The contact owns a 2000 Hyundai Sonata. The contact was driving approximately 25 mph when the "check engine" warning light indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and immediately, the engine stalled. The vehicle restarted and resumed normal operation. The warning indicator remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The failure was contributed to the mass air flow sensor. The vehicle was repaired for the malfunction. Recall number 00V259001, electrical system, wiring was related to the failure; however, the VIN was excluded. Recently, the failure occurred whenever the vehicle was in operation without warning. The vehicle has not been repaired at this time. The failure mileage was 90,000. The current mileage was 97,000.

Whenever the vehicle lost power she pulled the vehicle to the side of the road to restart it. After restarting the vehicle it would accelerate at a low speed. The failure mileage was 102,000. The dealer performed a tune up, and informed her that the spark plug wires were burned. There is a recall for the electrical system wiring recall # 00V259001. As of 4-18-07 the failure occurred 25 times.

She was able to coast to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to dealer, who stated that it was the mass air flow sensor that caused the engine to fail. The dealer stated that there was recall 00V259001 for the mass air flow, but that this vehicle was not covered under the recall due to the VIN. The contact could not recall the name of the dealer where she purchased the vehicle.

The dealership told the contact that something was not correct with the wiring harness where it connects to the seat, causing the light to come on.
