SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME.

FORTUNATELY, I WAS ON PAVED HIGHWAY NEAR A TURN LANE. INCIDENT HAPPENED THE AFTERNOON BEFORE THANKSGIVING OVER 100 MILES FROM HOME AND MY TOOLS. WITH THE HELP OF PASSERSBY, I WAS ABLE TO FIND A NORMAL NUT AND PLACE IT ON FINGER TIGHT, ENOUGH TO GET A MILE TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE. WITH THEIR HELP, I PLACED A DOUBLE NUT ON THE STUD AND FINISHED THE TRIP. MY REAL CONCERN IS THAT I WAS EXPECTING TO SEE A CASTLE NUT WITH A COTTER PIN SECURING THE NUT. THAT WAS NOT THE CASE, THE NORMAL FASTER IS A NYLON LOCKING NUT. NORMAL REPLACEMENT PARTS COME WITH A NYLON LOCKING NUT. THAT IS NOT SECURE ENOUGH WITH A VEHICLE WHEN IT GETS SOME MILES ON IT. THERE WAS OR IS NO PROVISION TO USE A COTTER PIN FOR ADDED SECURITY.

I HAVE PUT SOME WHITE PAINT ON THE NUTS AND STUD SO THAT I CAN EASILY CHECK THE SECURITY STATUS QUICKLY WITHOUT REMOVING THE TIRE.
