Kona SEL AWD 2.0L Atkinson 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 17,601 miles

On Oct. 5, 2022, I was driving a 2021 Kona with 17,000 miles on Interstate 81/581 bypass near Camp Hill, PA, at about 60 mph when suddenly check oil light came on followed by knocking and hissing and deceleration. I was able to pull off nearby exit and almost get onto shoulder before stopping dead with oil and other fluid running profusely from car. Large truck behind me almost crashed into guardrail on opposite side of ramp but stopped with long line of traffic behind him. I called 911, which sent state police, while the truck driver managed to back up traffic, so he could also back up and maneuver around me. State police arrived and stayed with me until AAA tow truck arrived 40 minutes later, as he was concerned with draining fluid and possible fire as well as traffic.

Car was towed to dealer, where it had received all required, as well as additional service visits and was just serviced and inspected on Sept. 20, 2022. This particular Kona engine was not subject to any recalls, although other 2021 engines were recalled. So much for the company redeeming itself after recent class action suit covering up to 2019 models!

I was advised that engine had failed with at least 3 month wait for replacement/repair. I determined that it might not be advisable to suffer great inconvenience for a prolonged period and then get another possibly faulty Hyundai engine. I was given a reduced $18,000 trade in on a 2021 Hyundai that would cost at least $23,000 if purchased used on the lot. Then I had a choice of the few available vehicles for purchase. I ended up losing a little over $20,000, but it would have been worse if I had not paid off the Hyundai some months ago, for which I paid almost $26,000. For $46.000, I could have a really great car!

This was reported to Hyundai per Case #20413584 and given case manager 65130 Been ignored since. Dealer is in process of breaking down engine and will send report to Hyundai. Dealer is Freysinger Hyundai in Mechanicsburg, PA. Also reported to NHTSA #1148871 amending original report 11488659.
