem. Dealing with Hyundai Corporate is no better. They want me to keep taking it back to the dealer. They (corporate) have told me that since "the dealer cannot duplicate the problem, there is no problem". I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA over this vehicle. Everyone I have spoken with admits that this is a safety issue but they have no clue how to fix it or do not seem to have any desire to try and learn how to fix it. After this issue is handled, however it ends up, I will never own another Hyundai vehicle.

Engine shut off while driving at a very low speed twice this month. Dealer said he wasn't familiar with any complaints and would contact Hyundai corporate to see if they heard of the problem. Got a call from the dealership service dept. the next day and they said nothing showed up with the codes and Hyundai doesn't have a solution. I'm totally paranoid driving it now. This is bound to happen again and I'm afraid it will happen while pulling out onto a road with traffic and stall causing a crash.

Genesis Tech Package 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 35,000 miles

Making a slow 15 to 20 mph uphill right hand turn the engine stalled. The loss of steering and brakes were immediate. Everything else remained on - radio, lights etc. Rolled to stop, no one behind me thankfully. Turned off car, turned back on, restarted. Dealer cannot reproduce, no codes found. Read in a Genesis forum the ESC may over react in some situations. May try turning it off. Still not a fix. Dangerous problem, I will report as suggested elsewhere in carcomplaints.com.

Update from Aug 1, 2017: Rick Case Hyundai checked every possibility as soon as I arrived at the dealer. The head tech reset all the computers. If it ever stalls again the plan is to put in a new throttle body. It has been about a month and no problems so far.

Genesis Sedan 3.8i

Experienced same issue as most other 2012 Genesis 3.8 owners. Slowed down to make a right hand turn so going less than 20 mph and car just shut off. All lights came on so no clear indication of the cause. Took a minute to reset, then re-started and made it home ok. Temp outside was about 101F so had A/C going of course. Thought it might be a situation with the FOB so changed to my spare. This is the 1st time (so far) that it has happened. The frightening part for me is that if it happens as frequently as I have read, I will be in a serious accident as I drive downtown for work. Hopefully Hyundai will come up with a solution soon but I'm afraid, like several other car maker's issues, it will take several fatalities before they are concerned enough to really investigate the cause.

On April 1 My 2012 Genesis just completely shut off on my wife while making a left turn around 25 mph. she barely had enough time to get over and not get hit. this is the second time this has happened it is dangerous if you are not paying attention. the dealer has no idea of what is wrong they are guessing. Hyundai of north America pretended that they have never heard of this problem, if anyone has this problem, contact Hyundai and start a case with them ,also call NTSB at 888-327-4236 and complain to them also I was told that there needs to be more complaints so they can make Hyundai start a recall Thank you stay safe

The car stalls constantly while I am driving. I went to two Hyundai dealers mechanic and they could not find the problem. Then I went to another mechanic other than Hyundai. They loaded the car on a computerized machine to determine the problem. They also can not find the problem. I call Hyundai corporate, I was told to fix the car on my own. I believe Hyundai company is buying time so that I reach the 100,000 miles which is the warranty limit so that they can wash their hand and I will be on my own.

The engine quits while driving. Not once or twice, many, many, times. This is almost certain to result in a crash or someone getting hurt..... a pedestrian maybe. The vehicle has no power brakes or steering when the engine quits. The dealership has inspected the vehicle without finding any problems. The dealership suggested to NOT top off the tank when filling up with gasoline...... that did not help. The problem continues. Initially, the engine quit when coming to a stop and while still rolling. Lately, the engine quits while driving at speed..... 25 to 30 MPH. It is unpredictable...and dangerous. Hyundai was made aware of the problem in May of 2015 and informed that they could do nothing as the problem was intermittent. ( Case # 7918680)

Update from Nov 30, 2016: It is important for each Hyundai Genesis owner to contact the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration to inform them of the engine quitting problem.....before somebody gets killed or injured.

The NHTSA telephone number is 888-327-4236

Hyundai will do nothing until NHTSA holds them accountable.

Please pick up the telephone and save somebody from being hurt...... perhaps a child or pedestrian.

Engine cuts off while driving. This is the first time I have reported it, but the SIXTH time it has happened. Always at low speeds (under 35mph). Braking and steering become extremely difficult, as all power assist is lost. I have to put it in N or P and restart. This is a serious issue. I took it to the dealership last month, and they said that they had in fact determined the issue which was to replace the CRANKSHAFT SENSOR ($311 total). This DID NOT solve the problem. I am taking it back to the dealership in two days. I just reported it to Hyundai North America. They are to call me next week for me to update them. How many complaints does it take for the manufacturer to issue a recall?

2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan stalled for the 3'time while driving. First couple of times in my neighborhood while making a right turn. This last time while on e freeway. I was able to get the car stopped, put it in park and then it started right up like nothing happened. The dealer has looked at this a couple times and cannot get a fault code so they don't know what to do with it. I contacted Hyundai North America and have opened up a case with them. If enough complaints are filed they will be forced to find a remedy before someone gets seriously injured.

Hyundai phone numbe is 800-633-5151 be sure you get to the Genesis, equous call line they have a special group that deals only with their higher end cars.

This happened twice yesterday. Once while turning (thank God it was in a residential area) and car just shut down but started up again. The next time about 40 minutes later, I was in my neighborhood and gently went over a speed-bump and it shut off again, and promptly started up. This concerns me greatly and I know all too well about the 'CAN'T DUPLICATE PROBLEM" that the dealer or repair shops usually respond. What if I was on the freeway and we have huge busy ones in the sixth largest city in the US. I will contact Hyundai tomorrow.

Update from Aug 21, 2016: I took my Genesis in the the dealer on 8/19/16 and this is what they did/said:

CUSTOMER STATES AT TIMES THE VEHICLE TURNS OFF AT PARKING LOT SPEEDS HAS TO STOP AND THE VEHICLE RESTARTS.

Driving down a side street with my children... suddenly the brakes barely work and the steering becomes excessively tough. Coasted into a strip mall parking lot and realized that the engine had died. Engine started right up again. Absolutely a disaster waiting to happen! If I were about to cross oncoming traffic, etc - I cannot imagine what would happen. Found similar issues on here and was very surprised. I had originally thought that maybe I had pushed the start/stop button for some strange reason... but that would have been very, very unlikely. Hope that Hyundai checks this out ASAP! Toyota dragged it's heels on the "unintended acceleration" problem... this is beginning to sound like "unintended loss of Steering and Braking".

Stalling Problems with my 2012 Hyundai Genesis. First time happen in 7/2015 next time 2/2016 and now 5/2016. This is a common issue and Hyundai need to acknowledge this is a ongoing problem. I have called the dealership a month after I purchased and complained that it happen to me 2 times and was told that you have not heard of this problem. Since owning this 2012 Genesis it has happen numerous times and now the issue is back again. I am a female who drives this vehicle every day and I am concern for my safety. Dealership is tell me that because they can't duplicate the problem after driving my vehicle for 40 miles that there is nothing they can do. My warranty is going to expire soon and I was told that if this issue happens after my warranty that I would be responsible for the repairs.

Engine shuts down when you're driving. it's happened 3 times since new. After 2nd time bringing it into the dealership they finally took the paint off the connectors. It was fine for a year and just happened again last week , a year later. Each time I was just about to get onto the Turnpike, but pulled off onto a swale with no control of the steering wheel to come to a stop. Turned the car on again and it ran fine, Really scares the "Hell" out of you. I can't imagine if I was on the turnpike when it happened. The last time , right on the ramp to get on; it did it and thank G-D there was some grass before I pulled on. I wonder if I'll be so lucky next time. Really thinking of getting Rid of this car and buying a reliable car where I don't have to think whether it's going to happen again . I really feel I'm taking a chance every time I get in it, especially when I am about to enter the Turnpike or any highway or busy road where there are 3 lanes.

Really Distressed.

Genesis Sedan 5.0L

The dealer hires people who want to blame the client. I had my car shut off about 12 times while driving. I brought this up to the front desk in the service dept. I had him look over the car and he kept telling me that I was the reason this happened. After 45 minutes letting him know I didn't care and I would have to pay to place the harness, I was extremely pissed. A tech came out and knew exactly what the problem was. It was due to using smaller battery post on new batteries, and the connector wasn't getting the full connection. Cars have caught on fire due to this, and I have a dead battery and it's NOT COVERED because it was after two years, what a Joke. I even took the car in and was there for more then a few hours having the battery tested, IT BARELY held a charge. and they let me leave.saying they can't cover the battery due to the time frame. a week later the car would not start.

I love the car but paying full sticker to get pushed around at the dealer. I only come in when it's a real issue and it's a waste of time. They expect to make an appointment each time that you have an issue and can't replicate the problem at the dealer. I am sick of it. I went out and bought a new battery so I didn't have to deal with it. Still extremely pissed.
