My 2014 Santa Fe Sport recently started making a really awful sound when trying to start it. It only happens maybe every 4-5 starts, can't really pinpoint when it will happen (like sitting for a long period of time) - it's very random. I make sure to have the brake firmly pushed in and will push the start button firmly as well and it will try to crank but will make almost like a grinding noise - stall - then reluctantly start. No issues driving it after this occurs however I am constantly worried if the next time I am out and about with my children in tow, late at night or what have you - will this be the time that it doesn't start at all. Or worse, if this noise is a sign of something really bad going on and I'm driving down the road and it just dies...
I took video and showed the dealerships maintenance person, so he was able to hear it, however since they were not able to recreate the sound, I was told to just keep driving it until it becomes persistent. Does that really sound like a reasonable request? Go ahead and keep driving it until it just doesn't start anymore...The scan came back fine and I asked to have both the alternator and starter checked. Those came back fine as well. I was told by a friend who is a mechanic to have the Brake Switch Sensor and the Starter button unit checked as well but I am a little leery to have anything else checked as I am sure they will also come back as testing "fine" when there is obviously something wrong.
