3 years ago, I had an engine replaced in my car for an oil change. And it seems like every time I get an oil change done on my vehicle, there is an engine failure...

We've had my mother in laws 2008 Hyundai Sonata since 2010. I've changed the oil changed every 3500-4000 miles, and the car was absolutely reliable, and virtually trouble free. In mid November, 2016, I changed the oil for the winter, using 5w20 as spec'd.

In January, daughter was driving the car, sent me a text stating that the car sounded unusual. I told her to stop driving, and take the car home, which she did, (very local). Upon my arrival home, I started the car, and heard a distinct knocking. Upon further investigation, dipstick showed no oil, no low oil pressure light present.

Can only be described as a rod knock. No evidence of oil leaking/burning. Seemingly vanished. I've never seen anything similar to this in over 40 years of working on/repairing/maintaining vehicles.

Looking through other posts, I've seen similar descriptions of this.

Is there any recourse/ action to be taken? Having no warning via a low pressure warning light makes this extremely frustrating, as I've always stressed the importance of monitoring dash lights/indicators.

I'm open to any corroboration, or descriptions of similar occurrences. Most frustrating, as there is nothing wrong with the car otherwise.

There is a recall on the 2009-2014 Hyundai Sonatas. However, Hyndai refuses to address the same issues as they relate to the 2008 Sonatas. I've sat around and listened as Hyundai sales people and mechanics told several customers, including myself, that we have engine problems, and that we need to have the repairs done at our own expense. One lady had a 2015 and was told the same thing. How can this be?

My question is: what is really going on with Hyundai's engines and how do Hyundai customers get our cars repaired without shelling out more money for Hyundai's defective products?

We were told by one repair shop drive it till it quits, it won't cost anymore to fix now than it will when it quits. Another shop, a dealer said it was the timing chain tensioner and the oil pump. Two fix options. 3600 for timing chain and tensioner or 6200 for new rebuilt motor. Took it to another repair person that changed the timing chain tensioner. That was not the problem. They ended up completely taking the motor apart and found the rod bearing to be scratched up. Bottom line, new motor. Looks like we are going to be into this repair for at least 5200 if not more. I bought this car brand new. I should not have the engine have to be replaced with 111000 miles.
