About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Discovered from passenger complaint that the two seat belt tensioners involved with the middle seat captain seats are defective. They will lock on their own without any deceleration or passenger intervention and not release unless the seat belt is unlocked & fully retracted. I have personally tested this and found both middle seat retractors to exhibit this failure even with the car standing still and powered off. A web searched revealed that Hyundai seat belts are under investigation by the NHTA at this time.

The second row driver side seat belt both comes unlatched and will not catch on the latch. This is intermittent but happens about 70% of the time. I feel it is dangerous and needs a repair immediately. It has been going on since May of this year. My 13-year-old most often occupies that seat.

The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Palisade. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. The contact also noticed smoke coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. Additionally, the rear passenger-??s seat belts failed to function properly and would inadvertently release while driving the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine, and the seat belt assemblies for all the rear passenger-??s seats needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

Both of our side seat of the middle row seatbelts will not buckle randomly or will just release. We-??ve brought it in several times and they say they can-??t find anything but it does this with my kids just sitting and riding. This has now been happening for years.

My driver seat belt has randomly popped off while driving it has happened 4 times since I bought this used 2020 palisade at the end of February it-??s very scary and i don-??t feel safe in this car. I don-??t think it has happened with my kids seatbelts but I don-??t trust them, I do not have the exact dates

The seatbelts in the second passenger captains chairs will appear to be latched/locked in, and then when driving will unlatch. We have our daughters tug on them to assure proper locking and they will appear locked and still come unlatched frequently while we are driving. This problem has been going on and off since we owned the vehicle. It definitely puts the safety of our children at risk as they seatbelts clearly have a defect and I'm scared to think what would happen if this occurred during a car wreck. It often cannot be reproduced, which is why we haven't taken it to a dealer. There's no rhyme or reason as to when/why it occurs. It probably happens 3-4 times per month. In reading on-line forums with other owners of this vehicle, dealers are not willing to fix it due to its inconsistency. The seatbelts warning light does not always come on when this happens.

The seatbelt is flush with the seat and does not allow for a safe and easy fashion to buckle our son in while in his booster seat. We can get it done, but it is extremely difficult and he cannot do it on his own. Upon doing some research, many people are now using seatbelt extenders to help with that issue, which is not allowed/rated for this use. I was considering it until I saw the potential danger involved.

Multiple seatbelts in the vehicle seem to be latched properly, then while driving, they become unlatched. This occurs often, but is made worse in colder weather.

Having a lot of issue with the rear seatbelt buckle being recessed to far into the seat to ensure it was properly buckled. There has been a few incidents where my child was unaware she did not fully buckle until the seatbelt came undone. It-??s gotten to the point where we decided to put her back into the car seat rather than a booster due to how difficult it is to buckle the seatbelt correctly

I have a 2020 hyundai palisade and it only has 9000 miles on it. The driver side seat belt and the second row middle seat belt will not buckle anymore. The driver seat belt start just a few month after i bought the car. The second row middle seat belt issue looks like came with the new car, we did not know because we did not use that seat until now. The dealer is making this my issue and they are telling me, this is due things stuck in the seat belt and asking me to pay to fix the issue.

It is extremely difficult to buckle the seatbelt around our childrens' booster seats. We have a six and nine-year-old who are fully capable of buckling their own seats. However, they are unable to buckle in this vehicle due to the limited slack on the buckle and the narrow captains' chairs in the second row. I am barely able to buckle them and often concerned that the clip did not secure properly due to the challenging nature of the process. This is a safety concern because if we were to wreck and it was not secured, my children's lives would be at risk.

THE SEATBELT BUCKLES FOR THE CAPTAINS CHAIRS ARE RECESSED INTO THE BODY OF THE SEAT. THIS MAKES IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT FOR BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN TO BUCKLE UP. THE BUCKLES ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO USE WITH BOOSTER CHAIRS WHITEOUT SOME AFTER MARKET MODIFICATION (NOT SAFE). Consumer stated buckles are recessed into the seat bottom and latch is angled inwards towards the seat making it even trickier to get to. The angles isn't helping with latching. Silicone and foam building block is used to hold buckle in place.

The middle row bucket seatbelts are installed too low into the recess of the seat making bucking extremely hard, and at times, preventing the seatbelt from clicking into place at all.
