Sonata GLS 175-Hp, 2.4L-Liter I-4

In August 2020, the door handle and locks on my car broke. I also could not roll down the windows. I was stuck inside the car in the hot sun in the desert and could not get out. I am not young and agile, so I could not climb over seats to get to another door. I had to call emergency responders to get me out. It was embarrassing because the door handle still worked from the outside and all they had to do was open the door.

I initially had the problem fixed by a local mechanic and it was not cheap. The fix only lasted about 2 months.

I then had to take the car to the dealership to get it fixed and it was even pricier.

I have never had a door handle break like that before on any car. What a cheap piece of garbage of the interior is.

Just bought a used 2010 Hyundai Sonata. 3 weeks later the back seat door handle will not open the car from the inside. The passenger door handle just broke off today. I am not happy with myself for trusting a Hyundai. I knew they were a pile of junk but listened to the reviews on this car. Never again.

This is the 4th time I have replaced door handles on my 2010 Hyundai Sonata. Luckily, the first 3 were under warranty, break #3 was within 200 miles of the warranty ending. However, this 4th time was not! The 3rd time I went to the dealership (World Car Hyundai) the General Manager alluded that I must be treating my doors roughly. I told him that was crap because I was the only one who uses the car on a regular basis and that no one was mistreating these door handles.

The General Manager then wanted to throw me out of the dealership. When break #4 happened and I heard par to the handle fall into the door. I went to dealership to have the door handle repaired. I told the service department that I wanted the part that had fallen into the door. When car handle was replaced and car returned to me with the keys, they didn't bring the broken part from within the door. The service manager wanted to charge me to go back and get the piece out of the door, after insisting nothing was found in the door, which i told him had to be wrong. He wouldn't do it until I went and talked to the general manager who had to then go and tell the service manager to get the part our of the door. The service manager finally sent the car back, 45 minutes later with the part found in the door. Why did I want that part. Because I plan to send it back to Hyundai Corporate offices with a complaint letter that they have faulty door handles and need to do something about it. I know it's not a safety issue, but as buyers of their product we deserve better!

The first door handle to break off was a couple of years ago when the left rear handle broke. I took to the dealer and had it fixed out of pocket. Next the driver's door handle broke. I ordered the replacement from amazon for under $12 and a friend put it back on. Did not take long and no door had to be removed. Now the right rear door is handleless and needs fixed. I bought the part and just waiting for my friend to have time to fix. Well, yesterday the left rear handel is getting ready to break...Going to ask the dealer to make it right. What a headache!!

I love my car but this is really starting to annoy me. This is the second time a handle has fallen off. First time was a year ago and warranty covered it. When I asked what caused it they said it was common problem and thought the weather in Texas causes it - ????????. Anyways I thought that was an isolated incident until it happened again this weekend. This time it wasn't covered under warranty. Hopefully I will make it another year before the 3rd one falls off. Certainly not a good time of year for falling off with the holidays around the corner. Fortunately I was able to knock off a few bucks with a coupon for service however with tax it was still $217.

I am very disappointed and had no idea when buying this car that such a thing could happen to a car under 100,000 miles and less than 5 years old. The car is only driven by one person so the wear and tear on the handles is minimal except for driver's side which was the handle replaced a year ago.

My daughter's 2010 Sonata has had the door handles come off of two different doors. She has 3 small kids. She can't get her kids secured in the car. The Hyundai dealer ( Bob Dunn Hyundai in Greensboro, NC) says that it is out of warranty. It will cost her around $250. She works part-time and cannot afford this expense.
