steering wheel locked up steering wheel locked up

I was making a right turn, doing the speed limit (less than 40 MPH). I heard a large "boom or bang" and then my steering wheel locked. I could not turn the car at all, in any direction. When I tried to brake, I continued to skid. I crashed head on into a phone pole. Bumper came off, and the whole front car was crushed in. However, in spite the impact, my air bags did not deploy, and it should have.

In the few months I have owned the 2010 HYUNDAI SantaFe - the steering wheel has locked up at least four times. I locks the ignition and the shifter. The dealership said it's a safety thing and happens when you park on an incline. How does your car lockingup and being undrivable qualify as a safety "Thing"? Each time this has occured I have been parked on level ground. It can take up to 15 minutes of yanking at the steering wheel to release it. I would think this would cause damage to the steering column.

What's worse is that the dealership service department say it natural and is considered a safety feature. Well I've been lucky enough to get the car to function. If I get stranded out of town you can be Hyundai will hear from me everyday.

This is obviosly a factory defect and needs to be corrected, I sure wish I had done my homework before buying this car, partly because of the dealership service department.
